How Much Ammunition is needed?

I have an adequate supply of commercial ammunition and reloading components that meet my requirements.

Sure, I have factory ammo that I purchased on sale or rebate. I don't shoot that stuff much.
I feel spoiled being a reloader.
I reload in batches. When I get down to about 200 loaded rounds of 9mm or a box of 30-30, I'll setup the press and make more with the components I have already stocked up on. I melt and cast lead a couple days in the spring/fall and make more than enough bullets for the year. I'll powder coat another day. I'll size them another day. Deprime brass one day. Clean brass another day. Reload them whenever I need some. It's just a big pipeline. I treat is as a hobby where there is always something to do if I want.
A bonus to this process is that almost everything is tradeable or saleable. I have very little actual reloaded ammunition in stock.

I will make the news with my 22LR stash. I have a few Bucket of Bullets and a number of bricks stocked because I don't reload them. It doesn't take many Value Packs of 500 to add up to 'click bait' headline levels.

A range friend just Bought 3,000 rds. of my 9x19 ammo (not used often)..

to allow my (online) purchase of 1,500 rds. of .308, found via Ammoseek.

This will add to the 1,000 rds. of .308 which is already here, or already shipping. The new PTR-91 (HK-91 clone) is so fun to shoot, and has excellent iron sights.
Rifle shooting, for me, is more than twice as fun as handguns, and this somewhat parallels the price difference between 9mm and .308.

I echo the sentiments of the original poster. My circumstances are similar. I have a few “modern” guns and …ahem… a pile, of old relics. These range from 1950s-1700s.

I buy modern .32 ammo when I find it and it’s affordable, to shoot recreationally. I have ~20 boxes at last count. So, plenty for range trips, in one sense. But, not nearly enough at the same time. It’s amazing how shooting a few pistols a couple of times will deplete that stash. (My usual expenditure is about 100 rounds and I have around a half dozen guns in that caliber.)

Of course, there are always guns you find you really like shooting and guns that are cool but you are happy to have shot them once and that’s that. I only make a point to keep the minimum 2 boxes for those.

I try to have at least 2 boxes for each gun, with the idea that I can shoot one if I want and still have one box for emergencies. Even though I have a lot of “collector” pieces, I still feel that a gun is useless without ammo, so I do try to have at least some for each gun. The extra or stockpile is for guns that are actually fun to shoot or make for good range guns. This is tricky for old stuff and means reloading is a necessity.

I do relax my “rule” for some of the black powder calibers though. The fact is, I have a bunch of guns, by the average person’s reckoning. (By gun nut standards I’m probably a solid amateur but I do have plenty.) If I need a gun personally for utility or self defense I’ve got modern ones for the task with plenty of ammo. Ammo for these is also readily obtainable and reasonably priced. But if I NEED that single shot black powder rifle…… My rationale is, if the circumstances are so dire that I truly “need” to use a black powder rifle, then I’m probably using my guns to arm friends and neighbors in some kind of crisis scenario. And if that’s the case, and they actually have to use them, they’ll be at a severe disadvantage, maybe even a fatal one, compared to the guy next to them who has a smokeless powder gun. As such, the appearance of the gun will do enough, and frankly, if things are that bad, they’re probably better off trusting to the guys with smokeless and spending their effort praying, anyway. So I don’t worry overmuch about keeping a healthy stockpile of .577 Snider or .41 Swiss.

I've stocked up for over 20+ years. I have never been caught needing/wanting. When Sandy Hook happened. It was bad if you wanted 22. Trump gets in and the windows of the ammo heavens opened like a flood gate. That was the time to really buy ammo and reloading components. COVID hits 2020, by June the ammo and components are all dried up.
Or you pay $80 for 22 / $45 for a box of 9mm, and primers/powder take off at $200+ for 1000. or $65 for 1lb of powder.
I reload so I am good. My .22 stash will see me through for 2 generations.
Remember. "Only God and the Gunner know".

How Much Ammunition is needed?

I guess as much as one plans to shoot. So my thinking as to how much? I guess enough. Obviously my enough and the enough of another are not likely to be the same. :)
