I'm facinated by these guns and I don't know why. I've never even seen one in real life. I just think they're beautiful and I really like the 7.62x54r round.

Does anyone own one and how much should I expect to pay if I ever wanted one?

Oh man that rifle is beautiful.

I'm not looking right now though. Thanks anyway. I'm just day dreaming of "someday". Hey also, is that considered a pistol grip? Because if it is, it's illegal in my state because it also has a detachable magazine. That would make me really sad haha.

Your Choices are:

A) Buy a real Dragunov for $5-10,000 if you can find one.

B) Buy a Tigr which is a made for export Drag (no longer imported because of ban on certain 'non-sporting Russian arms':barf: :fire: ), expect to pay $1,500 (handled one a month ago at one of my fav gun stores).

C) Buy a Romanian Drag want-a-be Romak:barf: . This is a streached AK that vaguely looks like a Dragunov and uses 7.62 X 54R ammo, expect to pay $500-$700 dollars on this fake.

Don't forget about the NDM-86 in 54R. IMO it is closer to an SVD than a Tiger ever will be. I have one in 308 and absolutly love it.

Here is a price listing from Dragunov.net. That site has everything you'll ever want to know about drags.

Russian SVD: $3500 - $6000 depending on condition and accessories.
Russian Tiger carbine: $1300 - $1800 also depending on condition and accessories (add $1000 to price if California Armory version).
Chinese NDM-86: $2200 - $3200 if in 7.62x54 and $1800 - $2400 if 7.62x51. Add a premium if in deluxe velvet case.
Romanian PSL (ROMAK-3/SSG-97/ FPK): $700 - $900

if SVDs are going for so much then how come there haven't been russian parts kit guns with us receivers and such?

Because they are still in active military service and havent been surplused off yet. Even if they were, Russia has an agreement with the US not to ship in any SVD parts or completed firearms.

Gun Wielding Maniac Because they are still in active military service and havent been surplused off yet. Even if they were, Russia has an agreement with the US not to ship in any SVD parts or completed firearms. are not true SVDs but merely look that way and use an ak47 based system.

Russia's fireamrs used to be banned due to the ban of import from comblock countries. Then we had the ban of from 1986 that banned the import of rifles with features such as bayonets and mounts, large detachable magazines, night sights and so on that were considered military and a bunch of other antigun laws that became popular during the Reagon and Bush administrations.

Russia's agreement came about in 1996 that is they would not allow the export of certain firearms and such to the US and other countries that they would be removed from the banned country list and allowed them to sell other arms to the US, so it did allow for some Russian stuff to come through hence why we see all the Mosins, Russian captured Mausers, Saigas etc on to the market.

Theres only a handful of real SVDs in the country that were let in by the importer and a few hundred Chinese clones that got in before they were banned from import. The Chinese imports were banned after the Tiananmen Square protests. Of course it probrobly has more to do that Chinese firearms at the time accounted for over half of firearms being imported into the US and well over a third of all sales and the US firearm manufacturers were really bitching about it.

I always wanted a true Dragunove, but the budget doesn't allow it.... So I was thinking of buying a Romak.. Until I handled the Romaks, at a gun show, and believe they are NOTHING like a true Dragunov. Very cheaply made, and nothing like a true Dragunov. I suspect that if you buy one, you'll be very disapointed.

dfaugh - You need to do a little bit more looking before you leap. ROMAK/PSL/FPK's are NOT cheaply made Dragunov clones. In fact, they are not clones of Drag's at all, but rather Kalashnikov's beefed up for DMR status; it is only American distributors who have perpetuated the myth the PSL's are supposed to be Drag's.

Also, many fellow THR's can attest to the quality of PSL's- with average surplus ammo, a decent chooter can pull 3 MOA, and with hand loaded or match grade ammo, 1.5 MOA or better.

Also, PSL's are in military service all over the world. There have been at least a few US deaths confirmed from PSL shots in Iraq. The Romanian military uses the PSL commonly at the squad level as a DM rifle currently and is very happy with it (my ex was Romanian and her father was in the military).

I had a Russian SVD a few years back I lucked out and payed only $2500 for it, then sold it last year for $3500.(I could of gotten more for it, but the guy I sold it too was someone i met at the range, and shoot with occationally, he loves it, and I get more gratification knowing he appreciates the rifle then selling it to someone who might not for more) I too thought dragunovs were cool....until I got one then did the research. The romanian isnt really a dragunov, and the Tigr is more of a look alike than anything else, only a few shipped over had flash suppressors, and the stock is different from the military one. The real SVD has an adjustable gas system, military stock and bayonet lug, flash suppressor and longer barrel to name a few differences betwen the SVD and tigr. Even so, the SVD isnt really a sniper rifle, it wasnt made to be one. It was made to be a designated marksman rifle, to extend the range of the squad. Kind of like how our military still uses M14's in this way. Even with quality ammo I couldnt get it to group within an Inch at 100 yards bench rested on a SVD bipod it averaged around 2". I have shot other rifles that I can get 1" groups or better with. Though it always would turn heads at the range. Dont get me wrong, I think its a fun rifle, and gets everyones attention. In my opinion owners of real Dragunov SVD's over glorify them because of the high pricetag they carry. Do the research, they are great rifles, but for the price you could get something more accurate.
