how many is enough?

I would apply the adage, "One is none and two is one."

I use this school of thought.

Call me paranoid, but I decided I needed 15 AK mags and 20 AR mags in case something bad DOES happen. I have doubled this and applied it to my budget. I am NOT going to spend a few grand on a few amazing rifles and find that I can't shoot them anymore in 10 years because I didn't buy enough $15 magazines.

Wouldn't you feel stupid?

While the legal atmosphere has been increasingly more tolerant for gun owners and the Second in the last decade, I can see a situation where another ignorant gun & acessories ban occurs, and I, personally, have little to no control over how long it lasts.

Sorry for any misspellings or abominations of punctuation. I drank quite a few wonderful Quads tonight. I don't even know why I'm on here. :D

At least 2 mags, 3 is just right. Anything more is overkill.

I vote for overkill, especially if they are going to become scarce. I have 10 mags for my G17 and 22 for my AR.

Logically, if you use it as a defense gun, you should have at least four. Two to keep loaded with defense ammo, and two to take to the range.

My revolvers don't need magazines. :)

But to answer your qestion, I think about 4 is about right. That is about what I have on stuff I shoot a lot.

... im just wondering just how many mags are enough? ... ... just how many mags do yall have?
Need & Have ... two very different critters.

In the Need Category I think that about 4-5 is about right ... that said, mostly due to the sunsetted AWB, I Have a whole lot more than that for most of my detachable-mag firearms. The Worst/Best case is my stock of G3 Alloy mags (for G3 & CETME C SA clones) ... I must have 125 of those. Several years ago one of the vendors had a 50 for $50 VG/LN Mag sale so I got 2 boxes (and most of them are LN) ... to go along with the ~25 that I had already accumulated by ~2003.

Thank goodness I also stockpiled enough inexpensive ammo with which to (re)fill all of my many mags. ;)

My guidelines? An even dozen per gun that get rotated through when I'm out shooting. That many more mags that have been tested and are now being held in reserve. Have enough spring/follower kits to rebuild them all once. That's minimum. More depending on space/budget constraints.

You get to that point, and you should never need to acquire another magazine in that guns serviceable lifetime.

I'm also the kind of guy that keeps two small parts/spring kits per gun as well.

Part of this is me looking forward: I hope to have sons one day, I have nephews now. When it's my turn to go, I hope to pass some on.

Want to go the other way, aka red dawn/road warrior/TEOTWAWKI?

I can have enough of my mags loaded and in ammo cans/backpacks ready to move out that the weight would be the limiting factor in under 10 minutes. That is a lot of ammo.

If you own enough magazines, and you store your ammo on stripper clips, also keep the correct mag adapters with said ammo, you can have one heck of a lot of ammo ready for use in very short order.

lets try this aproach enough=the number that fits your needs + 1 for your wants

No such thing as enough when they go up in value like they've been doing. I'm kicking myself for not getting a bunch more VZ58 mags when Centerfire had them for $10...and more AK mags when Sportsmans Guide had them for $6.25...and more HK mags when Tapco had them for $1.

For personal use, it's worth considering how your effective number of magazines drops when you start getting duplicate guns. Twenty five mags for an AK is pretty good...25 mags for three AKs, not so much.

10 for the AR
4 for the AK
3 for the Glock
3 for the XD
4 for the CZ
3 for the S&W 22A
5 for the ruger 10/22
3 for the Makarov
3 for the Kel-tec P11

Thats all I can remember at the moment..

The reason I chose a dozen:

A dozen mags for whatever gun, loaded, I can carry without much trouble. Any more than that and weight/ease of movement becomes an issue. And a dozen loaded mags ought to be enough to accomplish whatever needs accomplished. If it isn't, I needed a squad anyway.

My best friend is a United States Marine and he says that they require a basic load of 30 M-16 mags (not all of which must be readily accessible, I forget how many he said they are expected to be able to have immediate access to, some they carry in reserve in their pack).

I plan to get upwards of 200-300 more AR-15 magazines since I have this long-term goal of buying 4-5 more AR-15 rifles so I can equip at least a fire-team with AR-15s if I need to. I'd ultimately prefer to have a dozen or two dozen Bushmaster AR-15A3s, although I might settle for A2s, whatever I can get quantity discounts on. For each rifle I'd buy, I'd want at least 20 of the 30 round magazines and maybe 5-10 of the 20 round magazines.

As far as ammo, I am generally a firm believer in the principle of having at least enough ammo to keep the mags loaded and then to reload each magazine at least 2-4 times (depends on the caliber, capacity of the mag, etc)...

Did you see that I changed my mind to a 4 magazine limit?

speaking of AR mags, anyone have some of those new AR mags HK came out with? i have heard very good things about these mags.

getting at least 10 mags for each weapon or each weapon type (i have an AR-15 and an M4, and five mags each you bee enough)
five extra mags for each high capacity handgun (over 10 rounds) sounds good.
maybe 8 extra mags for each weapon that holds less than 10.

what good is extra ammo if you dont have the mags for it?

just a thought, the magazine is the weak link in any firearm, plus, in high stress situations, a magazine can be dented, the feed lips damaged, or it can be lost. just like a spare tire for your truck, it never hurts to have extras.

and with a new magazine ban a possiblity in the near future...

the last line is: buy more mags and Hillary Clinton sucks.

Icebones, I've actually started buying the new magpul magazines myself. From my limited experience, the infamous youtube video, and others reports on them, they seem to be the best bang for the buck by a mile.

Here's what I've got currently :

M-1 30 Carbine = (4) 15 rd magazines

Marlin 22 mag = (3) 7 rd magazines

XD-40 = (4) 12 rd magazines, (2) 10 rd magazines, (1) 11 rd pro-mag, and (2) 20 rd pro-mags.

Taurus Mil-Pro 40 = (3) 10 rd magazines, I'd like a couple more for this one, but at $40 a peice, damn.:(

Ruger 22/45 = (5) 10 rd magazines.

If a gun-banner gets into office, I'll definitely be buying at least 2 more magazines for my XD-40.

Actually I don't think you can have to many magazines. However if you have to have a number I would say double your combat load.

For me that is 6 per handgun, and 14 per rifle. That is for my military style weapons. I only have 6 for my BLR, but I have more than that for my 10-22.

There is not hard fast rule. Just remember without a magazine, those are real awkward single shots.

The more the better! For my 2 XD-45's I have 8 13rd mags and 1 10rd mag. I have another accessory kit coming with 3 more and I'll be buying more 13 rd ones when I can.

I don't like to spend my time at the range loading mags so I'll take 10 loaded mags for my 1911's and a bunch for the AR. Can't have too many.

I did not know that revolvers needed Mags:D.. If you have something that needs them I keep 4 or 5 around the house for each Semi.. But I rarely take more than two Mags to the range....

lets see...
5- 10/22
8- m1 carbine
about 50 enbloc's for Garand
2- glock
4- 45
2-380
and when I get An AR and an AK I'll get at minimum of 5 each
