How much ammo do you keep on hand?

I have about 4K, i'd guess. Mainly 22lr and centerfire rifle ammo.

I try to buy surplus when its plentiful and cheap. I bought a bit of the SA 7.62x51 when it was around $30 for a battle pack of 120 (and wish I'd bought more). Now I'm gathering 5.45 since it's the current deal.

Now, what I want to know is why people reply to a thread with "nonya bidniz" instead of just ignoring it?

Me...I'm loud and proud of my rights. :D

Over the past 20 yeas, the price of ammunition, both factory and surplus, has gone up with periods of time where certain calibers were unavailable. Even earlier, when I was young, ammunition was registered when you bought it. If you happen to enjoy shooting, especially odd military calibers, it just is smart to stockpile to a reasonable amount, ammunition. I use to just buy a couple of boxes each week or so, and while not burdensome, it does take a long time to accumulate. A better strategy is to stock up on the cheaper calibers to a preset goal and catch up on the others later. Thus, I have over 10K rounds, of centerfire, and plan ro end up withover 20K. Currently, 7.5 Swiss and 6.5 Swede is available, and so is 308 and 30-06 for Garands. I am going to supplement this with reloaded ammunition, as I can find reasonablt priced 300 WinMag brass.

40 S&W = 3000 target reloads, 250 premium JHP's
357 mag = 1500 target reloads, 100 premium JHP's
7.62x39 = 800 rounds, I'll be buying another case (1000 rds) before year's end.
22 LR = 2500 rounds
22 Mag = 900 rounds
38 special = 250 target reloads
12 gauge = 100 shells, 25 buckshot
30 Carbine = 600 rounds of Wolf FMJ

50-60,000 22LR
30,000 5.56
8,000 7.62x51

1,000 other misc calibers (22 hornet, 260, 7mm-08, etc)

about 2,000 38/357
3,000 9mm
5,000 40 S&W

2,000 12ga slug and buckshot.

Just out of curiousity, why do you guys stock pile so much ammo? What's the reason for having over 10k rounds stored in your house?

Not trying to start an arguement here. I'm a newb and its an honest question.
A very valid question. I purchased my first guns back in 2001 when I was just 21 years old. I had two pistols. When 9/11 came around I went out and got myself about 200 rounds of 9mm Winchester JHP. I thought that was a friggen stupid huge amount of ammo to have on hand at the time.

Today I've got 12-15k rounds in my basement. When I sold my car a little over two years ago my brother and I "found" about 1,000 rounds of various calibers in it.

Here's how it happens: I own about 30-something firearms now. I guess I've got about 15 different types of ammo that they all shoot. It might be close to 20 actually. Eventually you get sick of making a run to the gun store to buy a box of ammo every time you want to shoot, so you start buying by the case. So, instead of buying 50 rounds of 9mm every month for practice you admit to yourself that sticking 1,000 rounds at a time in your basement is a better deal.

When you're halfway through that, and you find a killer deal at the local shop (like when I found Remington 9mm for $7 a box just 6 months ago) you snag another case.

Now, if you're shooting 15-20 different calibers you can see how this tends to add up.

I'm pretty much a card carrying member of the Tinfoil Hat Brigade, but that's NOT why I have so much ammo on hand. It sorta happened by accident. A case here of this, a case of that, a good deal on a caliber you like but haven't actually been shooting much and BLAM! You've now got more ammo than your local gun shop has on its shelves.

When you shoot long enough it just becomes a part of the household stores, not unlike salt or sugar in the kitchen. I sure as heck don't run out and buy a bag of flour every time a recipe calls for it. Likewise, I don't want to have to make a stop at the local gun store any time I want to go shooting.

Some of you fellers must get quite a chuckle out of the news reports of so an so being found with a stockpile of 1000 rounds of ammunition.:D

Simple economics for me; none of the paranoid, tin-foil hat, black helicopter stuff.

I shoot a lot, not as much as some on here, but a lot. It is not uncommon to consume 1000 rounds on a Saturday.

With the consumption rate, it just seems prudent to have a couple of days worth of ammo on hand. I reload much of my own stuff as well, and it is just more convenient for me to run large batches once the dies are set up.

And, a large supply of ammo and components does tend to buffer the ever increasing cost of ammo a bit.

Have a great day!

It seem rather odd that people are so willing to tell others how many firearms/rounds they have. That seems to have a giant sign in my yard saying "oh, please, when the SHTF, come to my place, kill me and load up!". I am just paranoid?

Never less than 1000 rounds of any caliber I shoot on regular basis.

Well, given the firearms and ammo, the "kill me" part may not be so easy :) Seriously, I don't worry about SHTF that much, and if the government is coming for my ammo things will already gone to hell in in a handbasket.

I have a spreadsheet at home with the exact figures, but I have just short of 8,000 rounds spread among 9mm, 5.56mm, 7.62x39mm, 5.7x28mm and a little .30 M1.

I buy in bulk because it saves me a lot, even at my reduced shooting rate of 5,000 or so rounds a year. Buy that in 50 box lots and it adds up fast!

A couple years ago I was buying 100 rounds of 9mm for $10, now its like $18. In late 2006 I bought 5.56 for $.17 a round, now its twice that. I'm not sure that now is an ideal time to stock up and that the price won't be starting a downward trend but if you feel like you can speculate a bit you might be able to shoot a lot more for the same money.

I stopped buying semiautos because I can't afford to fuel them.
SKS it too much for me. I bought mosins, mausers.
and on accident, a cz52, but you can still find elcheapo for that,
and mostly i got it for SD, and learning how to shoot a pistol.

But ammo prices are getting ridiculous. gotta get some funds together and maybe reload or something. esp. 8x57mm

Um, how you gonna find me? A guy who calls himself the RifleGuy, in the Detroit Metro area, where there are just over a 2 million people. Really think you can find one guy?
Well, I guess if you listen for the sound of gun fire, you can kinda home in on me... :)
I don't think too many people on here have compromised their identity. You may have over-estimated the severity of the situation.
