How much ammo do you keep on hand?

I consider 500 rounds my minimum for any particular caliber, prefer to have at least 1000 rounds on hand. Rimfire will consist of several bricks of whatever shoots best in each particular gun.
Calibers? .38 Spcl, .357 Mag., 45 ACP, 9mm Nato, .22 LR, 7.62x54R, 308 Win., 222 Remington, 223 Remington, plus 12 gauge & 410 gauge shotshells in multi-case quantities.

I am sure there are others who for various reasons will agree.

Enough to make a reporter dampen their didies, thinking I surely must have plans to storm and take out the local Piggly Wiggly grocery with such a large cache.

Ergo, "more than 50 rounds".

I'm using it as furniture holding up printers, books, shoes, etc

and that doesn't count what's in the garage.

more than 50. ;)

I have
Jap 6.5-20
7.62X54r-500
.45-500
.357 Sig-4000
9mm-250
.38 Sp-250
.223-1200
.22 WMR-1000
.22lr- 25,000

Not near enough!

Between 10 and 15K 22lr (hey I have 2 boys that shoot also)
200+ rounds of 9mm
100+ rounds of 30-06
100+ rounds of .308
100+ rounds of .38 spcl
200+ rounds of .22mag
100+ rounds of 12ga
100+ rounds of 16ga

I need to stock up on most everything.

MRIman, so *that's* where it all went. You hoarding @#$@#. :p

I just buy when I can get a good deal on things and I have the money. I didn't set out to stockpile any certain number.

Just out of curiousity, why do you guys stock pile so much ammo? What's the reason for having over 10k rounds stored in your house?

Not trying to start an arguement here. I'm a newb and its an honest question.

10k rounds of .22LR fits into a boot box. It's not really as much as you might think.
over time you pick up a case of something here, or a case of something there, or there's a good deal on something else over here.
Within a few years you turn around and well, it's everywhere.

Esp. with semi-auto's, just farting around you could go thru 200, 300 rounds (or more) without even trying in one range trip. A case of ammo doesn't really go that far.

you're only addicted when you have ammo for guns you haven't bought yet. :scrutiny:

I use 9MM and .40 cal. only for 2 carbines and one pistol, and since i reload I only keep on hand about 300 rds. each and make them up as needed.

the stockpiling is a way to hedge bets against thr rising prices of ammo, plus some calibers are not produced in the USA so surplus is the only way to buy and that usually means bulk

17HMR - 250rds vmax
22LR - 1k
223 - 1k hp
243 - 250rds sp
7.62x39 - 500rds hp
308 - 200 FMJ, 200 SP
410 - 100rds #6
20ga - 400rds #8, 50rds #4, 20rds buckshot
12ga - 500rds #9, 100rds #6, 50rds #4, 75rds 00buck, 50rds 1buck, 50rds slug
38sp - 300rds SP
9mm - 750rds FMJ, 250rds HP

Not as much as I would like. Wish now that I had stocked up when it was cheap.

I don't have a fixed amount of each caliber. In fact, I think I have at least a couple of guns I have no ammo for at all.

Best answer yet IMO.

As for me, I have none, because I'm waiting to buy the new microstamped/serial numbered ammo when it comes out. ;)

MRI, that is about $36,000-43,000 worth of ammunition. You could literally trade that in for a brand new mercedes.

I have a pretty nice stash, too.. but I didn't have the space or money for it back when it was REALLY cheap. Fortunately, I managed to get in when it was still relatively cheap. Not quite as impressive as yours, but it will be a long time before my guns cease to be viable.

Funder, if you are feeling ammo pains, reload. I'm currently working on an ultra cheap load for the 7.62x54R using bargain surplus powders. I don't have enough information yet but I hope to.

Fair enough if you don't want to tell us, but don't you think it's more than a little silly to put on the secret agent "I don't want to disclose that information" tone, when implying that you have a sizable stash of ammo?

The tinfoil is a bit strong in here. It's all in good fun, and if it comes to the .gov searching in your houses for ammo, I hardly think they're going to use a THR post as a reference for the amount to look at.

I apologize if that offends, and I don't mean it to, but the particular vibe I am picking up in those posts is more than a little paranoid.

Never enough. And I'm all out of red wine. AND bourbon. Books, I think I'm close to covered. Still need copies of Shotluck and C-Stories........
