How good are the ranges where you live?

Unless I am sighting a gun in I don't like shooting paper. I have 4 metal spinners in the backyard. One of the spinners is made of 3/4 plate. I can shoot it with anything. The rest are for pistols or small caliber rifles.

I enjoy shooting skeet and sporting clay as well. We have two nice facilities in the area. One skeet facility is in town. It's crowded with lots of rules and people who look down their nose at you. The other is a longer drive but it's well worth it. The atmosphere is peaceful, just general safety rules. The owner is the 65 and up national sporting clay champion. He is determined to keep it laid back. People that want more rules or complain without cause are sent packing.

I spend half the year in eastern Kansas. The ones up here are terri-bad (terribly bad). The only indoor pistol range nearby has poor lighting, a horrible safety record, and substandard ventilation. The outdoor rifle and pistol ranges are adequate but quite far away.

they suck..... theres only 2:

the base club which is kinda pain in the rear

and a private one that i dont feel really safe at
Paintball Dude- you must be in Jacksonville. The shooting around there kinda sucked. Thank god I lived out in Beaulaville, so I had land to shoot on.

Colorado Kevin-- Thanks for the heads up on your club. The wait list there seems way shorter than the 3-4 year wait to get into Clear Creek County. There is another decent club/range in the southern part of town. Just south of Chatfield in Waterton Canyon is the Skyline Hunting and Fishing Club. I don't know the club itself, but they allow the department I work for to do rifle & shotgun quals there for free. The range has a pistol area, a 100 yd rifle, and 300 yard rifle area. There is also a big set-up for archery, too. I understand that the range is controlled by Lockheed Martin, so that's probably why police departments can use it for free. Might be worth checking out.

I have 2 outdoor public ranges here that I use, both within a 15 minute drive. We're in the country here and everyone here has guns so we're not affected by that city nonsense yet. I'm about 350 miles north of New York City and actually, that's not far enough :)

The range outside sanford,Fl is very well organized. They stress........safety! Plus, there are plenty of R/0`s to handle any problems.
Can`t beat that.

I belong to an indoor range, the Bullet Trap (Plano, TX) that is just a couple miles from the house. It has plenty of lanes (18) at 25 yds. It has good ventilation, but the summers are hot and the range gets uncomfortable.

NJ

Very lucky in that I get to go to a few different ranges for work, training and qualifying. Army post at West Point, NY has a terrific 300m range with pop up targets that Army uses for it's rifle qual course. Sorry don't have pics available but it is a great place to shoot.

Most often will hit the public range in Ft. Dix, NJ (pictured).

NJ range has pistol and 200 yard rifle range. Recently redone with a concrete pad and single roof that runs nearly the width of the range. I believe it's 20 lanes. $30/year for LEO and $4/hour to shoot at each visit so price is fantastic!

We usually put targets out from 15-25 for pistol and the boys and I enjoy the extra visual drama of exploding water bottles at every distance.

Yes that is a container of bbs for the airsoft gun, but the airsoft stayed in the trunk once the 16" 5.56 BCM and Glock 22 (.40 cal) came out. Can't blame the kids though, much more satisfying to watch a 2 liter coke bottle explode out at 175 yards than popping some holes in paper.

Range rules allow for shooting from just about any position as long as your body stays behind the red line. No rapid fire, usually leave a second or two between rounds and all is well. State rules apply for weapons.

Also go to indoor pistol range in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn that's much closer to home. 25 yard range is good for pistol practice but pretty limited in what you can do. Standing and shooting is pretty much it. $18 for an hour (bit different being in NYC compared to central Jersey).

Here in PA there are MANY ranges, and they tend to have their own specialties (practical handgunning, smallbore rifle competition, trap/skeet/clays, highpower, etc.). Fortunately, membership tends to be very inexpensive (my club's individual membership is $55/year) so you can belong to several to cover all your bases.

Or, if you specialize in one or two areas, most of the clubs hold monthly competitions which are open to non-members affiliated with that shooting discipline. I could hit any of probably 20 different ranges within a half-day's drive of my house JUST to shoot IDPA matches.

Cluster, that's some beautiful country, sir.

