How much ammo do you keep on hand?

I have maintained a 1,000 round stockpile for each weapon that I have for at least 20 years. I presently only have 32 surplus 50 cal ammo boxes full not counting the shotgun ammo that is stored as purchased in case lots. I do rotate the ammo and fire anywhere between 500 and a 1000 rounds per month. Very little ammo has been in storage over three years and if it has been it is shotgun 000 and slugs. The shortage of ammo will effect my future range time.

...I was just curious how much ammunition you rifle guys think is prudent to keep on hand.

Two totally different questions....

In finance it's said you should have enough money to sustain your needs for 9 months to a year, perhaps that same formula could be applied to ammo.

Hey Ratdrall, while some may have been offended, most understand your question. I have been hammered with some of my questions as well. What I have found on the site is that most people here will share their knowledge and there are some guys here who seem to know their stuff. The others that respond negatively are the ones who pretend to be in the know. I think the amount of ammo you should have on hand is relative to your income. If the US dollar should fall ammo will be a great bartering tool. If you have disposable cash I think ammo is a great investment.

best regeards.

currently in .4o which is the only handgun caliber that i use, i have 3000rds of wwb 180gr fmj, and 2400rds of 155gr lead round nose reloads on hand, and the ability to make many more thousand.

for rifle i have about 800rds of 5.56, but since i have been using the .22 coversion kit so much in my ar, i have a stock of it more so than the 5.56.

I currently am the proud owner of a whole 240 .223 and 100 9mm rounds. I wish I had more for the next time I got to the range, but such is life.
