How expensive did things get in the January 2013 Panic?

It will happen again.

A $600 DPMS Sportical would go as high as $1300. 30 Round P-mags that wholesale for $9 went as high as $50@. 1000 round case of 223/5.56 for as high as $700. $500 Mini-14 would bring $800.

I happened to save some Cabalas sale add clippings for a few years for some odd reason.

Bushmaster ORC
6-9-09 = $949.99.
12-3-09 = $1,079.99.
4-15-10 = $699.99.
8-23-12 = $629.99.
11-29-12 = $599.99

That's all I got before it got crazy and they stopped having then in the sale flyers.

BTW: Walmart was selling Colt 6920 M4's for $1,097 on 9-13-12 and had them in stock in my store.

Saw a Romanian PSL with 1 magazine and correct scope sell for $1600.

Saw 5.56 ammo at $1/rd, and 30 round mags up to nearly $100 each. Sold out everywhere.

Glock pistol mags doubled in price to $50-100 for various sizes, and were sold out everywhere. In fact, mags were the hottest items and seems that all mags were double and triple their price overnight.

Private sales had AKs and ARs at double and triple their current prices, up to $1000-$1500 for these platforms. In fact, all military based long guns were the same.

I could be wrong, but I think the panic of 2013 is still going strong as far as 22 ammo goes.

I have a friend that sold some USGI mags to a dealer at a gun show for $23 each. Dealer sold them for $30 each in about five minutes.

I let go 3 AR's two for $1400, one for $1300. They were plain ones, two had Stag receivers and Armalite uppers, I don't recall what the third one was. I used the money for new transportation, my old vehicle needed retired.

At the time people were paying well into the $2000+ range for average AR's, I probably could of held out for more but figured a 90% profit was pretty good.

Before the panic I was able to find a box of .45 acp for $21. After the panic IF you were able to find them... $46. Now they are $23 - $25. Also Hi-Point was selling for $149 - $159. After the panic they were selling for $200 to $219.

In January, 2013 I could not find 9x19mm Luger ammo or reloading components anywhere and was running pretty low. I went to a local gun show and ended up paying $21.10 (42.2 cents per round!) for a box of 50 Remington 115 grain MC cartridges.

On the one hand, I regretted it immediately. On the other hand, it was like buying gas at $4 a gallon - do you want to drive (shoot) or not?

With current prices at the lowest levels in several years, I am 'investing' what I can in stocking up in as many calibers (and reloading components) as I shoot in my meager firearm collection. If I am still around for the next 'Panic' I may not have enough to get completely through it, but I will be able to enjoy my hobby a little bit longer.

I saw a lot of AK 47`s, AR 15`s and ammo selling for unbelievable prices at the gun shows. Not expensive for me as I did not buy anything at those prices.

Here in CO we were left with 6 months in the peak of the panic to buy all the mags we'd need for the rest of our lives (or at least the part we plan on spending inside the state).

IMO that is how expensive things got, the entire state of CO is now no-go and that will not expire. The entire state of NY got a couple more rounds clipped off their capacity (with other onerous additions). Everyone in CT had to line up and be registered. CA added a two year 'safety' training to own a handgun. It is not the panic prices but it is the panic "We have to do something" response that is the worst part.

I sold an original folding stock mini 14 for $1700, not sure but looking back that may have been to cheap.

I saw a plain-Jane Norinco SKS go for $700 at a local auction. It was nice, but not THAT nice.

I saw a fde scar sell for 8500 man I would like to see what that guy is thinking now

I sold a used Bushmaster Carbon 15 (cheap, stupid AR that doesn't even have a front sight or a way to mount one) for ~$1,400 on Gunbroker, buy it now, in about 16 (overnight) hours (sold for about $800 new).

For a moment PMAGs were going for $90-$100 and for a long time they were going for $50+.

BCM BCG's were going for $300-$350 easy

Colt 6920's peaked at ~$3k

5.56 ammo was about $1/round for awhile

Some of those prices....wow. Here locally it didn't seem that bad as far as prices..just supply. Stripped lowers were about $110 as opposed to $90 pre-panic. Some ammo got outrageous. Spam cans of 7.62x54R were selling for about $80 at local shows pre-panic and afterwards they were $150, so that was a little ridiculous. 5.56 ammo of course skyrocketed (well over $1 per round around here, and not for premium ammo), but it didn't bother me because I was reloading all mine. I do remember mags got ridiculously expensive though. I bought a bunch before the panic so it didn't bother me, but I remember seeing mags for $50-$60 that were previously $15.

My main problem was finding stuff. I was building an AR right in the middle of the panic and it took me forever to get parts. Most stuff was backordered for weeks. I had a BCG on backorder that took 4 months to come in. Reloading components were the only thing that really hurt me. I couldn't find them anywhere, especially powder and primers. I STILL can't find VARGET powder anywhere around here. Before the panic, it was everywhere.

However, I did get offered ridiculous prices for the first AR I built, which was just a basic AR. Got several offers of around $1600, which is almost triple what it cost me to build. I didn't sell it because....well, I don't sell anything but that one specifically has sentimental value.

I learned my lesson. I'm buying spare parts and stocking up on ammo and reloading supplies so I can weather the next panic and still be able to shoot.

Why don't people stock up on 9mm, .223, 7.62x39, .45ACP, etc. NOW while you can get it?

When the panic buying of 2013 hit I already had all the ammo I needed, I didn't go scrambling to buy more at absurd prices.

I think a fair amount of people are.

But not 'enough'.
