What are the class requirements, like are we talking about every weekend for a month or a lot longer? Also, is there a lengthy background check or is that fast? I don't want to wait til the end of summer before I can legally travel with a handgun in my car!

The class can be done in a single long day (10 hours minimum for the class I think), many instructors split the class and take two days. The background check can take time, for more specific info checkout http://texaschlforum.com we're a friendly bunch over there. And in Texas we call ours a CHL not a CCP.

It is already legal to travel with a handgun in your car as long as it is concealed. The class has to have a minimum 10 hrs. then a shooting proficiency test. The class I took was 4 hrs. a day for three days and on the fourth we shot. The DPS has 60 working day to issue the license from when they start on your application.

Do you take your own handgun?

I thought it was only legal w/o CHL if you were "traveling" defined as an extended road trip scenario, not stepping out to get the groceries.

As for taking your own gun to class, the answer is usually yes. Some instructors may provide a gun if you don't have one. You can legally transport your gun in car to most places in Texas as long as the gun is concealed and does not leave the car (with some exceptions).

HB 1815 excludes from unlawful carrying of a weapon a person who is carrying a handgun, illegal knife, or club on the person’s own premises or premises under their control or inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or is under their control. The bill makes it an offense to carry a handgun in a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person’s control if the handgun is in plain view or the person is engaged in certain criminal activity, is prohibited from possessing a firearm, or is a member of a criminal street gang.

You take your own gun, but for the testing, it must be .32 caliber or larger. You can't test with a .22. It takes 50 rounds of ammo, but many people will make you shoot their ammo. 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 rounds at 7 yards, and 10 rounds at 15 yards. It is very difficult to fail.

There is a written test, but most instructors will read through the questions during the class (not quite verbatim) in addition to other stuff. It isn't very hard.

I was think my original license took just over 60 days. These days you can go to www.texasonline.com and start the process on line. It at least lets you pay the fee, fill out initial paper work and they send you the package to fill out. The instructor will normally help you do the fingerprints and other crap.
