My primary hunting rifle, a Mauser K98 rebarrel .280 Rem old style Shilen 22" "medium" contour, Richards thumbhole claro walnut stock, Burris FF2 3x9, Leupold steel mounts, minimalist M1907 sling and uncle mikes swivels, 5 rounds of ammo tipped the scales at 10.3lbs. I'm totally fine with this. This rifle is mostly for stationary hunting, and I'm a pretty big guy. A lighter rifle feels "whippy" to me, and much of my shooting on whitetails in broken woods tends to be from poorly supported positions, I deliberately chose a heavy, well balanced rifle to suit my needs. The weight, balance, and thumbhole grip combine for a very stable shooting platform under such conditions. Feels just like touching off slow fire standing in a CMP match with the M1 when I draw down on a deer.
When I do go brush stomping, I reach for a mosin carbine. It is still relatively heavy, but significantly shorter. It's disassembled right now in need of a scope base repair, so I can't scale it. My other brush gun is a Ruger Blackhawk, so no weight concerns there..
