Would you register your gun(s) with the PD to use a local range?

Would you register with a university police department to use the indoor range?

As far as I know, there aren't any shooting ranges local to me. Gotta drive 20 minutes to an hour for the nearest ones. I'm OK with that. A lot of the times the "good" ranges you gotta pay for.

Anyway, I found out that the local college has an indoor shooting range on campus that rents guns. Because it's on a college campus, if anyone wants to bring in their own pistols to shoot at the range, they have to get permission from the campus police department, which entails providing the make, model, and serial number of any gun(s) you wanna bring on campus. Not to mention your social security number, driver's license, and all the questions (are you a felon? are you a fugitive?) you'd find on Form 4473. This range permit lasts for one school year and must be renewed every school year.

There's no registration of any kind (that I know of) in Missouri. This is a special case because it's a college campus. The permit is to carry one's unloaded pistol directly to and from the range (which is understandable).

Everything about this seems understandable, but I'm fairly against gun registration in any way, shape, or form because I think it's nobody's business. Would you be comfortable registering your guns for the convenience of a shooting range that is a 5 minute drive away, or would you rather keep your privacy and drive 30-60 minutes for a range that's an actual business?

I'm in Florida. It would be illegal for them to make a registration list!

When I was at college, if we wanted to have guns on campus, we had to check them with the campus PD and they would store them in a locker for us.

I never did because I had no desire for the campus PD, which in addition to the few officers, included a bunch of college students on a power trip with their parking ticket powers. :cuss:

And how would they find out if I had a gun in my campus apartment anyway? They do the rare inspection, but those are easy enough to avoid. Not that I ever brought a gun on campus property or anything... ;)

my school will terminate enrollment for any student with guns on campus, even off duty police officers, yes you heard that, they cant be arrested but they can be kicked out. BS. Our campus security isnt even allowed pepper spray. Knives arent allowed unless your a culinary arts student.

Are you in England? Wow.

Although I'm extremely against any type of registration for firearms, I'd have to opt with yes simply because you'll actually be able to practise your firearm more often than not. I doubt that in the 3 or 4 years you will attend said college, there will be a massive door knocking campaign to confiscate firearms. If there were, the Government wouldn't just go off of registration lists. They'd go with purchase lists and NICS checks. Everytime any one of us purchases a firearm, we give all of our info including serial # to our firearms. If the time did come to start knocking on doors for guns, those Transfer forms are going to be used as well. I seriously doubt that the government wouldn't be able to track down all of my firearms that I have purchased (papered guns). A registration for those guns to that small PD is, although undesireable, I think the gains on this occasion outweigh the risk. Just MHO.

im in maine, a state full of hunters. the state university has campus police, who actually attend police academy and carry guns. communtiy college, they think they ban everyone from wepons nobody will get hurt. oh well i guess i can take on a gunman with a pen. or the oc spray i carry. Even though campus secrity cant carry it, my student rulebook says "no firearms, knives, explosives" guess they missed oc:D

30 min isnt that far to go for a shooting range. When I lived in California I had to travel 90-120 min just to get to one. But I did it because enjoy shooting.

Yeah lately I've been driving 90 minutes to a good range. I even drove 200 miles a couple days ago to buy my latest pistol, and 200 miles back.

So I still practice pretty often, and I don't think the convenience is worth it. They're asking for my social, serial numbers, birth place, and tons more questions. It's almost like they do a background check because there's a waiting period to get the permit.

Man, and to think I already had a background check for my CCW and each time I fill out Form 4473! This isn't worth it, IMHO.

To further convince others that this range is "below average," some of their rules that stink:

1) Can only load magazines with 5 rounds each time.
2) Can only use FMJ/soft lead ammo.
3) Can't use silhouette targets "because those are for the police academy."
4) Can't use any Magnum rounds.

okay, doesnt fmj do more damage to ranges by penetrating, and i believe 38 special is much more powerful than 22 mag, but 22 mag is a magnum right? as for targets, you can only buy silhouettes online round here, no stores sell them for some reason

Would you register your Bible with the local PD in order to attend a local church?

Firearms, just like Bibles and newspapers are Constitutionaly protected items.

Personally, HELL NO. I would find a different school, or better yet, just quit and get a job. I've never seen the real value in college to begin with. Of all the people unemployed and unemployable, the majority are college grads. I make twice what a school teacher makes, am probably better educated, and even make a little more than my mother(a doctor by the way). I run my own small business(I own and operate a commercial vehicle), and what I earn is entirely up to me. The harder I work, the more I make. Oh, did I mention I am a high school drop out? Yup, teachers said I would never amount to anything. Oh what a great country this used to be. Could be again as long as we keep a free market.

+1 on ThrottleJockey's HELL NO !!

I abhor "registration of guns" for any reason. Most guns are already "registered" at the place that you bought them, they don't need to be registered again. Your car is registered when you buy it......... you don't have to re-register it with the damned school police when you drive on campus, do you?

Rubber Duck, by no means is it useless. I just have no use for it, and going doesn't guarantee anything. Anyone can educate themselves and use that knowledge to their advantage even without a little piece of paper proving they can do what they're told. Not to mention the huge debt most people acquire going. I'm just saying that I didn't go, and I have job security, I like what I do, income well into the 6 figures, and no debt load(also didn't spend 4,6 or 8yrs learning LibArts before I started earning). My grandparents are the same way, high school at best, happy, VERY wealthy, successful in almost every way. You must have the attitude to be successful, and with the right attitude, no college is needed. I feel that it is a myth that you "MUST" go to college, and if you think about it, the manner in which most choose a field of study can be compared to being led around by the nose(when a guidance counselor gives particular information directing people towards a social agenda filling quotas in higher education schools to ensure certain fields are occupied without concern for actual interests).

Where do you go to school? In Moscow? Good grief.........:banghead:

I would drive the few minutes to another range.

Wow that came from nowhere, a diploma can never be taken away, regardless of whether you use it or not. I agree a diploma is no replacement for real world experience, but it looks good on a Resume. No one wants a fresh grad. My advice is get a reputable job(not at Mcdonalds) while in college, then when you get out you will have an advantage in finding a job. 90% of employers will take a perso with 4 years real world work experience(nad no college) over a 4 year college grad.

Did my B.S. get me a job? No, like always it is who you know. Would I do college all over again, knowing what I know now? Yes
