I have two safe boxes, one upstairs, and one downstairs with .38 S&W revolvers that are always available as HD pistols, but my carry gun becomes my main HD gun, when I get home and take it off it goes near my bed. I don't see any reason to make things complicated, I carry a commander size 1911, and it should be fine for about anything you would want a pistol to do, at home or on the road.

I voted no although I have carried some of my HD guns on occasion and have pressed the pocket guns into the HD roll I don't regularly. I usually only pocket carry and leave a full size gun in a small safe on my nightstand.

It is available for HD, but not my main go to.

Usually, there is a pump 20-gauge in the corner nearest my bed, as well as a Sig 2022 in .40 on the nightstand. The wife has a 4-inch .38 revolver on her nightstand.

When I take it off, it usually goes on the coffee table beside my recliner or on the bar. Hey, nothing wrong with it being handy in there right? When I go to bed, it goes to the bedroom with me.

When my carry gun is on my hip, it is loaded. When not, it is empty. But, there are a couple of .45 revolvers and a .38 that are close to hand.

^ Bob, I hope you aren't rechambering an auto round every morning. I would be afraid of bullet setback if I did it that often.
My carry weapon gets unloaded when I go to the range. I swap the premium hollow points out for plinking ammo (that shoots to the same POI as my carry ammo) and then reload. Its every month or two. About once a year, I'll shoot up the mag of carry ammo and replace. It's prolly not necessary, but it makes me happy so I do it anyway. :)

The guns that I only use on the range are in the safe unloaded. Let's just say I have "more than one" gun for carry. If they are not on me they are usually still loaded and accessible when I am home.

My carry guns are M&P 9C and a Ruger LCP. My HD guns are a XDM 40C with light attached and full-size magazines, and a pair of shotguns. I could carry the XDM or use the M&P or LCP for HD, but that's not my plan.

Now that I've finally relocated back home to Washington State my primary CCW is a Glock 19, which when I was in Florida it was my primary HD handgun and a Kahr PM-9 was my CCW pistol.

My EDC gets put on the nightstand when I go to bed. It will be used to keep me safe while I retrieve the AR15. Likewise the wife's XDS is on her nightstand at bedtime.

Full size ^^^^^^ I love it. I carry different ones at different times. All full size 1911s. I wear my shirt out in the summer and for 20 years have never been ask....is that a gun.

"More often than not" wasn't an option in the poll, so I voted "yes". My PF9 does sometimes get placed bedside, but there is usually a service revolver or Ruger P95 up there instead.

Of course I do. My carry weapons is ALWAYS a potential choice.

But my home defense isn't based on any single weapon. I'm a weapon of opportunity kinda guy...I will not waste my time trying to get to that ONE weapon if there is anything else handy. And in my house there is a lot. A baseball bat, kitchen cuttlery, miscellaneous tools, even that stupid chrome plated toilet paper stand in the bathroom...all these are viable weapons.

The main goal of home defense is to get the family to safety and call for help and to take up a defensive position accordingly...not to seek out confrontation. Obviously, if confrontation seeks me out I'll act accordingly. But I know the lay of the land in my own home and I have home territory advantage...I will not give that up.

If my EDC is handy...fine. If my shotgun is handy...fine. But I'll not sacrifice any other weapon of opportunity by first attempting to get to a firearm that's elsewhere in the house. Rest assured...I'll be getting there eventually, but I won't arrive empty handed when I do.

:)

Exactly. If I'm in my home, I am either in my bedroom asleep, or in my livingroom 95% of the time. It's a small house so I can get to a loaded gun easily.

There is a S&W 686+ on the table next to my chair in the living room. There will very shortly be a HK45 on the nightstand next to the bed with a CT rail laser. (It was an FNP45, but I'm waiting for my HK to show up at my LGS. Better fit for my hand.)

My XDs carry gun is normally sitting on a dresser top in my bedroom, and is always loaded, so it is an option. But my first instinct will be to reach for the HK if in that room.

I shoot full sized guns more effectively, so that's what I use for home defense. A full sized gun will always be superior to a compact carry gun IMO. I don't find concealing a full size to be a lot of fun though, so there it is. Different tools for different jobs. Proficientcy is required for all of them.

I voted yes, cause the only other response was no. I have several EDCs and several night stand guns. Also, when I take my EDC off, it becomes a nightstand gun. I also have a SxS coach gun by the bed. What I grab when the dog barks or there's a bump in the night sometimes varies.

My EDC is my primary HD gun because I put it on when I get dressed and take it off when I go to bed and then it is in arms reach. Most of the time when I am home I am wearing it. I do have a long gun in the closet near my bed.

I shoot my carry gun well so it is also my HD. My wife shoots her carry well so it on the other side of our bed. All other guns are in our safe.
