Not sure if this is the right forum, if not I apologize. When I shoot (at this point i'm using rentals, which have an added cost) I basically only shoot fifty rounds or so and then I'm done. When i actually buy my own firearm, I really can't see shooting too many more than this each time I go to the range. On average, how many rounds do you shoot at each range session? Also what amount should I be shooting in order to be "up to spec" in case I need to use my gun in a non-range environment.

I go once a week to a range I can visit over my lunch hour, put 50 rds though a Glock 23, and head back to work.

I go at least once a week and shoot a hundred rounds.

I'm not a firearms expert, but I do know quite a bit about how people learn skills. Constant repetition does the trick. If someone goes to the range every day and shoots 25 rounds, they'll improve faster than if they go once a week and shoot 150 rounds. Of course, if they shoot 150 rounds every day they'll improve much faster still, go broke faster too.

Also, the old saying "Practice makes perfect." is only partially true. The truth is, perfect practice makes perfect. You don't want to practice bad habits, you do want to practice good shots.

I'd recommend getting some training for self defense, or at least getting some books about the subject. Marksmanship is only a fraction of self defense, mindset is much more important.

Hope that helps.

1. If it's just with the hunting rifles maybe 20.
2. If I bring my pistols and the Ruger 10-22.......500-1000
3. If it's shotguns 100-200
4. If I were going just to practice with my carry gun 50-100

I guess it depends on your purpose.

I only have a 92fs and I shoot about a 100 rounds each time I go. My ammo consumption and range time is very limited by my current budget. If I could afford it I would shoot several hundred rounds everyday.

Big bore handgun, usually about 100 rounds. Small bore handgun, usually about 200 rounds. If I bring both, it's probably about 100 each.

I don't do much rifle shooting yet.

If I take a .22 pistol and a .22 rifle I'll shoot a whole box, 550 rnds. Mostly at swingers and gongs.
9mm usually a box of WWB. Except 16 rnds I save to keep it loaded, it's my carry. Sometimes half a box.
Anything else, rifle or pistol, usually a box or two depending on how many are in a box, say on average 40 rnds on the rifles and 50 on the pistols.

Normally it's only the .22 and 9mm once a week. Nice outdoor range, never crowded.. usually. I'm a member so I can stay all day if I want and I only live a few minutes away. :neener:

150- 200 rounds for the 45....

20-60 rounds for the carbine... (25 meter AQT- Thanks Fred!)

Totals are per week.

I got a reloading press and a 9mm to reduce costs...

Mini 30 gets @ 50 rounds, 30-06 somewhere @ 20, pistols average between 80 to 150 rounds.

I have to reload everything when I get home, so I typically bring more than I shoot so I can try different things.

20-50 depending on the amount of time i have, but the range is just a walk away from my back door and i can go almost any day that i am home

200rds a week handgun.
100rds a week ar/ak etc.

there have been times that i have shot 350-500rds in one range trip, but that is unusual, and normally only done to test a bew gun out and put it through it's paces and see if it will really run.

when i go to training there are times when upwards to 600rds a day are fired. a few days in a row.

Pistol 3 times a week, a hundred rounds at a time. Always with a specific training goal.

I visit the rifle range I shoot 60 or so rounds from my long rifle and 100-200 rounds through my carbine. Once again generally working on a specific technique or training goal. I try to goto the rifle range twice a month, but it's a 45 minute drive (but well worth it considering it's a 1,000 yard range).

I also try to attend 2-3 weeks of professional training a year. From various sources also, so I get exposed to various techniques.
