1,000 rounds per gun would be ridiculous given the number of guns I own. Now 1,000 per caliber makes sense although I admit that I don't have that much for every caliber (I don't think I really need 1,000 rounds of 380 on hand).

The last time I tried to do an inventory I had about 22,000 rounds in 28 calibers.

I buy ammo when I can, most often not enough.
In the days of $.04 8mm ammo,I thought I did buy enough.
Years of shooting go by,and now i'm down to my last 10,000 rds. :neener:
Ammo is better then money in the bank.

More than the local authorities would probably like to know about. Powder quantities would likely also make them shudder. Need more.

That's kind of a loaded question for me. For some guns, I only have a couple of boxes (.38 sp or .357 mag, for instance). Then I have several k each of 7.62x39, 7.62x51, 5.56, 9mm, 45acp

The problem with your poll is you stated per gun. I have far to many 38 specials to have 1000 rnds per gun. You should have done it per caliber for a more accurate assessment.

"Hoarding" is a socialist concept -- the theory being that if you have more than you need ("need" being defined by the government) you're somehow cheating someone else out of his share.

I am good in some calibers like 9mm and lacking in .38spl and .357.Probably need to hit the reloading bench. In general I have enough to where my fiancee and my dad still understand but when I told my brother he kinda looked at me funny.

Some subtlety is called for.

Let me start off by saying I have no idea how many loaded rounds of ammo I have, or what exactly what component inventory is for reloading. I did sorta-kinda count up the primers earlier this year, and it was 50k< x < 60k. All that being said... Different strategies for different calibers and uses. I have > 3k .223 and .308, 7.62x39 ammo that's mil-spec or mil-surp. I have > 1k .30-'06 M2 ammo. Back when prices were much lower, I decided to quit reloading 9mm, since Blazer could be had for 3.84/box, and I stocked up a 2 or 3k at that time. (I'm now glad I didn't ditch all the 9mm brass:mad:) I have 100 < x < 1000 of serious S.D. ammo in .45ACP, 9mm, .38Spl, .44Spl, and .357M. I have taken a renewed interest in CASS, and so I'm loading and shooting a lot more .38's than I used to.

For hunting, or serious target work, I will have ~ 100 or so rounds handloaded in any of those calibers.

For rimfire, which for me means .22LR, I don't even know how many digits are in the number of cartridges I have. I'm pretty sure it's a 5 digit number, but I don't know what the first digit is.

How does an accumulation like this fit into the poll?

Looking Saxon Pig's post got me to thinking...
1 rimfire caliber
2 shotgun guages, but overwhelmingly just 12g
7 rifle calibers (.223, .30-30, .308, .30-'06, 7.62x39, 7.62x54R)
8 handgun calibers (9Mak, .380, 9mmP, .38Spl, .357M, .44Spl, .44M, .45ACP)
That would be....Lessee... carry the 1.... 18 calibers.

I try to keep 1000-2000 rounds per caliber. I don't really have room for that much more. Though I do have about 3000 rounds of that surplus 7.62x25

To have 1000's of rounds sounds like overkill but if you shoot on a regular basis it does not take long to run thru those numbers. I shoot between 200 and 400 rds each week. If you do a little division, 10,000 rds is not a big supply.

I reload most of my own, so it makes sense to load in bulk rather than to change setup for a dozen different calibers and only load a few boxes each.

For cartridges like 7.62x39 that I don't normally reload for, I tend to buy in volume. Several cases at a time and order more ahead of time before I run out. Some calibers I don't keep as much on hand for because they either don't get shot a lot, or don't fill much of a need in times of crisis. Maybe a box or two for them, or sometimes nothing.

I consider myself a semi-high volume shooter. I don't see how having a few thousand rounds stocked is considered a "long term supply". That's a few weeks at most for many of us.

.22 rimfire is what I stock the most of. I go through about 30-35,000 rounds of it a year, so it only makes sense to buy multiple cases when it's on sale.

I typically keep 500-1000 stocked for everything, and reorder when it's down to ~200 (I let the supply dip now and then).

I still chuckle at my co-worker who said:
"I told the fire department, if my house is ever on fire, flood the basement and run!"

For my pistols and ar all I will say is 1000+ with supplies to reload at least 10,000 more as needed. for my hunting rifles I only keep 100 - 200 on hand with enough bullets for a couple of hundred more. :)

Years back we had a brush fire at the other house and fire chief came up the hill to tell me that the fire was contained but that the storage shed was going to be a loss as the houses had to take priority. He hoped I did not have to much of value in it. When I told him his eyes bugged out and he ran out screaming into his radio. They saved it
