How think is a Glock 20/29 21/30? looking to take the 10mm plunge but I cant seem to find a gun to handle to know if it will actually fit my hand. How thick are they?

You should handle them to make your decision. I intended to buy the G30 SF model but, when I tried it and the standard model side-by-side, I ended up going with the standard model. The specs show the SF had a smaller grip but it didn't feel any smaller to my hands.

I think if you like Glocks generally, you'll probably like them. If you don't like Glocks, the converse will be true. I've shot two of the three, and had the same reaction that I have to all Glocks.

I bought the G20SF and a friend of mine bought a regular G20 a few weeks later. The SF model is somewhat shorter front-of-grip to backstrap. If you have small hands or just prefer a trimmer grip, the SF model is the way to go. I have big hands and either one would be fine for me. My buddy who bought the G20 actually has much smaller hands than I do, and he has no troubles with it.

If you can find a Glock G22 (the .40s&w model) I would expect that the gen3 G22 is pretty darn close to the G20SF in terms of grip. If you could handle the one, you could handle the other.

Std G20 on left, G20SF on right.

you may want to look into one of the gen 4 models, the grip is the same as a sf model but with the option of making it thicker. For me the biggest thing was the magazine release. as far as thickness goes between all the models it is the same.

They felt smaller to me BUT........the square shape combined with the smaller circumference caused the gun to naturally point right and high, while the standard 20/21 just point high. I opted for a standard 20.

If you don't have large hands, you probably won't like the standard size. If you're not sold on Glock, there are much more ergonomic options, namely the Witness pistols. They come in a bunch of flavors, from compact to fullsize, duty to competition, steel or polymer, etc. They can also be switched between calibers (9mm, .38 Super, .40, 10mm, .45) for about $250 per conversion. The .22 LR kits are ~$150.

I have five 10mm's, and when I want to enjoy shooting, the G20 is the last one I grab. It's meant to be the 15+1 10mm that gets bashed against rocks in the woods; The others have really nice finishes and are more expensive guns (except the Witness Compact, which only holds 12)

Thanks. I am aware of the SF variants, and from what I understand they are shorter from front to back on the grip but not side to side. I get that and it is one of the reasons I have been trying to get my hands on one, but I also wanted to know just how thick (side to side) the larger framed glocks were than the Glock 19 (the only Glock I have shot).

I'm not a Glock guy, but mostly due to the "Its gotta be a glock" aura around them. But after looking around they really do seem to be the most superior 10mm platform. (And I own a 9mm Witness that I love). Just trying to do my arm chair research as every shop I drop by says, uh, we have a 19, a 17, a 22, but sorry, nothing else. We can order one for you. Hmmm, don't know if I want it yet because I don't know if it fits me yet.

G19 and G30 side by side width comparison: http://glocktalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=16631030&postcount=7

The G20,21,29,30 are all the same thickness. The 45GAP's have a 9mm sized frame with a slide the same width as the G20,21,29,30.
Voyager Thank you! That is exactly what I was looking for.

Great Forum.

MachIV, a woods gun is exactly what I am looking for. (specifically for back country hiking) so weight is an issue and compared to my witness which I love but is an anchor and the slide cracking I've read about, the Glock seemed to fit the bill. I thought about getting a 10mm slide for my witness, which I still may do just to have, but it is less likely than a polymer pistol to come with me into the back country.

It's not only the thickness. I like the larger glock frames (G20, G21) with the houge grip on it because it fill my hands better and I feel I have a more secure hold.

Without the houge grip, I prefer the slightly smaller frame (G17, G22, G31, G37) because my finger could wrap around the 2 flat sides, flat finger grooved front and the rounded back of the glock handle better.

The Witness FS is only 6 ounces heavier than a G20 (27oz vs. 33oz).

The slide cracking was those with a rounded profile; They have been back to square for some time now. Both of mine run the hot stuff (180 @ 1,400 handloads) with no problems.

I almost bought another standard FS witness to fit this bill, but I already have two in 10mm, and the next will be a hunter model modified for 10mm magnum, so I kinda wanted a change of pace. That, and now I can talk about Glock's shortcomings without being called a hater. lol. My last was a gen II G22, traded it off years ago.

The Glock is a good pistol, it's just not very comfortable, doesn't point naturally, and I hate the trigger. They also have no soul. All this adds up to a gun that I'm not especially fond of, hence can beat up guilt free; I usually have a problem with becoming too fond of the ones I buy and not wanting to use them in a manner that could damage them cosmetically. Kinda like my S&W 629 3" is obviously a much nicer gun that my Charter Bulldog, but I don't particularly care if the Charter gets marred up, so it is the one that gets carried (that, and it's half the weight)

Thanks for the help. I actually found a pair of 20/29SFs to fondel (they just came in). The 20 was to big but the 29 almost fit. the upper part of my hand fit just fine but the lower part of the backstrap was uncomfortable.

With all the glock costomization I've been reading about, any way to reduce that hump?

Unfortunatly that is exactly one of the reasons I am looking at the Glock, that 6 ounces is the equivilant of my entire water filtration and cooking system.

That is my other problem. I dont mind the Glock falling into a stream or lake with me, I'd be worried about my witness (especially since mine is blued not stainless).

6 oz is a lot of extra weight. I use a G-20 as my back country gun. I've found it to be perfect for my needs. A G-29 might work as well and be a bit easier to carry, but the G-20 is still a lot smaller and lighter than any 357 or 44 revolver which would be my next choice.

...

I was going to say that there is a way to remove the hump, but I just checked Glockstore.com and found out that they do not offer it for the 20/21 guns. Its for the smaller frame only...too bad.

Did you get to compare a 20/21SF to the std 20/21? The difference is mostly in the 'hump' at the bottom of the grip. If you only got to handle the full size grips, you owe it to yourself to try the smaller SF grip, it is about 1/8th inch smaller and if you are close, that might be all the difference you need.

You could try a G29SF or G30SF. They have a "short frame" that's 2mm less front to back on the grip, but the great benefit of their grip is that the hump isn't as big relative to the top of the backstrap.

I did get to hold a SF, that was the only model they had in stock. But for the hump the 29 fit well. I guess I am going to have to use an aftermarket stock modification company to get it to actually fit.

Buy the gun, put 100 rounds through it and you will find it will now fit your hand just fine. The human hand will adapt to almost anything you can fit in it. Too much emphasis on making guns fit shooters instead of shooters learning to shoot what they have IMHO.
