Normal range trip:

50-200 of shotgun target loads (depends on how many rounds of trap my daughter and I shoot, goes up if HH6 comes along)

50-200 rounds of .22lr, again depends on whether HH6 comes with.

50 rds of .45acp (No one else likes to shoot it, but me.)

50-100 arrows on both the known distance range and on the 3D range.

about once a quarter 5-10 rounds of slugs and 00 buck through the HD shotgun

Looks like I am middle-of-the-road at 300-400 per session. Seems like I go thru 2 boxes (100 rounds) for whatever I am shooting, and bring 3 or 4 different guns to shoot.

I learned the hard way that too much of a good thing is not good for me. I do better shooting fewer rounds in concentrated practice (specific goals & objectives set out before the range session) than if I just send lots of lead downrange. I also spend more time at the range nowdays. Most of it is time not shooting - reviewing my performance, setting up specific drills, and quite a bit of what-have-you-got-there and would-you-like-to-try-this-one. (WARNING - look carefully at what I am offering to let you try, as I reallly like recoil and LOUD BOOMS. :D ) If I ever get time at a decent outdoor range I may offer to let you shhot a 4-bore - once.

stay safe.

Pistol: Usually 200-600 rounds of 9mm whenever I hit the range. My membership there gives me complimentary range time, but I need to buy their targets. Being that I have tons of ammo but no money, this limits me to the amount of targets I want to shred (normally 50 rounds per target).

Rifle: Wherever I go, my SKS comes with. Every range session I try to burn off 200-300 rounds of ammo. More, now that I'm burning off my corrosive Yugo stuff I got specifically for the free stripper clips. I have 1,500 rounds of Wolf 7.62x39 FMJ in a sealed ammo can for when I finish torching off the Yugo.

If I bring my .22, I usually put half a brick downrange. The groups are tiny <1 MOA, so I find myself shifting where I'm shooting at frequently so I actually get some feedback.

I just started handloading .30-06 and am trying to burn off my non-reloadable Olympic ammo. I'll have a few hundred casings coming in the next day, and I have enough powder, primers, and bullets on hand to load all of them. I've got a few dozen rounds of varying charge weights (6-10 rounds of each charge weight) to see if I can get that "sweet spot".

150-200 rounds of .45 through two 1911's.
150-200 rounds of 9mm through the 92F.
150 rounds through the M1.
50-200 rounds through whatever rifles I bring.

Usually 50-100 rounds per session. Depends on whether I bring both guns.

If I can afford it, I buy more ammo.

Only time I don't shoot off all the practice ammo I bring is when it gets dark before I run out (this has maybe happened no more than three times to me).

Usually, as time/weather permits, I hit the range about once or twice a month. More if I can afford it.

Yugo M48a, MilSurp 8mm

A mix between Ecuadorian and some Yugoslavian. I'm good for 100 easy at the range. Guy's thought I was nuts and wanted to see the black and blue on my shoulder after I was done, but after awhile the bruises just stopped showing up, guess i'm getting used to it lol

Firearms:
Winchester 1300 Field Shadow 12 ga.
Marlin Model 55 12 ga.
Savage 11FX .300WSM
Savage Mark II .22 LR
Marlin Model 60 .22LR
Winchester 9410 Lever .410 (Girlfriend's)
Ithica 20 ga. (Girlfriend's)

We take most (I usually leave the Marlin Model 55 at home...) I'll put 80 through the .300WSM minimum each visit. My daughter's keep my .22LR Speed-D-Loader filled to cap so I'll put a couple hundred through the Model 60. My daughter's keep the Mark II busy and will drop a couple hundred between them. My girlfriend just got hers less than a month ago and we've already put an average of 30 rounds of .410 per visit and 100 rounds of 20 ga. per visit.
With the rising cost of the .300WSM ammo, my reloading press sure get's a workout. I live 4 blocks from the range and am off when it's open... I guess I should have voted 500+ instead.... :D

A little less for me for two reasons. #1, I am going more often so am content with fewer rounds. #2, since "consolidating" my collection down to .38/.357 wheelies and .45 1911's I usually shoot one or the other only. (Take the revos on one trip and shoot the .45's the next time I go.) I usually stick with two boxes (100 rounds), sometimes 150.

crazyXgerman,

i'm curious: when you go to the range, how many rounds do you end up firing on average?
On the average 100 to 200. However that depends on what mood I'm in, which guns I bring, and weather or not I'm working with a specific gun or just practicing.

bonus questions:

do you fire every single round you brought, or do you always bring more than you fire?
It seems I always have ammo left over. I can't remember the last time I shot everything I brought with me.

does your budget usually dictate how many rounds you fire?
On one hand yes. My budget dictates how many hours I can spend at the range. That limits how much ammo I can shoot. On the other hand I keep ammo in reserve so I'm not dependent on how much money I have at any given time. Usually no where near enough. :(

How many rounds?

