How many here have killed a chronograph?

Count me in.

Blasted my Competition Electronics chrono.

Got sloppy. New gun with an optic (higher than irons) plus heavier-recoiling ammo led to a low shot.

.45 acp Underwood 185 gr +P JHP just caught the edge. If it was a FMJ I bet it would have skipped just enough to not destroy the thing.

But instead it launched 10 ft off the table while the assembly came apart in spectacular fashion.

I ordered another but there goes $130.

Anyone else?

I have not done it...yet. But I have heard that Caldwell used to offer a program where they would repair or replace their models if you pay to ship them. If they cannot repair it, you pay a reduced price for the new one (they keep the broken one to re-use the components). I've no idea if this is still a valid program.

Yup. Lost a Chrony F1 to a sudden thunderstorm. Forgot all about it. Lost two Chrony’s to lead poisoning; only one was by me, the other was by a shooting buddy. My current Chrony is relatively scar free, but it is on its second set of skyscreens.

I shot my CE. At the time, they would repair or replace a chronograph for half the list price, so I sent in the wreckage.
But by the time I spent shipping both ways and half of list price, I could have saved time by buying one on sale at Midway with shipping included.

The way to protect your chronograph is to shoot from a rest. I shot that one by omitting a load and deciding to just snap off five more shots offhand rather than rebuild my position on the bench. Wrong answer.

I use the replacement CE although its wired remote doesn't work even after a warranty repair.
I also have a CED (different company) which has the brain box on the bench and only the screens in the line of fire. That provides for cheaper repairs but all the cabling is tedious to string.

Which one I take out depends on how many loads I want to chronograph.
For a few, I take the CE and trot out to the unit to reset for each string. I can usually get to the range on a weekday so I am not inconvenienced by other people wanting to shoot while I am resetting.
For a lot, I take the CED and spend the time to string wires, then just run everything from the bench.

I hit one of the steel pieces holding the screens up. I got lucky it just pulled it out and bent it. No damage to the chronograph, I am switching over to wood rods so if it happens again it for sure won’t break the plastic around the mounting hole.

Did the same. Wooden dowels from Home Depot and I'm set. Works.

Never killed one but I did wound one once. It was "running" at the time. The leg on the tripod holding it up decided to telescope in just at the time I fired a 165 grain bullet from my 300 Savage. It hit the metal post holding the screen. Broke the inside housing and of course bent the rod into a really cool shape. After some superglue surgery and a new post it was as good as new. Now I double check the tightness and aim for the middle.

Well, I didn't kill it, but I severely wounded my Oehler 33P when testing loads for the .500 NE. Clipped the forward skyscreen body - bits of plastic flew in graceful arcs, the skyscreens flopped over on their bar, and my vocabulary of invective got a workout. Fortunately, the sensors themselves were not destroyed, so the damaged parts were fairly easily replaced. I do use a Chrony, which is easier to set-up, and works fine for most testing, but expect a hit on the box would do more damage than to the Oehler's separate skyscreens.

Shot my friends ProChrono. Replaced it, and bought one for myself. Friends don’t let friends shoot over their chrono!

A buddy shot mine, and did the same. I didn't know it happened until he gave me the new replacement. Replacements are 1/2 price, he never said if he had to return the wreckage.
