I was wondering if anyone has a better idea than the standard Triple-k type leather belt holders or the folding wallet types. I was looking for something to pair up with my 700 LTR. While I do not anticipate going into combat any time soon, I would like to carry some extra ammo when I am out in the desert shooting. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Well, there's always the butt cuff which usually hold 9 rounds. A lot of people complain that they slip around on them. To prevent this, cut a small hole in the bottom of the cuff and run your sling swivel mount through the hole. It doesn't require a big hole, usually I can get away with just sticking a knife blade through it. Blackhawk markets something similiar that holds five rounds, has a pocket for other assorted items, a moisture-absorbin g cheek pad and velcro'd straps which run underneath the stock to help alleviate slipping. I have one of these on my 700PSS, but I find it gets in the way of getting a good cheek weld. YMMV however.

There are also several slings available which hold 4-6 rounds. The rounds on these can accidently get bumped into things fairly easily, so you may not want to put match ammo into it.

Experiment with "stripper clips". That is what was used with military bolt actions. A Mosin Nagant stripper clip when bent, will accomodate any type of ammo and hold it securely. I currently use them [Mosin clips] to hold 35 Remmington, 38-40, 45ACP and 45LC. They will hold approx. 5 rounds and can be placed in any pocket.

My bolt gun, a Mosin M38, is the only rifle I own, so I have two Mosin belt pouches, carrying 60 rounds. They will fit on any belt, are sturdy and idiot proof, but do take a little work to open and close. Best of all, when you order a Mosin, one usually comes free....

The stock of my 30-06 rem 700 adl is hollow with some foam filling. Unscrewed it and managed to cram 20rnds, a pocket knife, small bag to carry the stuff if I ever take it out, and a lighter in there. Padded with wax paper to prevent any movement. I have one of the 9 rnd but cuffs and made a small hole to fit around the swivel stud. I fit a small screw driver under the cuff to help remove the butt pad in case I need the ammo. The extra weight really makes the weapon balance better. Did a similar thing for my marlin 60 but had to drill holes in the stock under the buttplate to accept 14 22 rnds and wax paper. In that case I actually cut the butt plate in half on an angle and can now pry open the buttplate to get to the ammo easily (no need for screwdriver). Emergency ammo on the gun is a must for me if possible.

Stripper clips in pouches (for <40 rounds) or a bandolier if I'm packing for a day of plinking..

Zip lock sandwich bags. About 20 rounds in a bag, with a piece of paper describing the bullet, powder, primer, and length Put as many bags in a pack as you feel like carrying, along with a Sub sandwich and a thermos of coffee and some bottles of water.
That's about as tactical as I get with the Rem 700.

Regards.

I use a 9-round butt cuff and also carry a spare detachable magazine loaded with four rounds. If you really need to carry a lot of ammo, look at shotgun shell holders and the like - I bet you could stuff a lot of rifle ammo in those things. :)

I have a Lee-Enfield, so stripper clips. In your case.....

www.lightfighter.com go under "rifles" and check out their stock pack for bolt actions. Holds five rounds ready to go and room for a box of ammo I think. Made for Remington 700 sniper rifles.

There are belt bandoliers made for cowboy shooters that'll hold ammo.

www.armoralleather.com, if you email him and tell him you want a clip-on shell-loop ammo carrier in .308, basically a belt slide except for rifle ammo, he doesn't normally make them but he is a shooter, he could fix you up. He does custom leather work.

If the rifle has a clip guide, loaded clips are OK, but what is wrong with just sticking a box of ammo in your pocket? The box keeps the ammo from getting dinged up. It is slower to use, but I am not usually expecting to encounter ten thousand fanatic Arab terrorists riding camels and waving scimitars.

I keep a spare 10 rds in an inexpensive Uncle Mike's nylon pouch in a Winchester/Federal plastic 'belt pack' right from the factory.. they don't rattle around, also have a spare 4 shot magazine.

Depends how much spare ammo you need...

Up to 7 rounds, I just put it in the magazine of the rifle. :D The LTR is a short-action 700, right? This ArmsTech mag will hold 7 rounds of .308, or 9 rounds of .223:

Gewehr98, I just found your other post,

and have one on the way. Solves my problem. I think I will also add a Eagle Inds .308 ammo carrier.

Thanks Guys,

Matt

Federal ammunition comes in boxes that have two red plastic shellholders that neatly slip onto a belt. I've been using these for years for hunting.

Two folding Cordura/Velcro wallet types, made to hold 8 rnd each (two rows of 4)for 20 rounds alltogether (4 rounds in rifle, and two packages ~ walletsized with 8 each) I sewed the wallets up to perfectly hold my own caliber ammo, no clanking, fits in a front pocket, protects the spair ammo for the bolt rifle. If Im just out blasting usually I have a mag fed weapon, with a couple extra mags.

HI
I just collected about 6 of the red Federal belt clips and put them on a webbing belt with a fastex buckle.

I use Tikka's and their single stack mags fit well into British milsurp pistol ammo pouches. the one that officers wore when they carried the webly revolver.
Bumbags work well also.
I made a sand bag to fit the front pouch of a bumbag I had so I can carry the bag, 60 rounds ammo and a water bottle with me on a varmint session.

This is what i do. My dad had one and didnt want it. I claimed it and quickly found out it pretty much sucked (migrated towards the trigger guard). A quick cut for the rear sling swivel fixed it, at least mostly. It still moves a bit towards the trigger guard, but its TONS better then before without the hole.

9 rounds right on the stock, and adds weight. Sounds good to me.

A small nylon "lunch box". complete with soda, smokes and 50 rnds of ammo.it came with a small sandwich shaped, zippered box that fastened via vewlcron on top..sewed some straps on it and glued foam inside it..great for just taking 20-40 rnds to a varmit hunt, wraps around the buttstock and sits on the right side.

There is this one ancient invention that you guys have missed.
Pockets.
I generally just stick about ten extra rounds in my left jeans pocket. When placed in with the bullet down and laying flat against your leg, they stack up pretty well. It works well for hunting, giving me a loaded rifle and ten extra rounds.
One other thing I have looked at is the repro Enfield bandoliers floating around out there. They seem to have potential.
