How to avoid hassles with the TSA and still have a self-defense firearm when needed?

As noted, the whole premise of the thread is flawed by the prohibition on transferring (and taking possession of) a handgun outside of your home state.

The fairly minor hassles and worries of checking a firearm when you fly are no greater (in fact, probably a lot less, actually) than of other legal and realistic ways of having a gun with you at your destination.
