Hi all, I am in the process of moving to Alaska, and I was hoping to get some input from any folks that might already be living in the Fairbanks area about ammo prices.
Is the local WalMart still the cheapest around, and do they carry the same types of ammo as the lower 48? I am thinking specifically of the Hornady .17HMR, and RWS 9mm. What are average prices for 9mm, .223, .22, and .17HMR? Everything else I reload, but I am wondering if I should seriously stock up on these calibers before I go.
Thanks to any and all who can give me a little insight here.
Joel

Depends on what walmart is out of, and how much the LGS have marked it up, it's a little more, but not that bad, unless you are in the bush...

I lived in Fairbanks last year. Ammo was pretty much nonexistent. I lived in Anchorage this past winter and it was a little better. Prices were definately higher. The biggest down side for me was finding relatively inexpensive practice ammo and reloading components. Finding powder and primers was touch and go for a while. I hope the situation has improved lately. Stocking up on ammo before you go may or may not be an option depending on how you get there, but definately use every opportunity you can to stock up on ammo in the lower 48, as long as you can get it up there.

Alaska went through the same ammo shortage as everyone else, but it's becoming available again. Ammo is more expensive, but not that much more. I think Wal-Mart has the same prices nationwide, so it would be the best place to look. The last time I went to Wal-Mart (about a week ago), at least 3/4ths of the various ammo slots were filled.

Forget shipping it yourself, the price makes it prohibitive. And forget carrying it up, because you have to go through Canada. But really, the rounds you named are all common and plentiful, especially in a bigger town like Fairbanks.

Thanks guys, that is the type of info I was looking for, and it seems that I am not going to have to look to hard to find what I need. Good times will be had...

Leaving fbnks now, return to texas (not my choice) 9mm at walmart in Tx is $10. 40 cal is $14 and 45 $16. Sportsmans warehouse in alaska for range fodder, 9mm $17. 45 was around $30. Now this is as best I can remember from seeing a week ago. I nearly vomited at the price of everything. Been away from here too long and forgot.

There is plenty of ammo up here, now. Prices reflect shipping and higher
business costs, think 10 to 20 percent higher. Are you contemplating
bringing ammo up here ? Max is 11 pounds per adult when flying.
Driving through our friendly neighbor Canada is pretty much a NO.
Moving companies will not do ammo. I can get specific prices in a few days.

You are 3 month too late, brother. Unless you are coming for the moose. In which case you better haul ass!

No $14 bulk packs, never seen RWS at WM (GunRunners in Anchorage might have some), HMR is hit and miss. 9mm is cheapest in 50 round boxes, about $18-25. 5.56 is about .40-.50/round for American brass. .22 is $20-30/brick. Primers and powder in Anchorage are doing fine; don't know about FAI). Bullets are available, but mostly small count boxes for hunting or accuracy type reloading; if you want 5000 bulk bullets you'll probably want to order and get shipped up USPS Flat Rate.

Understand that WalMart in Alaska doesn't have the same ammo deals because they don't have the same WM distribution network up here. My understanding (from a fairly knowledgeable employee who works the WM gun counter and confirmed by a clerk at another WM) is that the ammo is from a local distributor, not the normal WM supply chain. This means WM retail prices are local AK distributor plus markup, not manufacturer to WM contract pricing as in the L48. In Anchorage at least, my favorite FLGSs have as good and often better prices.

Ammo has to be barged up by the pallet load or more to make it worthwhile (price-wise). The distributor brings it up by the container-load, I'm sure. But when they run out of something, WalMart (and many of the stores in Alaska) run out as well, and don't get restocked until the distributor has another shipment come up.

Standard calibers in general are easy to buy, but if you're wrapped around a specific load, bullet, or foreign maker, you may be out of luck. No Garrett or Georgia Arms, no Black Hills that I've seen, and a poor selection of Cor-Bon. If the local distributor doesn't already stock the specific load you want, it has been hard to get it brought up.

Surplus and Wolf/Tula/Yugo/etc. ammo is expensive. Whatever J&G or AIM sells for, add 50-100% to buy from your FLGS. Or order a pallet and pay barge shipping from Tacoma (then truck to FAI). You can save, but have to fork out a huge wad of cash up front. AMGA.net has group buys at irregular intervals.

For non-ammo/primer purchases, please support your FLGS. That said, USPS Flat Rate Priority Boxes are your best mail-order/internet friends. Choose your sources based on how they ship and the cost of shipping. There is Alaska knowledge scattered here on THR and good info and contacts on the big black rifle site under Hometown/Alaska & Hawaii, and a few good Alaska sites as well.

Buy a new battery for your vehicle if it is more than a few years old. Get a block heater and a battery heater put in. Carry jumper cables in your car. Get an auto-start. Check your coolant protection (negative degrees). Big Ray's sells Carhartts. Fur hats are warm. Make a point of getting outside during the daylight, every day. You can't get to your CCW that is under your coat. Don't rent a dry cabin your first winter. Heating any house in FAI is more expensive than you budget for. Don't do stupid stuff or you will die, and we will split up your gear.

Dude, you have to hit up all 3 walmarts to see what is in, and the valley has more for some reason, it isn't bad, if you can get the ammo shipped (which I can :neener:) just it is VERY expensive for what one person can afford, I brought up about 120# of ammo, and paid $100, the minimum freight (barge) charge from bellingham. So I figure if someone wants to share shipping, I'm game, until then I stick with 115grn PMC 9 (11.50 iv walmart has it) and 165 grn 40 in the bulk packs when wally world has it in.

9mm plinking ammo (Independence) was $12.99 for a box of 50 last time I bought 1000 rnds. .223 was $7 something for a box of 20. 375 H&H Federal premium with Barnes triple x bullets $77.change a box. Ammo is what it is. My thought is ya make twice the money up here some things cost a little more, your still further ahead. this was at sportsmans whse. walmart sucks.
