I come from a family with pretty mixed political views. My mom is an antigun liberal. My dad was quite conservative but never saw the need for having one. Nobody in my family owns firearms besides me. Didnt shoot a gun until boy scouts, after that, basic training. When i was old enough i bought a shotgun. then a 22. Its my biggest hobby. Anyone else here first generation? I hope to start a family tradition of my own here.

k9870: why don't you re-do this thread as a poll?

Maybe a bit more complex--e.g., four or five choices, along the lines of

5) Many, many preceding
4) Fourth Gen
3)....
1) First Gen

My father has always been a hunter, deer 30-06 and grouse 12g pump 32" barrel. I on the other hand am less of a hunter, more of a shooter. See my list on New Members thread.

My dad and mom were very anti-gun, mom alot more so. Dad's grandpa was general in Batista's army so he was slightly more open to the though. When I turned 18 I bought myself a Savage 116 and took my dad to the range. He now owns a patriot arms .308 and is obsessed with everything that is rifles. Mom comes out now too, so maybe something got started here.

Other--firearms have been part of my family's history for at least five or six generations--with the last three probably being the most active.

Almost first gen. My Dad had a shotgun that never knew him to use, and a non-functional breaktop Iver Johnson .38 revolver from my Mom's father.

1st generation here. My family is from Mexico and firearms are illegal there. My mom was your typical mother that was afraid of guns and what might happen to us kids. My dad's family didn't own any guns either. I decided to get a gun after I witnessed somebody trying to break into our house while us kids were home alone.

Father's side we don't know. Grandpa (mother's side) was president of TSRA and has won several Bullseye National Championships for handguns, some of you Texans actually may be familiar with him.

Funny thing is, my gun hobby began before I knew that about my grandpa. I knew he shot, but had no idea how much and how well. Lead must run in our blood or something :)

My grandfather hunted for a little while in the 80's o.0. over the years his guns disappeared. my dad sucks therefore I'm in a different state than him [and freaking loving it], so i don't know about him. My mom has never really owned a gun. Now my step-father , the wanker that he is/soon to be ex-stepfather, truly introduced me to guns in a sort. I saw a massive gun cellar in upstate new york, and that was it for me.

not quite the first, but pretty close...

my dad did the old "revolver in a shoebox in the closet" thing, but they weren't really talked about in my house. i remember very vividly the day i ran across it while looking through his dirty magazines. fortunately, i was no dummy and had no intention of "playing with it". i would say that incident made me fairly anti for much of my adolescence. it wasn't until i was much older that i came around to the idea of gun ownership. it's funny to me that parents think they can hide anything from their kids, and i have vowed not to make that same false assumption with my own kids.

overall, parents were neither pro nor anti. my younger brother had one for awhile but gave it to his father-in-law who he felt needed it more than him. i am the only member of my family with a serious interest in guns. i wish i could get more of them to take seriously the defense of themselves and their families, but i'm afraid that years of living in the suburbs has convinced them that it won't happen to them.

my mom's family probably has some members with guns, perhaps even several of them. but i really wouldn't know because i made a choice long ago to have nothing to do with those people.

now my wife's family...they are extremely pro-gun...

Dad's folks started carrying guns as soon as they escaped from the British in Georgia, crossed the Appalachians, hooked up with the Cherokees, Creeks, and Coosas, and started making whiskey.

Mother's people weren't big on guns. Mostly Poles and Jews that entered from the California side in the 1860s. Peaceable farmers, mostly, just glad to be away from Europe.

guns have been in my family for a long time but until now there has never been talk about RKBA infringments so I think we all have become a little more prideful and serious about our ownership.

Paternal family was Quaker who escaped from Britain way back. Dad was the first gun owner and that for hunting. I was the first to join the military and that was for defense of my country.

The maternal side of my family were Virginia tobacco farmers. The household firearm was a single shot Remington 12 gauge. My paternal grandfather had a 9 round H&R .22LR revolver, his WWII Garand, and a few Civil War muskets. Unfortunately, he sold them to raise some cash after he retired. My old man didn't speak to him for a month after telling him we'd help with anything, don't sell any of the guns.

I'm first gen at 35. My dad is pure anti. He equates guns to venomous snakes, his worst phobia. My mom has gone to the range with me because she respects my opinions and because she rocks. Other people in my family are gun-ignorant and not really anti.

funny thing is antis never know a thing about guns, line a shotgun and a rifle side by side my mom probably couldnt tell the difference

I'm a first gen shooter. Both of my grandfathers were farmers and had guns on the farm, my aunt has guns but doesn't really shoot. I got into guns through scouts and my aunt. My mom is mildly scared and completely misinformed about guns. My dad doesn't really like them, thinks I don't "need them," but he shoots with me sometimes.

I think my familys anti gun bias and lack of shooting while growing up with friends who hunt and shoot telling me how fun it was led to my obsession with firearms. Im wondering if i shot occasionally growing up if it would be as much of a hobby, but im so glad it is, going plinking with friends and grabbing a good meal is one hell of a good day:D
