Being that I'm currently being bitten by the i-want-another-gun bug, and I'm reading all these fine posts about you fellas going crazy and buying guns with no stopping in sight, I was curious what sorta turnover do you folks average per year? How many guns do you buy a year? How often to you get the serious urge for THAT gun?

My husband says no, I can't get another pistol now as I just purchased my Beretta in Sept/Oct, then my Taurus shortly after, around Nov. Now I want, scratch that, NEED a SIG 225. Am I out of my seemingly reasonable mind?! While I have only 500 rounds in the Cheetah and 100 in the Taurus, is it too early to be looking for a new gun? I mean, I love what I have and have absolutely no intention of not using them. They all go to the range with me and I just figured what would it hurt to put another into the rotation?? When is it too soon?

Welcome to the forum Shorts. As long as you have the money, when you get the itch I say scratch it! The law in Virginia is "one a month", so you're behind almost two months!

That's easy. Buy guns as much as you can and cannot afford. If you like it and have the dough, get it.

I wish my wife thought like you.

Oh yeah, she does - only thing is she buys shoes.

Seriously, how many shoes does a woman need???

Turnover would mean selling some, so that doesn't really apply to me.

Scenario 1.
A certain gun will catch my eye. The longing begins. I obsess on it. I research it. Go over all my (many) gun mags for reviews on it. Read about it. Cruise the newstands to look at new gun mags that mention or review it. Search the forums for info. Price accessories for it.

Scenario 2.
I realize there is a niche in my collection I don't have filled yet. ("If I were to go varmit hunting, what would I use. I mean I have several that would work, but do I have a dedicated rifle?" "What would I use for bear protection up in Alaska?") All the above behavior is the same.

[I'm currently on a SIG binge, so that may be another new scenario popping up.]

After going through all the above, and prolonging the wait as long as I possibly can, I purchase. Clouds part, Angels sing, and all is well in the world. :D

A couple of weeks later............ the cycle repeats.

I usually buy more than I need, but not as many as I want.

But seriously, I tend to buy a gun when the urge strikes, after doing a fair bit of research on it. I've got fun guns and collectible guns and sporting/hunting guns. The type usually depends on the season and what ever catches my eye either on gun boards like this, in conversations with friends, or in browsing through gun shows/stores.

I don't usually make impulse purchases - though my deblued Marlin 336 project gun was an impulse purchase I am still regretting. Rather, I get a bit obsessive about something and seek as much info out on it as possible and then do the search for just the right example of that gun.

Luckily, the research part keeps the total numbers down . . . .

Virginia is "one a month", so you're behind almost two months!
Is she even in Virginia? I thought she was in Washington. Nevertheless, Virginia no longer has a one a month restriction - at least as long as you have a CCW.

LOL she says the same about you "Seriously, how many guns does a man need?" ;)

Hmm maybe I should cut a deal with my husband...since he likes video/PC games so much...every time he gets a toy, I get a toy :D

You should order one from www.cdnninvestments.com catalog while they are cheap right now then. No time like the present!

As for how many guns, currently, I have 35 guns, and I have been into them since Jan of 2002. I have sold 2 in the past, and traded one for my current total. Technically, two of my current 35 were gifts from my wife... but she got the better end of the the deal each time. I bought a Walther P99 for her and a SiG P230, while she got me a $60 single shot 12 gauge shotgun, and a Taurus Tracker .357 revolver.

But the old surplus firearms like Mausers and such have helped me scratch the buying itch since they are all so inexpensive for nice pieces.

Until you buy the ones you like, you will always have them in the back of your mind bugging you. Might as well get them out of the way, then you can start getting accesories like extra magazines and holsters!

Last year I was up 5 and 11 changed hands. This year I'm already up 1. I need to pay for all of these though :uhoh: I've even considered selling some but I LIKE all of them. That's why I bought them. So I'm selling off my other hobbies instead :D My musical instruments help paid for a couple guns :)

I refuse to count. I start my excel spreadsheet at some odd number row. That way when I am asked "How many do you have?" I can honestly answer I dunno. Plus should BP rifles count the same as modern firearms? C&R helped me jump the Avg up there with $60 rifles. Now I am at a constant number and I'm just buying accessories like scopes and Ammo.

I do two a year. The money is there for that many, and it keeps the itch under control if I do the winter fall cycle.

I read that and actually thought I had already responded to this thread - seriously! Did make a deal with her though - every pocketbok (all Coach) = a new holster (all Mitch Rosen). :p

I put $50 from each paycheck into the "gun fund". If I find a specific gun I'd want, if the funds are there, I buy it. Usually I'm saving for a particular modl. So, how many per year? Depends. So far it's 2. Betting on at least 2 more maybe 3 and possibly 4 depending on costs. Usually between $1500-$3500 per year depending on bonuses.

1 every coupla weeks

but i mostly buy military surplus.. we aint talking 800 dollar sigs here, 89,95 no.4's 75.00 91/30's you get the idea.

well, so far this year, its been a new rem 700 lvsf (7-08), a new 700 lvsf (22-250), a new 700 adl (300 win), and am planning on a pair of sig 229's (both in 40), and a sig 226 (40), and if it hits dealer shelves, remington's new target rifle (all before the year is up).

also expect to have a custom built, though i already own the donor action, so don't know if that counts.

so, by the time this year is up, it looks like it will be around 10-12, even though only 7 are accounted for right now, i always find some sort of must-have, or even worse, impulse buys...

My goal is to have one gun for each year I've been here, that way getting old ain't so bad. I'm 53 and have 44 guns, so I guess I have to get nine this year just to catch up. I think I sold seven or eight last year (Colt Trooper, two P1s, two SKSs, Colt Woodsman, Grendel .22, BHP) so I was getting close.

So far for 2005, I have purchased a Glock 17, traded a Ruger Mark II and almost traded a Glock 23 for a Colt. Last year I ended up with a Kimber TLE, Springfield TRP, a Colt Officer ACP and a Savage 110. My wife gets really pissed about the gun of the month but I work a crap load of overtime to add money to my weapon aquisition fund. ;)

I'm a bit with Roadkill - one per year of being around!! I turn 60 in not many weeks and am fortunate to be right now ''in excess'' .. surplus if you will!

All is down to funds in many ways. I have been fortunate that with liquidated assets from five years ago when I left UK - I have been able to indulge and move things along a bit! And how! ''Investment Honey'' :p

As a younger guy, I doubt I'd manage more than four a year. As an ol' phart - I <cough> have exceeded this - embarrassingly! <cough> :)

And here I was thinking that Virginia was one of the better states for gun rights.

WOW I am glad that I am not the only one that will obsess over a new purchase. I have an ongoing list that I keep to help me decide what my next purchase will be. I even take a list to gun shows so I know what I am interested in and how much I should pay at the show. I also do a lot of research before any purchase so that I know what I am getting into.

Not necessarily directed at Shorts

My advice for someone starting out yet headed in the direction of a gun "collection" is to buy quality not quantity. In the long run you'll be glad that you did. A quality gun will last a lifetime and always be enjoyable to shoot. A less expensive gun will get pushed aside or to the back of the safe when you get something of higher quality.

And here I was thinking that Virginia was one of the better states for gun rights.

It actually is. That's the only super stupid law we have. And if you have CCW it doesn't apply.

Before I got my C&R - less than 1 a year - don't make enough $. Now, about 3-4 a year, or more, if i get all the raises due me.....hehehehehehe......
