How many magazines do you like to have for a given gun? Why?

Like someone else has said, I hate reloading mags at the range so I like to have at least enough to hold 100 rounds for pistols, 200 for rifles like ARs or AKs, and 100 rounds for rimefire semiautos. Now, I consider this a minimum and I tend to pick up new mags when I have the chance, so between wear, damage, and possible political action I don't think I can have too many.

For the AR I buy extras when they are cheap. Up to 16 30rd and a 20rd for prone. I'll buy about 20 more to maximize the life span of what I have.

I have 2-10 rd, 4-50 rd, and 4-30 rd bananas for my 10/22.
I have the 3-5 rd mags my AK came with, to which I have added 4-40 rd bananas and 2-75 rd drum magazines.
These are the only rifles that take removable magazines.

A lot. I carry a G26, I've got 33, 17, 12 and 10 rounders. I've got different sizes in my range bag. I've got spare mags in my car. I've got spare mags stashed around the house. I've got unopened mags in an ammo can. For my AR, 10 magazines loaded, yeah, ex military. My AR is my house long gun, I have 4 of them loaded with TAP, one in the gun and 3 in a bag with a flashlight. The others I keep in the range bag for the rifle. I've got a few more unopened in an ammo can. Pmags are cheap. I don't understand having just a few.

I swear, every time I buy a semi auto I spend almost as much money buying magazines for the darn thing as I do for the gun.

Then the next gun I buy is a revolver.

5 magazines for pistols, 15+ AK magazines for 2 guns, 12+ Pmags for 2 guns, and 6 FAL magazines for the FAL, with more to be ordered when convenient.

A bare minimum of six magazines.

This is enough to get you through most shooting matches with an extra magazine or two.

However, as someone who came of age during the Clinton-era magazine ban, I strongly believe that there's nothing wrong with having a large stash of magazines.

After all, magazines are semi-disposable items.

5 for pistols, one in the gun and four on the belt. One more than the standard LE load from back in the day. Rifles it depends. usually 6-8 (20 rnd) for the Mini-14. Other types that have removable mags usually 4.

Actually I don't know. I've have had the same basic gun set up for almost 40 years and I have purchased mags whenever they were on sale or I traded for them. If I looked around who knows. I know I have at least a dozen for my 1911, but I don't have many mag fed guns. I prefer bolt guns, lever guns and revolvers.

I also remember the 94' AWB, so try to have a minimum of 6 per handgun and 10 per rifle.

If I find a good price on mags I'll buy more than the minimum and even mags for guns I don't have but might buy someday or use for trade.

I like to buy mags but I find that at some point I won't carry all the mags I have and I don't really need any more than I can carry. I like about 5 mags for competition rifles, about the same number for my CCW guns but I never carry that many. I do keep them in the car though. I just find that the added weight of carrying so much ammo can be a real burden.

So about 5 per weapon is about right for me. I've had a lot more at times. I bought a bunch back during the AWB which was probably the best thing ever for mag makers. I bought all I could find but I ended up selling about half of them because I didn't really need them. I use an SKS for a battle carbine type weapon and I find that stripper clips are a lot less weight to carry around for the same amount of available ammo. I have a pouch that holds about 200 rounds on stripper clips. If I need more than that I also need someone to help me shoot it.

Minimum number of mags per gun? Never really thought about it, but for some reason, I like to have at least 10 dedicated magazines for each gun (or platform, unless it's the 1911, which you can never have too many mags for ...).

I don't have a hard floor or ceiling for the number of mags but my "soft" floor for CCW guns is 4-5. I have a dozen 13 round mags for my Browning Hi-Power and I'm pretty content to stand pat right there. I've got 7 x 15 round mags for my full sized USP9's (two of them) and 2 x 10 round mags- I plan to pick up at least 3 more 15 round mags. My USP45 Tactical has only been in my collection for a month so right now I only have two x 12 round mags...and that's not good at all! Gotta pick up at least 3 more when I can but they're super expensive (between $60 and $90 depending on where I can find 'em). I also picked up an HK P30S this week and just have 4 x 15 round mags right now. Again, as I can afford it I'll add to my stash until I have ten built up. The last gun that I actually CCW is a Beretta Nano. I have three x 6 round mags and 2 x 8 round. A couple more would be nice but I'm pretty content with what I have.

My only .22 right now is an old Ruger Mk I! Only three mags but it's just a beater/range gun so I don't really mind.

For me, the number of magazines reflects how often and how much I use or shoot the gun. I never particularly liked loading Ruger magazines in a 10/22 or Mark II, so I tend to have a fair number that fit those firearms. Otherwise, I will generally have 3-5 magazines in addition to the one in the gun. Anything less than that and I pretty much want to buy a magazine or three when I have the funds.

I have no fewer than four magazines for any of my semi-auto pistols; I have as many as 12.

At the range, more mags means less time reloading, and range time isn't cheap. Even if one is a member and not paying by the hour, someone is waiting to shoot. I know some ranges don't allow shooters to carry loaded mags onto the hot line, and for shooters there having more mags would seem to matter less.

For SD, I'm carrying only one spare anyway, so having more than two is overkill except for training and practicing. I don't currently take part in competitions (IDPA sounds like fun), but for the the pistols I might use I have enough mags if I should decide to start.

For my small-bore bolt-action rifles I have five each. For larger bore bolt-action rifles I have just one.

I have never owned a semi-auto rifle. If I owned one I'd be tempted to go through ammo like an IHOP goes through syrup. I'd need about fifty mags to be happy.

Some of my guns have only one or two mags. Some have a couple dozen. Depends on what I use the gun for. No set number.

I like to have 5.

One in the gun.

One in the range bag.

Three back up mags in a small pouch (I use a neoprene sunglasses case).

[Note: always have a min two pistols with 5 mags each, ready to go at all times]

My daily carry guns have at least 5 mostly for practice with them at the range but usually carry 2 one in the gun and one backup. I have 2 speed loaders for my 454 Casull for the range. It just lets me get the most shooting in the ranges that charge based on time as I load the magazines before going to the range so I don't spend the time there doing it.

At least one.

I'm not signing this one so nobody will know who posted it.

I like to have however many I am likely to use times 2 this amounts to 6 for most range guns, 4 for carry guns and 2 for collectables.

10. I figure 10 is a good lifetime supply to account for lack of future production, loss, damage, spares for range work, etc.

The only mag gun I have where I don't have 10 is an out of production bolt rifle for which I have 3. Currently, 4 factory spares would cost as much as the entire rifle is worth, LOL.
