With the hoarding ammo threads and how much do you have threads I was wondering how much is alot? Is it based on caliber? number of guns? amount of shooting? For example say I have guns in eight different calibers .22, 9mm .38, .357, .45, .308, .223 & .30-06 and I have a total of 26,000 rounds 5,000 .22, 3,000 of all the others. is that alot? is 3,000 rounds of a caliber regularly shot alot of ammo?

Alot is in proportion to your needs.

I don't understand the point of the question????
('I' do not consider 5K of .22 or 3k of others alot.)

Nomad is right, it depends on YOUR needs.

I try to have ~10K rounds per gun (10K for handguns+rifles, less for shotguns, more for 22s.) I'd consider 20K rounds per gun to be alot.

When "AmmoMan" or "Cheaper Than Dirt" runs low on some calibre, they call you to restock them.

Then maybe, just MAYBE, you have 'a lot of ammo'

Foghornl, that's funny! I needed a good chuckle today.

To me "A LOT" depends on how often and how much you shoot. If you shoot up 300-400 rounds per session per week, I personally don't consider 3,000 rounds a lot. But if you seldom shoot, that is a lot of ammo.

Many hunters will have a couple of boxes of their favorite deer caliber on hand. Shoot a little prior to opening day to check that the rifle is sighted in, then hit the woods. Having more than a 4-5 boxes of, say 30-06, would be a lot for them as it is probably a 5 year supply. I essentially do that with my 270. But shoot considerably more 22 and handgun ammo. Of late, I haven't even been taking the 270 out. Been using a revolver as my primary.

As stated, I think it depends on each person's circumstances. For me living in South Florida where there aren't really any ranges where you can bring your own ammo and since we lost the luxury many years ago of just going out west and shooting all day, I am sure my needs are much different than those in other more rural areas (yes I am jealous of all you guys that live in the country). I have more handgun ammo than anything else but not sure why. I don't stock up tens of thousands of rounds of ammo as I don't care about TEOTWAWKI and SHTF hoopla.
Right now I would think 2k of .45, 2k of .40, 250 of .380, 200 12 gauge, 100 30-30, 100 30/06 and 5k .22 is not a lot but sufficient to last me a while in case the prices go so high it gets ridiculous.

Like has been said before, it all depends on your usage. 100 rounds of .223 is a lot for me, cuz 1 20-round box will last me a couple years of hunting. If I had an AR though, I would need to get a LOT more ammo, because 100-rounds will go pretty quickly in one. On the other hand, I usually stock a couple thousand .22 shells, because when we use our .22's, it's not unusual to use 500 rounds a day.

more than a year supply.

for me, 5000 rnds of 223 is not a lot. 200 rnds of .480ruger is a lot

I like to have a one year supply of ammo relative to what I shoot. I buy when I find bargains and so not everything is always up to date and some calibers are well in excess of a 1 year's supply...just depending on what I find on sale.

For me, 3000 rounds isn't a lot, unless it is .50 BMG

It depends on the caliber

For 30-06 for my hunting rifle, 1000 rounds is a lot. For my 12Ga 1000 rounds is a lot. For the calibers that I shoot a lot… well say .223 (5.56)… Then, oh maybe 10,000 rounds is a lot. I don’t really know. When my ammo cans cannot contain the amount of ammo that I have on hand, then its time do a lot more target practice. My “ammo flow” has been positive lately. I have been buying more than I have been shooting, mostly due to lack of time. :(

Mymonie:

Well, gold will have some value at first --as I said, in the eye of the holder and beholder.

You want some around as part of a diversified SHTF portfolio.

Just for those who would twirl their moustaches in glee at trading an ounce of gold for a case of baby formula.

And I would twirl my moustache, too.

The extra ammo is for when he decides he wants the baby formula back.

--------
(STAGE WHISPER): Funny thing about gold in today's so-called economy is that people say, "Well gold is up to $600 an ounce."

No. The dollar is down to 1/600th of an ounce of gold.

Thank you, Federal Reserve System. It's all promises, promises, now.

edit: Whoops! Wrong thread.

Like has been said, it depends on the person.

For someone that hasn't shot their old 38 in 25 years, two boxes of 38's is a lot.

For someone that has their own home range and a hundred guns, 10,000 rounds per caliber isn't a lot.

Here's my formula:

(Age + number of guns you own) * your weight = minimum number of rounds you should have on hand.

Takes into account your maturity and wealth (# guns + how fat you are getting) to calculate minimum number of rounds you should be able to afford.

Mine calculates to 13,455 rounds, which is about how many rounds I have at home ;)

If I had my way I'd keep about 1k rounds of each caliber I need.
Reality is I try to keep 200-400 rounds per firearm on hand.

My wife thinks that's a lot of ammo. I'm always surprised at how fast I go through it just range plinking.

I'd think "a lot" would be defined as whatever amount makes your local ATF people go "Woah" in that Keanu Reeves way. Anything less than that is shameful. :D

I don't think a lot is relative.
I just think some people need, want, can afford, or use a LOT of ammo!

Good for them!
IMHO a lot of ammo is 1k rounds (per caliber)

I think about 1K rounds is "sufficient per firearm, however there are those moments when you run across a deal you can't pass up, hence I have about 8k of 9x19 laying around.
