How pro 2A is Colorado?

I used to live in Douglas County, south of Denver. I lived there for several years but my company moved me as well. I say move there. It is wonderful, and still very gun friendly. Go for it! Oh yeah, buy a Jeep Wrangler and head into the mountains!

just had that discussion at dinner, my wife is worried about her car faring well. Im just running with it so I can keep my truck and get a wrangler out of the deal

Thank you for the dove invite, that is very generous of you. If things work out I will absolutely take you up on that

What is the general attitude toward the 2A in Denver? Not great. I did a 2 year stint on the outskirts of Denver. I wouldn't think of living there ever again (my own opinion)! There are a lot of conservative folks that live in the Denver area, unfortunately most of them are not the legislative type and don't have much of an influence on the local politics. When I was there I found out that a CCW permit puts you in an undistinguished category of "person of interest" when being pulled over. This category also includes felons, etc. They said it resulted in a guns drawn type of situation when being pulled over. I never bothered to get my permit when there for that reason. Outside of the metro area they are very gun friendly.

Colorado is very gun friendly overall, though Denver is about as described above in terms of culture… that changes, too, as you go toward the suburbs where most of us live With that said, I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted for open carry in Denver, even thought it is technically prohibited (and I am very familiar with what is and isn't typically done in the criminal justice system in Denver).

Your CCW permit carries more authority here in Colorado than it does in most states, and our CCW law is even stronger than the CCW law in Texas. You may also carry loaded/concealed in a vehicle, with or without a CCW permit. Modern sporting rifles are fully legal, and the BS magazine limit is unenforceable and almost entirely ignored (I've even seen the magazines for sale on store shelves this year, despite being two years into that law).

I don't believe that's true at all. CBI used to produce a hit that told us in law enforcement when someone had a CCW permit, but I don't know of any instances where people had guns drawn on them because of that hit alone (the internet is usually long on stories, and short on facts in that regard — I have seen the rumor before). Anyway, that line item was removed from clearances some years ago, so officers in this state no longer receive CCW notifications when they run your name on a traffic stop. Furthermore, Colorado is one of the few states where you are NOT legally required to report the fact that you are CCW'ing when you're stopped on a traffic violation (I still recommend doing so, but it isn't required).

As stated above, outside of Boulder and Denver you are GTG. They even have a town named Rifle!!

And <tee-hee> a town named "GUNisson."

I don't believe that *ALL* Sheriffs stated that. So be aware and be careful. Our state is on a very slippery slope downhill towards looking more and more like California...

And, no tee-hee, that is a fact. Colorado is widely recognized as a "purple" state which can go either way on conservative versus "liberal" issues --that is "red" versus "blue."

The main problems involve transplants* from so-called "liberal" states who strive to make Colorado more like their old home and the other is (as usual) the preponderance of power exerted by the urban and liberal college centers (read "Boulder") over the rest of the State.

Nevertheless, there seems to be a growing sense of outrage among those who "just want to be left alone" and who are just beginning to wake up to the danger of juggernaut sophisticated political "machines" which don't want to "just leave them alone."

This, as witnessed by the recent recall of several prominent do-gooders (meaning "I know what's best for you" types) in the State Legislature.

If that kind of effort --not just in terms of "recalls" --can be sustained, we might just, perhaps, see a shift back to a somewhat more "red" State.

Terry, 230RN

*I don't want to deal with the "transplants" from other countries.

My borther lives in Colorado Springs. Colorado in general is very pro 2A, but they high population pockets of blue that have disproportionate influence on state laws, like many other states where 90% of the state geography is pro gun, but a couple of major cities have +51% of the voters.

Another thing that has had an effect on many states is the flight and migration of people from blue states and establishing pockets in red states, bringing their anti gun politics with them. Colorado, Texas, Virginia, and Florida have all been influenced by blue state migration.

Blue state migration has been upped by legal marijuana .. don't mix ccw with that by the way.

when i moved there in the early 1970's the place was highly Conservative, i moved away in the late 1990's one reason was the place was becoming too liberal for me, my oldest son still live there and he tells me it has become so liberal there basically no room for Conservatives..., the new Marijuana laws should give you a clue to the political lean.

With the general exception of the front range megalopolis and specifically Denver, the rest of Colorado is pretty pro 2A. Paradoxically, a large reason the state gun laws are so good is in reaction to Denver being so draconian in the past. Some county sheriffs don't jibe with a dichotomy of 2A and ending the war on some drugs.

Sheriffs' have been ignoring the magazine law.
There is no way for them to enforce the magazine law as magazines are typically not dated. It was a stupid "feel good" laws promoted by carpet baggers that are now recalled, and out of office.

I live in CO and have no problems with my day to day gun living but I think it's foolish to act as though there are no teeth in the bad laws we have had set upon us.
First, some of the most popular magazines do have date stamps.
Second, there are new magazines and new guns coming out all the time that specifically date manufacturing.
Third, in the future there will be a generation who will be prohibited possession simply by their date of birth.
Forth, new residents (post enactment) would suffer under the new laws by their date of residency.
We now live in a time when the authorities don't care but if at some point they decide to enforce the law they have plenty of avenues to make otherwise innocent people criminals.
My point in all this is to continue to work to repeal and not be complacent because those in power now say they won't/can't enforce.

What you need to realize is that the state, as a whole, is pretty libertarian, hence the purple. The gun legislation we were saddled with 2 years ago was NOT passed by popular vote; it was done by the legislature in a manner that was not only hasty, but illegal (they didn't give everyone who wished to speak at public hearings an opportunity), and it is currently facing a lawsuit filed by the Independence Institute and the majority (91%) of county sheriffs in the state, as well as other plaintiffs. http://coloradoguncase.org/

The influx of liberals from both coasts has been painful, and has definitely made the state trend left more on social issues, but it's still quite gun friendly.

So if I move there (and Im really trying to BTW) anything I bring with me is "grandfathered" in?

Thanks for all the information thus far, you all have been really helpful with this and taking away some of my concerns. Seems like now all I need to figure out is if I can afford to buy a small chunk of land to build on. Be nice to shoot and hunt out my backdoor!
