I am thinking of getting my CCW license. However, I really doubt I would actually carry a gun, mostly because I have a standard issue pistol that would be too bulky and I don't feel like buying another gun to carry. Perhaps I’d keep it locked in the glove compartment of my car. Mostly, I’d like to get the CCW to support the 2nd amendment and in case I really feel it becomes necessary to start carrying, i.e. a disruption in society that led to higher crime rate, etc…

My question is how many fellow HighRoaders are in the same boat I am? You have a CCW but choose not to carry or carry only sometimes?

I carry in the car almost all the time, but not always on my person. Depends on where I am going. Also I travel to WI quite often and they don't permit CCW.

Off THR, there are probably not that many. A lot get them the same reason you cited, because you can. In some state having a CCW makes a gun purchase quicker so that may factor into it.

I carry everywhere that it is legal and have since the day my CPL was issued. It's more important than my American Express card and I definitely don't leave home without that! I do suspect that a large pct of CCW holders do not carry all of the time. But then, who knows? No one knows that I'm carrying - not even my wife.

This has come up before and in the past most respondants do, in fact, carry everywhere they are legally able.

I am armed or W/in arm's length 24/7

The police dept. just called me yesterday to let me know mine is available to pick up, so I'll be getting it this afternoon. I don't own a carry gun yet, and it may be a couple of months before I do, but I figured it would be better to have the permit and not need it than to not have it and end up needing it. I won't carry very often for a while, because I have a full time job and I'm a full time student, and I'm at either place the majority of the time, and neither permit carrying of firearms. I'll sure be glad I have it though :)

I got my Georgia Firearms License the begining of September. I do not carry, yet. Funds are tight and probably will get tighter in the next 4-5 months.

But when funds are better I'll pocket carry an LCP or Kel-tec 380 due to attire. I am of the belief that one should carry every waking hour since you can't choose when you will have to defend yourself.

Well my wife has her permit but doesn't carry. Anymore. She used to, but she suffered an injury to her brain a year ago, and we agree that her judgement, especially under stress may not be up to snuff just yet. It's getting better but still has a long way to go. Our agreed upon standard is when she and I agree that she can get in an automobile, and go off on her own, she can carry a gun again. She agrees that she may never be able to do that again.

She still likes to go to the range from time to time though. You should have seen the look on her face the first time. Pure joy. "I can still do this."

I don't know where you live, but it sounds like you consider it "safe". That's a dangerous way of thinking.

A few months ago, a guy walked into a Lane Bryant store in Tinley Park, Illinois. He herded six women into the back of the store and shot them in the head, killing five of them. He is currently at large.

My mother lives one suburb away from Tinley Park. It's not exactly South Central. The ONLY "danger" I've felt going to Borders and Tiger Direct there was a "fear" that I'd run out of gas once.

The "safest" place can get VERY dangerous in an instant. You don't have ANY say in the matter. You can only determine how you'll react and whether you'll be prepared when you need to react.

I'm not saying that you HAVE to carry. I'm just saying that you should realistically assess WHY you don't want to carry. If it's because you don't think you "need" to, just ask yourself how you'll know when you WILL need to carry. I'll bet that if those six women had that ability, they'd have gone to Dress Barn instead of Lane Bryant that day. I doubt you or I have any better ability to predict the future.

When I was in the process of getting my CCW, I didn't think I'd carry all the time too. But after I got it, I started thinking along the lines of the seatbelt analogy. Is this the day I won't need my seatbelt? Just a short trip to the store...do I need to wear my seatbelt? After all, I never have needed my seatbelt.

I live in Pennsylvania but work in New Jersey. So I can"t carry during the day. I do carry when I am home and on the weekends. Carry a concealed weapon in the Peoples Republic and getting cought would mean time in prison plus losing my rights in PA. Not worth the risk.

I've been thinking of getting my wife one, if for no other reason than to let her transport my loaded weapon in her car without breaking the law. Utah keeps going back and forth in the legislature with that one. She doesn't have the inclination to carry most other times.

As stated before, you should pretty much carry anytime you are legally allowed to. To do otherwise, opens the possibility of exploiting the grey area of pre-meditation. "Why did you put on your gun THIS particular night? Were you PLANNING on shooting someone?"

And what exactly is your gun too bulky for? Comfort is relative. Adjust your lifestyle to fit the best gun. Don't compromise the gun to accommodate your lifestyle. Full-size guns have the best sight radius for aiming, and the most weight to soak up recoil.

A lot of people I know here in Florida carry a big gun in their vehicle and carry a Kel Tec P3AT or P32, or Smith 642 on their person. These are small and light enough to always carry.

i carry in my console mostly but i also RC rockcrawl by myself in somewhat remote areas where i feel better with my 45 on my person.

i do have a permit!

Deanimator,

You are right. I do consider where I live relatively safe at least my routes and places I work and shop. But you have a very valid point in that a bad thing can happen anywhere. I may warm up to the idea of carrying once I get the CCW. Thanks for the advice.

I like the seatbelt analogy!

I was in a motorcycle accident 17 years ago, just coasting up to a red light on the way home from work. I was hit by a driver flying out of a parking lot. I wore my full protection helmet and leaters even in the hot summer. The helmet saved my head. Unfortunately I lost a leg.

It can happen anywhere, anytime.

I find myself carrying more and more now, especially since I literally cannot "run away."

My personal feelings as a permit holder, I'm going to carry whenever & wherever possable. The reason for that is; you will probably need it when you least expect it. Like having a fire extringuisher; hope you never have to use it but it's there if you need it. LM

I've had a license for over 12 years now. I decided early on that it was far more dangerous to carry just part of the time. How do I know when I will need it? And I don't ever want to have to stop and think, do I have my gun with me or not? I carry always. It is a habit and just part of my everyday routine. I feel naked without it. I've never had to use it but if I ever need it I know it will be there.

Excalibur: What you said makes a lot of sense. I am getting that "naked" feeling w/o carrying.

I carry when working, loading and unloading the truck at gun shows. Carry in car when we go somewhere, and when I go hunting thats about it.

I teach CCW classes. I'm amazed at how many students spend the money and time to take the class, yet wind up very rarely carrying a gun.

The usual lines I get are some variation on:
"It's too much hassle. My gun is too big. I just want in case I go somewhere dangerous," etc.

I don't dispute that most people here who have responded to the question in the past DO carry. I'm just saying someone who posts here in more into guns then the average person who takes a CCW class and thus is more likely to carry.

In my experience, I'd gues only about a third of my students wind up carrying on a regular basis. Almost no one can carry 24/7/365 due to the "no carry" zones outlined in our state laws.

I`m in western NC and about the only place one can carry around here is in your own yard. If i am ever robbed "ect" i plan to sue big time because the CCW laws are so strict. :scrutiny:

I carried the first day that I got my CCW. Then I didn't carry for almost a month afterwards.

That's when the USP45 Tactical I had ordered was received by the FFL.

The first day with my CCW, I had borrowed my father's 4" Taurus .38 special revolver just to carry for that day, then returned it to him at the end of the day.

I didn't even OWN a pistol of my own until the USP45 Tactical came in.

I do have to admit that I may find myself without a firearm sometimes in the summer in El Paso, as I no longer own the NAA Mini Revolver that I did in the past, and even a Kel-Tec PF-9 is sometimes difficult to carry in a comfortable AND easy to draw manner when you're dressed for an El Paso summer.
