With all this nonsense coming down, how many mags for a particuler rifle would be good to have as a minimum ? My neighbor has 5 for an ar, i have 38;is that overkill?

No, 38 is a reasonable number if it makes you feel content. You might need more however. Look at it this way: if you bought them at fair market value (i. e. before mid December) then they will only increase in value. It's like having silver coins.

As many as I had the foresight to buy these last 30 years.:D Really tho I don't have any, all lost in the canoe accident last year.

("they will only increase in value. It's like having silver coins"). If they are banned from public use or sale, they might wind up worthless unless the world ends or its sold under the table...

One Million. Per weapon.

OK, for real for real, my minimum comfort level is 5 per pistol, 10 per rifle. Some magazines are so damn expensive it's hard to get more than 3 per pistol when you have so many pistols!

It depends on the gun and intended use.

One mag for my .25 is sufficient, tho I'd like 3

But for primary full capacity guns, 24 is good. (4 sets of 6, or 8 sets of 3)

For an AR? 50 is good.

Hmmm 38 mags. Wow. Not over kill at all, your showing your 2nd Amendment right. But to me 5 is defiantly not enough. My dad thought I was nuts to have 15 when he has 3.

But I guess it all in the eyes of the beholder.

What's the old saying the robber baron coined re: money? Something like...
  • "Sir, you have so much money... How much is enough?"
  • "One dollar more."
Based on that logic, have as many as you desire. :)

FWIW, I think the standard combat loadout for a modern infantryman is something like 210-300 rounds (7-10 thirty round magazines).

A dozen AR mags is probably enough for most anyone. By no means am I suggesting you shouldn't have more, though.

For most other firearms? I find 3-5 to be plenty.

I'd suppose it mostly depends on your ammo budget. :D

You don't need a ton of magazines as long as you maintain those that you have. Good magazines tend to hold up well.

On the third hand, you should have enough that if replacement parts (springs, mostly) become unavailable, you have a back up or three.

More is better, obviously. But, if you are expecting to hold off the commie hoards by yourself, you will be lucky to make it through your second magazine. Let's hope it never gets to that sad day. If it does, rally enough friends and patriots, that you have time to reload.

If I am in a situation where 2 30 rounders isn't enough I am in pretty big mess. lol No but seriously I wish I had bought more. only takes one bad drop or stepping on one to have one less.

It is all about comfort- whatever makes you comfortable, that's the number.

For me, that number is 13 magazines per firearm (pistol or rifle), but your number will likely differ from others'.

With current equipment that the military has you wont even get to empty one magazine. It could be that some people are not very relistic should trubble comes their way. Get all that makes you feel good but Id bet that most will not survive to empty two.

A good friend gave me 2, 1-30 and 1- 20, for what they cost him, 15 bucks.

Depends on what you're comfortable with. I'll admit that I only have 5 mags for my AR. For certain handguns I only have a single mag (and several with 2). The most mags I have for any gun is 10 for my Ruger P95 (though they're a mix of types and capacity - 3 10 rnds, 4 15 rnds, 2 17, and 1 30-rnd).

What makes you think that anyone is going to need magazines for their weapons for the purpose of going up against the U.S. military?
Why would you think the military would attack U.S. citizens on American soil?

During the L.A. riots Korean merchants used what are refered to as "assault weapons" with "normal capacity magazines to guard their businesses. The rioters left them alone, but should they have decided to attack the merchants, those magazines would have come in very very handy.
And there have been others living out in the "boondocks" somewhere that have been attacked by gangs that have found it handy to have a semiauto rifle with multiple magazines handy.

magazines are wear items. don't get married to them.

if you shoot mostly from the bench, they will probably last many years. if you train a lot, you will damage a few. when they are $8, you tend not to care too much about damaging them. When they are $40, you will probably be more careful

with $1.30/rnd 223rem, i'm guessing mags will last a lot longer than they used to

even so, it depends on whether you are collecting them just for yourself, or your kids and grandkids

It depends on what the law ends up restricting and on how much you shoot the gun in question and how you use the gun.

If it restricts the transfer of mags but not possession or use, then you need enough to last the rest of your life. If you shoot the gun a lot in a situation where you need full-capacity magazines (e.g. stressing competitions) then you would need a lot of magazines. People who compete in "practical" style competitions and shoot a lot, wear magazines out on a regular basis.

If you just plink or shoot at the range, then you can make do with just a few--especially since you will probably be able to buy "neutered" magazines even after a ban on the manufacture and/or transfer of high-capacity mags.

If it restricts possession or use, then your 38 mags are worth just about nothing. You would have to destroy or surrender them, or find a legal buyer (maybe a friend who's in LE and has a similar gun).

It might be more prudent to put some money into supporting gun advocacy groups and effort into contacting appropriate legislators as opposed to trying to buy a lifetime supply of magazines that might end up being illegal in a few months anyway.