Thanks. I have bigger plans, just no time. I still have to clear some trees for the rifle range, and the trails to it need massive work =/

I like that range in your pics. Its shaped out as a middle finger =p.

As of last year they began having a waitlist to join, since the club owners wanted to cap membership before the place got too crowded. The last I checked though, the waitlist was only a few months long. You might want to check out their website, and get in touch with Cy Soto or Juan to see about membership information:

You may want to check again, haha. The waiting list is now almost 300 people and 18 months long. Less than a year to go for me!:banghead:

Well, it depends. In Alabama, it seems that the majority of training centers are just downright terrible. I mean like in buildings that are barely standing. Some of the FOP ranges that are outside are nice and we have some nice indoor ranges but all, and I repeat, all of the nice ranges are generally privately owned. So, if you cannot afford to pay for a membership, are not part of the police, etc. then you are stuck with some pretty rough shooting places. On the other hand, we do have some private ranges that are not IMO, that nice either so we have them all. In the end, I am just glad we have places to shoot.

Wow. I'm truly fortunate, it seems. I belong to a private club. Membership is capped at 300 bodies. We have trap, archery, rifle and pistol shooting. All outdoors. We can shoot up to 500 yds in organized shoots (for safety reasons). When there isn't an organized shoot, the range is closed except to members and we can shoot up to 100 yds. It takes a keycard to get through the gate, so you're ensured that only members and guests are inside. No rangemasters; the shooters take care of safety just fine. If somebody wants a ceasfire, they just ask and folks safe their guns and head downrange. It's just like shooting with your buds somewhere in the sticks. Only we have a covered firing line and a woodstove. Almost like home! The members are like brothers and sisters.

Wow, that list got long quickly! Sorry to hear that it is taking so long to get in these days. On the other hand, I think you'll appreciate having a membership cap once you are in. I think the place would be quite crowded if they were still accepting open memberships like they used to. At least by having a cap in place you can fairly well guarantee that you'll be able to shoot without waiting when you get there each day.

Hang in there, and hopefully I'll be seeing you out there at WHAC real soon!

NoVA? Well, there's the NRA range. They rent all crazy kinds of ammo, but they don't rent guns. They're expensive. Blue Ridge Arsenal is within easy biking (or European walking) distance. They're expensive. Unless you make friends with land, the ranges aren't all that good here.

This is the range I belong to. 20 minutes from my front door.

Manatee Gun & Archery Club is a private Club open to the public. The Club offers the only 1,000 yard range, in Florida, open to the public.

The ranges include: 12 yard pistol; 75 yard rifle/pistol; 100, 200, 300, 500, 565, & 1,000 yard ranges; 5 stand shotgun; three bays of cowboy, 200 yard bench rest rifle and AREA 51 (police training, run and gun, three gun, machine gun).

Spent last Thursday ringing the gong at 565yds! ;)

There's only one official range close to me, about 9-10 miles away, and it's run by the local gun club. It's only open to the public three days a week. If your a gun club member you get a key to the gate. It probably doesn't get a whole lot of use. Very few people live close to it, for the rest there are better spots just outside of town in the woods.

I belong to the Mill Creek Rifle Range located a few miles out of KC. It is a very nice outdoor range. I've gone there for years...good range, good people. We have 50,100, 200, 300, and 500 yd rifle ranges and shorter pistol ranges. The facilities are well maintained by great volunteers. Thinking about now makes we wonder why I am here and not there...see ya!!

I live inside the 'burb's of Jefferson County, AL; so my ranges are kind'a
restricted to the F.O.P. range in Pleasant Grove, Jefferson County Sheriffs
range near Coalburg, and the Bessemer Police Range locally. Now, if you
want to step-up to an indoor range, then Hoover Tactical is the place for
you. 'Bout $23.00 @ day (me thinks~?), and all brass that hits the floor
belongs to them~! :uhoh: :cuss:

I’m quite lucky despite living in the UK. I have an indoor 25 yard range for .22s only and an outdoor range up to 50 yards for everything else including black powder shooting, both within a 15 minute drive. I also have a 200 yard range within 30 mins from home plus I can get to Bisley within 90 mins for everything again upto 1000 yards.

So I’m well catered for in terms of shooting ranges … gun laws well that’s another matter.
