How far would you drive to go to the range?

I haven't gone to the range since I moved to Pittsburgh in August. I miss my "just up the road" State Game Lands range back in Indiana.

Depends on the range. If I could draw from holster and shoot, load more than one round at a time on the rifle range, shoot as fast as I want, shoot pistol at ranges other than 25 yards, use something other than round targets etc I'd drive a good ways. Too bad our local range is like that.

Aran,

Don't know if you've looked at them, but I have a friend who is/was a member at Castlewood near Zielianople. http://www.castlewoodclays.com/

Really awesome facility! I haven't shot there for years but I still remember the wild terrain made for a cool as heck place to shoot.

I guess I'm lucky. I live about 1 1/2 miles as the crow flies from my range. I was going about once a week, but its been too cold lately. First warm day though...
The only thing bad about it is, no semi auto rifles. Also, you can only shoot paper targets, and it has a 100yds max range on the rifle range.
Rifle range has a 50 and a 100yd range and for pistol there's 25 and 50 yds.
They do have pistol shoots, and trap shoot competitions there. There is also a clubhouse, so AFTER shooting you can go in for a few cold ones.
The reason for no semi-autos is that about 10 years ago, some yahoo off-duty non-member cop was practicing shooting from the hip with an AR-15 and shot over the back stops and hit a house across the river (1.5 miles away) and they traced it back to our club. The township shut the range down for over a year while they investigated it. That was a long year.

Sam,

Thanks for the tip on Lower Providence Rod & Gun Club. I just checked out their website, looks interesting. They are about as far as the indoor range I checked out today but they have more to offer. I’ll definitely check them out.

Thanks for the invitation, next time I’m out by you I’ll PM you. Maybe we can do some shooting!

Move to rural Vermont!
Buy out a bleeding-heart tree-hugger and shoot away with whatever you want!
Driving time is one-way from wherever you are now.

No permits, no carry laws, no worries...

Now if I want to shoot at a "real" range, I gotta drive about 15 miles.
It's outdoors and really only good for the sportsman's club shoots.
They don't sell ammo there so that's not an issue...
Geez, it must really suck to have to live where your second amendment rights get stomped all over...

I don't drive to the nearest range. I walk about 50 yards to my 25 yard handgun range and about 100 yards to my neighbor's 200 yard range.

Sure thing!

As I mentioned, they do have a pretty rigorous system of certifications for doing stuff on their grounds. I know you have to take a class to draw from a holster, and another to practice "action" shooting skills like shooting while moving and such. It sounds like a lot, and each does cost some money, but if you check out their address on Google Earth, you'll see that their facility has houses, roads, and US422 hedging them in in every direction. They live in constant risk of a stray round shutting them down. In a way, it's wonderful that they can allow any of those activities at all. The classes give them the chance to evaluate the members and make sure they're familiar enough with the best gun handling practices to keep the liability to sane levels.

The members of the Tuesday Knights and others I've shot with assure me that, if you can stand to work through their approval arrangement, it is a great, vibrant place to shoot. Having shot with many of them (and having been soundly beaten by a few on more than one occasion) I can attest that they do promote the very highest level of marksmanship.

Good luck!

The closest range to me, one with a good bench rest(very steady), 100 yds. with a good berm, furnished chronograph, reloading shop on site, cold drinks furnished, if I happen to be there at lunch, lunch provided, good target holders, targets provided, some swinging steel pistol targets, part time gunsmith(tinker mostly) on site, watch dogs for security, and sometimes, I said sometimes, I can arrange for after hours entertainment! Sorry it is private membership, although there are invitational shoots(bring own entertainment).
About 40 yds. away!

Being bad today!

well sounds like there's a huge mix of distances :p

But for me, there's a pretty decent outdoor public range maybe 10min from my house. though it is out of the way for most people I know, who live closer to downtown Dallas. The only other range I've been to in the area is DFW Gun Range near Love Field, and they're indoor. Pretty decent there, though I only go if I go with friends from SMU. If it's people who live closer to me, Its the garland range.

If you ever get out towards Harrisburg, West Shore Sportsmans Association is my hangout.

Our hangout. :)

I wonder if Jeter has a place closer than WSSA when he just want to shoot somewhere local, Sam. He's out in Pottsville, right?

I'll drive 1 1/2 hours one way to shoot on a 1,000 yard range. It's all relative; I just factor it into my day and make sure my tobacco pouch is full before I leave.

I can drive to an open desert range, one favorite about 15 minutes(~10 miles) from home, and my favorite about 25/30 minutes (~25 miles) from home. There is a public range about 25 miles from house great for bench shooting, pretty good place if wind isn't howling or freezing cold or burning hot for $7 for the day.

A new indoor range just opened about 10 minutes from here, but would run ya about $65+ dollars for an hour of shooting. They do have a decent gun shop and great customer service. But I can't afford to shoot there.

currently 41 miles mostly interstate. Now if someone here can hook me up with a chance to shoot at Mill Creek in DeSoto Ks, I'd have a much shorter drive:)

Depends on the range. There's a nice Sporting Clays range with rifle and pistol berms about 14 miles away. They charge by the hour for the berms, so it makes it nice not to have to be on a waiting list for membership: http://www.riversedgeoutdoors.us/

For handguns and rimfires, I use the berm in the back yard. Pasture clays range is down by the barn.

The NRA Whittington Center www.nrawc.org is a two hour drive. That requires a whole weekend, but is well worth it.

I have a decent range about 10 minutes from me but I usually drive about 45 minutes to another range just because I like it better. I am however a member at both.

I have a 100 yard range about 15 minutes from my back door, and a 200 yard range about 20 minutes from my back door. Both are free. Trouble is that they are outside, and uncovered, so my brass goes everywhere, and I want my brass.

If there is a lot of snow on the ground, I will drive about an hour and 15 minutes to a 200 yard range. It is covered though, and has a concrete floor. Brass is much easier to collect there. It is free also.
