thought I would start a thread on this because of the ammo shortage and so many people hoarding ammo. my question is how much ammo should a person have in their stockpile? how much til it is considered hoarding?

Ill start with me...I have about...
2500 rounds or so of 22LR
500 rounds of 22mag
400 rounds of 38 special and 357mag combined
500-600 rounds of 12 gauge

of course I would like to have more but Im not going to pay the gouging prices

As much as I can store. It doesn't go bad, if stored properly, and the price is only going to go up. Buy it cheap. Stack it deep.

Many folks would consider you a hoarder....

in this little banana republic we have an ammunition limit of 200 rounds per calibre of rifle you own , you are not allowed to own more than one rifle of the same calibre , unless you get "dedicated sport shooting or hunting" status.
then you can keep a bit more

My ammo stock has taken quite a hit since I didn't stock up back when prices were normal and now I refuse to overpay (for the most part). It keeps me from being able to shoot as much as I want but then again even when it comes back in stock I am not going to wipe places out because then I would be contributing to the problem and perpetuating the cycle.

I'd say around:

200 rnds 45
500 rnds 9mm
600 rnds .22
200 12ga mixed types
600 5.56/.223
400 7.62x54r

Considering the reason for the 2a I don't believe any amount of accumulated ammo is hoarding. The right to keep and bear arms goes hand in hand with ammo. I don't want anyone telling me how many guns are too much and just the same I don't want anyone telling me how much ammo is too much.
Now if I had a lot of ammo in a caliber and and someone else didn't have much I would let them get what they needed before I bought. I don't believe in being greedy.

I like to have at least 1,000-2,000 rounds for every caliber. I'm currently sitting on about 17,000 loaded rounds and enough reloading supplies for another 2,000. Never have too much.

Really? After this last bout of panic, I'd consider his numbers bare minimums, at best. I am not planning to even slow down my buying until I have 2-3X that much. ;)

After Clinton got elected and the Omnibus Crime Bill came along I figured what I'd need for ten years and stocked up.

3000 rnds .22lr
200 rnds .30/06
500 rnds .357
1000 rnds .38
250 rnds 12 ga. #6 (no pheasants around)
100 rnds 12 ga slugs (for deer hunting)
25 rnds 00 buckshot

Carefully used that would last a long time and I don't think it foolish to keep a twenty-plus year supply in this world.

Currently 40 to 50 thousand .22 rimfire, everything else I reload for and have way more than enough components. Haven't purchased anything within the last 4/5 years. My whole stash was just purchased because suppliers had sales and the prices were excellent.

I done the same with motor oil.

Wish I'd had a way to store gas, lol.

I was not aware that one could hoard ammo or the components to make ammo:D

I have enough "stuff" on hand to make most politicians pee down both legs:evil:

Although considering that any more just owning a fire arm could cause that, that's not saying much.

That is like asking, how long does a loaf of bread last you?

Depends on how many sandwiches you eat and how often.

I have some calibers I have not shot in 30 years, don't need much of it do I?

I have haves some rifles I have never shot, box or 2 is enough.

Im approaching my goal of 5k of each caliber used for general range fodder and 1500 for lesser shot or ccw calibers which gives me a solid years worth of shooting. Then I like to have a years worth of primers and powder on hand. ive been able to go out and shoot my 5 boxes every week during this panic without any worry or cost.

Way back when Clinton first got elected I started keeping a good stock of ammo around. Every time a Democrat gets into the white house there's a run on ammo and reloading components. Within the last year or so the situation has gotten lots of folks into stockpiling stuff and I can't blame them. I've been doing it for over 20 years now. The ammo has become part of my investment portfolio because whatever I don't shoot I can sell for more than I paid a few years back. Ammo never really goes down in fair value (not gouger value) and I didn't buy it for resale but someday if I want to dispose of some of it that I haven't shot then I'm sure I won't lose any money on the deal. Most calibers I reload and I'm pretty good in that department; the 22 LR stuff I write the purchase date on each brick and use the oldest stuff first. A couple years ago I got what is probably a lifetime supply (for me), of 7.62x39 steel case Russian stuff and if there's any left when I move to the nursing home it will get sold for probably a modest profit without resorting to gougery. Or if I croak before then my son can sell it and keep the $$$.

I started keeping a certain amount of ammo since 2008. Like others have said buy it cheap and buy plenty. When these little hiccups in the supply chain happen you will be thinking what shortage?

Have for what?

Depends a lot on if you shoot it, or perch yourself upon it like you're Smaug the dragon.

I shoot it. I shoot more than most. So my inventory of components will be more than most.

I have about 500 rounds of .223 and 9mm in storage for if I need it, but I shoot about 700-1,000 of each caliber per month in competition.

.22 LR I have about 1,000 rounds, but with school I don't shoot it much so that is plenty for me.

I reload .308, .30-06 and .243 and have components for each, but I just load them when I need them.