Depends on what I'm doing.

If I'm load testing, I fire a round, check the impact, record the velocity and restack my brass. Obviously, that's not high volume shooting.
Practising for National Match Course requires some offhand, some setting and prone rapidfire and some prone slowfire. Usually a minimum of 10 rounds each.

If I'm practising for handgun, there's more. Practising for a PPC match, I'll probably shoot up 150 to 200 rounds, all at 25 and 50 yards. Practising for bullseye, usually a minimum of 30 rounds, (slow, timed and rapid).

If I had a place where I could shoot multiple targets, I'd probably do more defense work, probably 50 rounds or so.

However, trying to do all this at once is self-defeating. Shooting too much can tire one out and lead to sloppy practise. Better 10 rounds fired with deliberation and intent than 50 blazed off at the far berm.

Unless it's plinking day. The sky's the limit. But I can't really plink at the local ranges, dangit!

.308 day --

Savage Model 10 = 30 - 50 handloads

Springfield M1A = 100 - 200 Port, Aussie, or SA surplus

.223 day --

RRA CAR-15 = 200 LC or Olympic

Ruger Mini-14 = 90 - 120 LC or Olympic

Pistol day --

Glock 17C = 50 - 100 handloads (147 gr) or WWB 115 gr

Colt SAA = 24 - 36 .45LC

.22 day --

Ruger 10/22 = 100 - 200 Federal Bulk

Marlin Model 60 = 5 - 20 Federal Bulk (jam-o-matic, but man, is it accurate)

Add in a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870 every other month or so shooting trap, and that's every Sunday afternoon throughout the month.

Farnham:

I have a Marlin Model 60 and just got done putting over 2k of Federal bulk through it over 2 days with one standard cleaning between. No jams, no feed issues, no problems except I didn't bring enough... ;)

I was trying to find out how the rifle would react with a heated/overheated bbl. Accuracy drifted but not enough to complain about.

Kinda makes me curious if yours is a common problem and I have the exception to the rule or what...

I've got two ranges I frequent...an inside pistol calibers only, and an outside shoot everything up to .50BMG. I try to go twice a week winter and summer.

When I go to the pistol range I bring 3 or 4 guns (mix and match) of various calibers. I usually shoot 100-200 rounds thru each, sometimes more. The 8 pistols I own at the moment are .22, .38, .357, 9x18, 9mm, and .45.

When I go to the outdoor range I will bring a mixture of the above pistols, and at least three long guns or shotguns....22s, 7.62s, and a 12ga alley sweeper. I'll generally run 100 rounds thru the rifles, and a couple of dozen thru the reloadable claymore.

Shooting my guns a lot sometimes gives me a hankerin' to try something else, and at least once a week I'll rent something ($10) different.

Here is a picture of the case I took one day recently to the indoor range...five pistols and a rifle. A 1022, Kimber .45, Mak, P22, S&W Model 36, and a Colt Trooper. I probably burned up close to 1000 rounds altho most of it was .22s and 9x18. More than usual, but one of my sons and my daughter were down for a visit and they came along for the blasty goodness.

I've got nothing exotic to buy on the horizon. I want a long barrel .357, an accurate 30-06 in a boltie this time around, and something like a SAA in .357...maybe a Baretta Stampede. Unfortunately the horizon doesn't come with money at the moment.

Berek, I've heard about numerous Model 60's that run all day long with never a problem, so I think I'm the exception. I've cleaned it to surgical standards, replaced the extractor/ejectors, the springs, and sacrificed a bucket of KFC to the gun gods over it, and it still refuses to run. :cuss:

I just pretend it's a bolt action now, since it's dead on accurate out to 100 yds, and it fits me a little better than the 10/22 Carbine (long arms).

Usually shoot 50 or 100 rounds per session with either .45 ACP or S&W M629 .44. My shooting program is to fire 50 rounds on one target, score it, and record the scores to track improvement (hopefully). At age 66, muscle fatigue and eyestrain begin to impair accuracy after 50 or 100 rounds. I usually stop shooting when shots begin hitting outside the 10/9 rings. To continue shooting under these conditions would only reinforce bad habits.

Good shooting and be safe.

do you fire every single round you brought, or do you always bring more than you fire?
I guess I missed that question first time around. I never fire all the ammunition I bring to the range because I want to be able to load for the street before leaving the range.

All the best,
Glenn B

Don't shoot as often as I should. Definitely don't shoot as often as I'd like. When I go I will always take the CCWs and shoot them to the tune of at least 1 box each. Then I usually have something else with me, so it generally runs into the 100-200 category. If I've brought .22s, though, it can run into the thousands. :D
