It depends. I will clean it every range trip. If I shoot more then 500 rounds in a day I will stop scrub the barrel. Takes 5 minutes, well worth it IMHO.

The action gets cleaned once every few months.

Its the same with my other guns. If a bullet goes down the barrel it gets cleaned and function checked. If I haven't shot a gun for a while, I will clean again to make sure everything is lubed and working right. I seldom have reliability issues with my firearms and I attribute this to proper cleaning and buying good guns.

The 10/22 gets cleaned about every 3rd or 4th outing.

The Savage finally got it's first cleaning after about a year of it being in the field/truck with me(only a few hundred rounds).

After every trip to the range I use a hair paint brush on the receiver to remove any debris picked up during the days shooting. I squirt a little solvent down the barrel and a couple of passes with a boresnake. And last a wipedown of the exterior. I am sure I could get by with less, but then I have never had one fail to function. I consider this to be normal upkeep.:)

I rarely cleaned my .22 bores until some genious invented the boresnake; now it is too easy not to. I do believe that you can do more harm than good cleaning most auto-loading small-bore rifles w/ a steel rod as you must go through the muzzle & risk crown damage with a careless angle of appoach. Now, I pour a little Hopp's #9 into the bore, wait 60 seconds (holding in the solvent with a finger plugging the breech) & then make several passes with the snake. Bore looks bright & crisp even without any real brushing. (lubed ammo really limits fouling).

I clean after every use, but I shoot about 300-600 rounds a trip. Also I don't shoot all that often; about once a month. I think that if I shot more often I'd get lax in my cleaning routine.
