I live in a bedroom community that's mostly military and/or people who moved in for the school district. We had our first officer involved shooting on record this week. The town is pretty darn safe for the most part.

My actual neighbor hood is lower income, but there are a lot of retired people scattered around and there are a lot of benign businesses (dentists offices and such). I know most of the people in my apartment complex, so I'm not too worried.

Can't say as much for some of my neighbors. I got some wide-eyed looks when I brought home my Mosin. :D

I voted in the 'pretty unsafe" section. I feel it waffles between average and pretty unsafe.

Occasionally I hear gun shots...besides New Years and July 4th. There are occasional home invasions...usually drug related. A carjacking last week at a local grocery. ect.ad nauseum. the list goes on.

I've managed to be left out of this, but, it is all around. Too often to ignore.

Mark.

I guess I feel pretty safe. I never lock my doors, I'm not even sure where the keys are. Locks don't stop entry into a home in a semi rural area like this, they just make sure anybody coming in has to break something to get in and thus cause more expense. I do have a pretty mean cat though.

There are two trucks parked outside, keys are in both. I don't want to be bothered trying to figure out which of the three potential drivers have the keys so they stay in the truck's ignition when at home.

Now if a person were to decide to come in while I'm home...they might come to regret that decision. ;)

I'm in the inner city, not the ugliest part but you can smell it from here. The neighborhood is practically overrun with Registered Sex Offenders, but the Gangstas are the worst of it. I pulled up next to a nice new SUV at an intersection yesterday, and there were seven 45-caliber holes in the passenger side. All the bad guys have cars, and they're constantly on the move. I carry a small 45acp with me at all times, and something with more firepower (and spare mags) if I'm out and about on foot. I nearly got carjacked a few months back, hence my decision to upgrade from a .380 to the 45. I practice a lot, and I pretty much live in Condition Yellow, as much as possible. If they're gonna take me out, they'd better get me with the first shot, or it's going to get really noisy! :what:

I voted pretty safe

I live in a subdivision of a city that has around 30,000 people. I do have some "less" than desirable neighbors, but that's why I carry a gun.

Very safe.

The only crimes that have happened in my village in the last 8 years (since I moved here) have been traffic stops where a joint or a little coke was found in the car, a few domesic disputes, and one instance of a person embezzling from their employer. The cops in the village are more or less revenue generators who have special DOT training for inspecting rigs, they used to pull over every rig that went throigh town and inspect them top to bottom, when they aren't doing that, they are working speed traps on the highway at the edge of town.

The people who live in my particular neighborhood all come from rural origins and have little or no use for the city (milwaukee and surrounding areas) that they work in. Most of the people int he neighborhood know eachother well and watch eachother's kids and the coming and going of vehicles/people who aren't from the neighborhood.

The only potential pitfall is that the village I live in is only about a 35-40 minute drive from the inner city of Milwaukee, meaning that the criminal elements are less than an hour's drive away if they wanted to hit people's homes while they're at work.

I'd say average, the biggest problem's the neighbor's teenage daughter throwing parties whenever Mom & Dad are out of town, and the ensuing hilarity of the fire department showing up for drunken injuries while she runs around trying to get them to turn off the lights and sirens so the other neighbors dont wake up. It makes for interesting mailbox conversations.

Now my brother lives about 4mi away, and he got to watch his neighbor's door being rammed in at 11pm by the swat team, plus several stabbings, shooting, and in general dealing of crack.. He's in a not-so-nice neighborhood.

My closest neighbors are at least a quarter mile away, the rest are over a mile away. I consider my "neighborhood" to be pretty safe. And I still sleep with a shotgun under the bed...

I can't really speak for the rest of my neighborhood but I know MY house is safe.

As my father says, "It's easy to get into my house but it's a lot harder to get back out."

My inner city neighborhood isn't the worst, but it isn't the best either. There have been at least three armed robberies within 10-12 blocks of my house in the last month. It will increase as the weather gets warmer. One of the main arteries near my house seems to be the scene of armed robberies during the summer months.

The safety of any neighborhood is only as good as the security of the road leading into it. Usually, even great neighborhoods have big wide open streets that lead straight over to where all the dirtbags hang out.

Know your neighbors. Be aware of your surroundings. Don't be afraid to get involved. When all else fails....move.

Whole world is unsafe. It's called life, and bad experiences happen to everyone -- just some places, life is a little darker than others.

My studio is intermediate between TallPine's and PapaJohn's.

My 'hood is different from most of yours.
It's in a commercial/industrial district.
During the day, it's teaming with activity,
including semis, delivery trucks, etc.

After 5 pm and on weekends,
it's just barren. You could hear a pin drop.

Of course, that tends to attract marginal people
looking to get out of the public eye
- we occasionally have sketchy types living in cars on the street -
which is, of course, why I'm well armed,
and make my presence known even at 3 am
by keeping a stereo on, taking breaks outside in the moonlight, etc.

My goal is to live in the woods far from here,
but even there is not really "safe" anymore.

My neighborhood's complicated, in that it's about 50% working class people, mostly young folks with families, about 25% University students and employees, and 25% straight-up ghetto.

Saturday evenings are all kinds of fun.

I feel pretty safe walking around, as long as I keep my eyes open. I've got redundant alarms in my apartment, and I've hardened the exterior as much as I can.

So far so good.

When I moved into my house in 1983 in was a pretty nice and safe blue collar type neighborhood. Then the gangbangers started moving in then the illegal immigrants started moving in. A newspaper article here about 6 months ago described the area I live in as having the highest crime rate in the state.
My house is paid for and I have no debt so I don't plan on moving unless a really good deal turns up but I will not go into debt again period.
I haven't had any problems here to speak of which is good--if a BG feels the need to do something here--I will make it a point to ruin his day

There is no such thing as a safe neighborhood. Criminals can walk or ride into any "very safe" neighborhood and make it very unsafe. Gated communities are not immune either.

So, it's best for every good citizen to always be prepared (within the laws) to make our neighborhoods unsafe for criminals as well. :D

Middletown, PA

Our town is pretty good. The neighborhood has its ups and downs. I live across the street from subsidized housing. Last year we had a gang problem, the police went to Fed housing and they started evictions of the problem houses quickly. Other than that it is a nice place.

safe

I live in a mixed (white and blue collar) neighborhood that sees very little serious crime. Yeah, there's the occassional burglary or stolen car to deal with but on the whole, it's very safe. We have a very strong police presence in our township that has a reputation of being 'unsympathetic' to those who break the law. They have a rapid response time when called and never come alone. That being said, I still keep my doors locked to keep the honest people honest.
