I might have an opportunity to move up in my organization but it would require a move to Denver. After hearing about the recent magazine limit laws Im not so sure that they are headed in a positive direction. Maybe some residents could chime in for me as to where the state is headed and the general attitude towards 2A stuff. Im more of a hunter than a general shooter but dont want to move and then have to get rid of a bunch of hard earned equipment.

Also, whats the general attitude on concealed carry, firearms in the car & home, etc?

* I know this is somewhat of a general inquiry but would really like to get an idea of what the culture is near Denver.

Thanks

The gun culture is alive and well all over Colorado, except in the Denver and Boulder areas. Concealed carry is shall issue, and you can keep a concealed handgun in your car without any licenses (don't keep it in the glove compartment and forget it's in there when you get stopped though). Open carry is illegal in the City of Denver, although the City of Denver is a small part of the Denver Metro Area.

I wouldn't live in Denver on a bet, but Colorado overall is very gun friendly, and a large part of our tourist industry is centered on hunting.

The mag limit is unenforceable and therefore it is ignored by pretty much all law enforcement. Stay out of Denver or Boulder and you are fine. We have some of the best hunting, some great competition, and are very gun friendly. Outside of those two areas.

I did that once...had an interesting conversation with the officer about it.
Even without a permit; a loaded weapon may be "hidden" within a vehicle, and it "shall not be considered concealed", per colorado revised statutes.
And, you are not even legally bound to inform the officer of its presence, after initial contact with the officer.

As stated above, outside of Boulder and Denver you are GTG. They even have a town named Rifle!!

I was staying at my daughters place in west Denver and a neighbor was shooting squirrels with a 12 gauge. No cops showed up or anything. But yeah, like Minneapolis in my state the city and especially some suburbs are loaded with liberal idiots. Mostly transplant Nazi liberals. But this is an outsider opinion.

I believe violating a posted "No Guns" sign is a federal offense, but don't quote me.

Colorado does not, that I am aware of, have any specific rules governing "NO Guns" signs but does have rules regarding property owners rights... meaning if they catch you and ask you to leave or disarm you have to.

Also, the mag limit may be unenforceable if you already own the magazines but if you don't they're not available in stores.

I'd heard they were going to raise the mag limit to 30 rounds last summer but the local pro gun organization torpedoed the bill. I'm not sure why. Maybe there were other objectionable things in it or they were taking an all or nothing approach.

Thank you all for the insight and information. Sounds like if we decide to do it we should steer clear of Denver proper, luckily HQ is SW of there and on the outskirts.

Be really nice to find a few acres outside of town and build a little something cozy but not sure what costs would be. After a quick search it looks like it might be kind of an expensive place to live, however being able to shoot and hunt right outside your door is priceless

I'm in Teller County, a gun owning heaven. You should here the National Forest around here on a Saturday, people are lighting off rounds left and right for hours.

During the last Sheriff's election here, the candidate that won had a full page ad endorsement from the NRA, totally pro-gun Sheriff.

Concerning the idiotic magazine capacity law here, there so many obvious and easy ways around that, its pretty much a joke. Besides the fact that the county Sheriff's have publicly stated they won't enforce it.

My son lives in Westminster and we visit there regularly. I have in-laws in Conifer, and both say Denver is much like Austin, where my son moved from. He calls Austin the San Francisco of Texas. Home prices in the Denver area are just stupid ridiculous, and no signs of getting better.

Staying out of Denver and Boulder sounds like very good advice to me.

I don't believe that *ALL* Sheriffs stated that. So be aware and be careful. Our state is on a very slippery slope downhill towards looking more and more like California...

The gun shops in Larimer county are still selling "large capacity magazines" by removing a baseplate or some other component and calling it a "kit". The corporate places are not involved but most of the independent shops I visit do.

The gun activists were divided on that one, half saying they have a better chance of getting the politicians who drafted the bill to amend the ban to 30 rounds, which would then legalize 98% of the mags out there. The other half said if they settle on a 30 round limit, it will kill any chance of repealing it while more and more CA transplants are moving to CO and bringing CA idealism with them.

I've only casually followed the CO gun politics since MN likes to try and mimic other blue states.

When I bought my 9mm Walther PPX at a gun show, I recieved (2) 16 round magazines disassembled.....I was thrilled!

It took me all of 5 mintues to put them together. I didn't realize that was a "loophole", but its great!

As far as I know, there were only (2) county Sheriff's in the state that said they would enforce the magazine law, that would be the Denver area. Question is, how do they prove anything? There aren't any date stamps on the magazines.

I say move on in!!! The Anti's are counting on us leaving it all to them.
Get in and Vote!!! My Daughter just moved to Colorado.
We are already set on her voting attitude.
We should in fact act opposite to what we have done in the past.
When we are attacked we move out. We should in fact move in and take it back.
They are counting on our individualism and feelings of self interest. Using that against us.
They concentrate on strategy while we focus on tactics. bad move when playing the long game.

It all depends on if enough pro gun people will throw themselves on that proverbial grenade to outnumber the CA transplants. If crap laws were passed in my state I wouldn't move out just because of it, but I certainly have no interest in moving INTO a state that is passing crap laws.

Why picking on Boulder?

Boulder and Boulder County have no more restrictions than any other part of the state. I can carry everyday just like I lived in Colorado Springs. You may be surprised, but there is still a strong group of shooters up here.

Downtown Boulder is home to one of the best gun shops in the state- Gunsport Colorado.

I posted but my login expired... Doh! I'll pm my phone #. I moved recently from Texas (I'm a Dallas kid), so can fill you in. Maybe I'll repost from home tonight.

Its funny how a simple question brings so many people together. What I mean by that is, Im from MN but living in TX. Would really like to live in/near the mountains even if for a short while because eventually we will probably end back up in MN at some point in our lives.

And, I agree with some of the comments about getting more voices in a place that needs them. One more person to help convey the message that firearms are not the problem cant hurt.

I think my mind is pretty much made up, pending the logistics of course, and my wife is excited about the prospect as well. Now heres the million dollar question(s), whos willing to show me their secret elk, grouse, dove, white tail, mule deer, chukar, and trout spots?

We host a dove hunt on opening day every year. Mostly THR members and family. PM me next summer if you want an invite.

I haven't fished in a few years, but need to get back to it. I've got a few favorite streams, but really, there are hundreds of fine rivers and streams to fish here.

I am not a resident of Colorado, but I do own a cabin there. I have found most of Colorado to be very pro 2nd Amendment. I just wish that extended to Colorado General Assembly.

The only bummer I've found, other than the aforementioned mag capacity and universal background check laws, is the CBI background check for firearms purchases. The Colorado CHP really ought to exempt a purchaser from the background check like it does in a lot of other states.

In the summer of 2014, I traded firearms with a Colorado resident. He shipped mine, but I brought his to a local shop for the transfer. After the 4473 was done, it took almost half an hour on the phone with the CBI to get a "Proceed" for him, and supposedly that is / was typical. Maybe they have gotten better, but I have never seen a NICS check that took that long (not counting a "Delay" result, which was still way less time on the phone). I wish Colorado would go with NICS and allow their CHP to grant NICS Exempt status.
