How do you store your AR15?

When putting away your AR15,

1. Charging with safe "on"

2. Hammer down with trigger backed / safe "off"

Chamber loaded, safety on. I usually store it barrel down so it's easier to grab.

Mag loaded and in the magwell, safety on, bolt closed with dust cover closed and locked in the safe. That's how we carry em at work (except for the locked in a safe part) until a threat is iminent.

@CA2005 I do the same and live with two others. They understand how it is stored and how to use it if need be. Gun education is the best safety.

I store mine with a loaded mag. No round chambered. Safety off. It's just me and my GF in the apartment so there's no chance of kiddos playing with it.

Yep... Chamber loaded and safety on.

There is no such thing as a safe or unloaded firearm until you physically unload it yourself. PERIOD!

Even if I show you it's unloaded and hand it to you, you unload it again for yourself.
That's at least how I was raised.

And yes, anyone that lives here or hangs out here knows the drill when it comes to weapons.

Mine are hammer down, empty chamber, trigger locked, no magazine, socked, and stored in a safe.

I have a very inquisitive 6 year old. :scrutiny:

Yikes....hope you live alone.
What's your objection? Keeping it loaded and on safe? Or storing it barrel down?

I live with one person, my wife, who is fully trained in the rifle's operation. In case of visitors, it gets locked up.

My wife schools me on the four rules more than I school her. She puts me to shame, and I'm borderline OCD about gun safety (which I consider a good thing).

I keep mine about 6 feet from my bed, its leaning up against a corner. Loaded mag, safety on, no round in the chamber, dust cover closed(why leave it open???). If I have a problem i'm probably gonna be reaching for my CCW pistol(XD45) because it has a light. I guess if I need the rifle I'll walk over and I'll have to take the time to rack it.

I really want one of these wall mounts...

Verify chamber empty, dry fire in a safe direction, safety off, verify BUIS up and Ghost ring flipped up, check weapon light on handguard, loaded mag in magwell, extra mag in the buttstock pouch. Store rifle.

To make weapon ready, throw sling over shoulder, charge a round in the chamber, safety on, red dot on, ready to go.

All the long guns are stored 'cruiser ready': mag loaded, hammer down on empty chamber. The short rifle has its Aimpoint on and set to a good night time brightness level. The battery will last 5+ years and if I need a rifle I don't want to be screwing around with the sight.

Pistols are stored loaded.

Full magazine. Empty chamber.
A couple ijn the safe and a couple around the house.
Streamlight TLR-2 on all HD guns.

I have no objection to a loaded chamber. I keep the chambers of the HD semi autos empty for standardization.
I have a laser/light equipped Ruger 22/45 that I use as a flashlight when outside at night. Since the gun is handled a lot while doing chores I feel better not having a round in the chamber. So instead of having some HD guns with chambered rounds and some not, I know all the guns have empty chambers.

This is almost exactly how I keep mine too! In the corner next to my dresser. I keep a 30rnd Mag loaded in the well, unchambered, trigger hammer down with safety on. AND i do keep my green dot on a lower night setting.

I have a flashlight mounted to it sometimes... I take it on and off. Right now i do not have the light mounted, but its a great advantage to have it installed IF there ever was a problem. Its a 150 lumen BRIGHT BLINDING light that could be used to impair their eyesight.

But... i also keep a 12+1 chambered XD40 tucked under my bed mattress. I would probably reach for that first because its right under my head.

I keep mine unloaded with several loaded magazines at hand. I should be able to access the weapon, seat a magazine, and charge it in less than 5 seconds. I keep a loaded safed 870 as well as several loaded handguns closer at hand.

+1. seriously an AR15 for HD? i live in texas not Zombieland! i think 2 handguns and 1 mossy 500 cruiser is more than enough. but it's nice to know that an AR15 is there when Zombies attack!

The AR-15 and the shotgun are pretty much interchangeable for HD purposes, and civilian .223 JHP typically penetrates less than 00 buckshot. Not everyone owns a shotgun, and it's easier in a lot of areas to get practical range time on a carbine.

As to the OP's question, I usually prefer chamber empty, mag in, safety on if the carbine isn't the primary HD firearm, and chamber loaded, safety on if it is the primary AND you can secure it from unauthorized handling (pretty much the same way I'd run a shotgun if I owned one).
