From now on you will never come into a situation where you will have to defend yourself or others... a crystal ball, time machine, or God himself told you, whatever... doesn't matter how you know, but you do believe that you will never have to defend yourself or others. Doesn't matter why - it is the truth and you believe this 100% for this scenario - in your mind it is written in stone - no exceptions.

How would you change? Would you be relieved? Or slightly saddened that your self defense weapons would never see action, knowing you will never have the ultimate use for them? Would your life only improve?

Would you stop carrying? Stop checking your environment? Sell your defense guns? Get into hunting more? Stop practicing? Stop shooting competition? Stop reloading? Take up another hobby?

Face value says this should be a very positive thing - not needing to defend yourself or others, but would there be any downsides?

:scrutiny:

It's fun and I wouldn't give up fun.

No change in buying or carrying habits or practice. It's fun, fun, fun.

Guns are fun. Lots of noise, targets react at a distance, and there's always the lure of tinkering and cleaning them.

I bet heaven has a nice shooting range :).

Heck yea. It would be great to live in bliss with having to CCW, or wear a seatbelt, or change the batteries in the smoke alarm or look both ways before crossing the street.

I'd stop carrying, buying expensive holsters and expensive hollowpoints. I might even avoid pocket guns altogether and concentrate on guns that were easier and more fun to shoot. I'd just enjoy shooting for pure recreation.

I'd be very glad to know that none of my guns would never be needed to harm somebody. I can't see how anybody could be sad about that. :scrutiny:

My daughters have strict instructions -- Dad is to be buried with a .45 and a bowie knife.

I don't know where I'm going, but I want both hands full when I get there.

I would stop carrying. Honestly, this weight on my hip aint doing my back any good, and it's kinda uncomfortable.

I would switch to shooting only .22s, or SA revolvers and bolt actions. I would keep a few of the others around for my future children to have after I am gone and to teach them on.

I.G.B.

As itgoesboom says this thing is heavy. I'de stop carrying.

Probably nothing else would change.
I'de still buy and shoot.

Saddened? No way, I would never be saddened at the idea that I'd never have to harm another person. Relieved is more like it.

Here I don't think there'd be any changes. When I first got into shooting it was for target shooting, thinking about HD and SD only came later.

Stop carrying? I'm not in a carry state now, but when/if I am I think I'd probably carry once or twice just to do so, but if I knew I'd never need it I guess it seems like it would be too much trouble.

Stop checking your environment? No way...Once a habit is as imbued as this one it is really hard to break so I don't think I'd even try (not worth the trouble since situational awareness isn't a health hazard or overly bothersome).

Sell defense guns, I don't think so. Heck, I don't live in a carry state and I have four good carry guns (3" S&W 65LS, Taurus 85, Colt Police Positive Special, and Bersa Thunder .380) and holsters for some of my full-sized guns (as well as practicing the prospect of carrying while at home). I enjoy shooting them as well as my bigger guns, it's just a different type of shooting- and I do plan to buy more "carry guns" before I get to a carry state because...I like them. Sure I rationalize with telling myself (and others) I'm getting them for if I move from MD or if MD becomes a CCW state, but if that was the case simply putting the money in the bank and holding on to it so I could buy a carry gun when I got there would do...if I was buying them to practice and be as proficient as possible then why not go with only one or two and take them every time I go to the range (I do take the Taurus and S&W nearly every range trip, but not the others).

Hunt? I don't hunt.

Stop reloading...No way! I don't reload defensive ammo, only range/fun ammo.

I would get in my own space shuttle and hang out on Mars or the Moon with my harem of nymphomaniac swimwear models, because if I am going to entertain fantasy worlds, why just stop with not ever being in danger of a violent assault?

Same here Chaim. Saddened in a way that part of your passion for guns would be of no use to you. I mean let's face it, self defense is a big part of why a lot of us have guns. Some of that passion I presume would be lost if there was no possibility of having to implement our training or use our guns. I'd think a few wouldn't train at all, or find other interests.

Goalie - I forgot the obligatory nymphomaniac swimwear models. Now that changes everything! :D

My back would appreciate it. Probably wouldn't wear vests. A lot of things would leave my pockets. Like the Sabbath all week long!

I'd still play with 6" revolvers & .22 autos from time to time.

The only thing that would change for me is that I would stop carrying every where I go.

Range time wouldn't decrease by one second.

I have rarely heard a Hollywood type say anything that made sense. But one time Dean Martin was arrested for carrying a gun illegally (it being California.)

As he was leaving the court, some air-headed news-chick shoved a microphone in his face and said, "Do you think everyone should carry a gun?"

And Deano said, "No. Just me."

A whole lot more .22s would be joining the stable...no more carry. Shooting would be for the pure pleasure of it; not mostly keeping and honing defensive skills.

I'd probably still carry, but maybe not as much. I'd still hit up the range when I could. (Not like I have lots of time to do it now anyways). I would still buy, shoot, play with guns, but some of the fun would be gone. I mean admit it we all wish we could be a hero and save a life it's just now we wouldn't be able to use our guns.

Tallpine - I don't think I'd miss any of them. I just know they wouldn't be able to hurt me. Besides rattlesnake tastes good when roasted over a campfire. The problem is there isn't much meat.

Vern Humphrey - you mean you aren't gonna leave your stuff here for your daughters? Daddy said if I buried him with any guns he'd wake up and slap me. I don't think I want that. I know where I'm going and I want to leave my gun(s) here to be put to good use by my family.

:)

Of course I'm leaving guns for my daughters and grand daughter -- all I'm taking with me is one measley little .45 and a bowie knife!

My oldest daughter was here when I was getting ready to go out to a political rally -- I've shaved my beard and got together a nice wardrobe for such events. She looked at me and said, "That's not you, Dad. Lose the cellphone and put your .45 back on."

My younger daughter was thinking about autitioning for the "Blair Witch Project," but the line was too long.

After seeing the film, she said, "I couldn't have done it, anyway -- every time someone shireked, I'd have said, 'Shut up and sit down -- my Dad will be here in about five minutes with a gun, a knife, a map and a compass.'"

I like Absolut's answer. Hey you are invulnerable. Have fun with it. :)

Have to quibble....

a situation where you will have to defend yourself or others
Does this include mountain lions, tigers, rouge elephants and little old ladies in Caddilacs who can't see over the steering wheel?

Having asked that... Target shooting is an art form that needs no defense. NRA bullseye 2700, Small Bore Rifle, Hi Power Rifle, the various International disciplines are all very enjoyable and demanding. I enjoy all these and more. Benchrest rifle is fun.

Would I carry and be aware? Yeah, I'd like to think so. Old habits are hard to break. I might carry my 1903 Colt Pocket Pistol in 32 ACP more than a 45 Commander, but I'd still carry.

Would I be relieved at the thought of not having to shoot or kill anyone? Yeah, you betcha.

I fear we really don't have to prepare for this eventuality.

Lions and tigers and bears, oh, my
One of our neighors here, about 1/2 mile to the west, had a mama cougar raise a litter on their place last winter. I've never gotten to see the "lady" myself but another neighbor said they had also seen her around.

And horses do get killed by cats around here now and then. One that I knew of didn't die in the attack, but succumbed to wounds despite vet treatment. Its shoulder was ripped open.

They don't usually bother people, but you never know. But we have a couple of hobbit-horses as part of our family now.

No reason why there couldn't be a bear around here, though I have never seen one or any sign in this neighborhood. But up in the Little Belt and Little Snowy Mountains they are thick. I have followed a couple around just to see how close I could get. They can't hear like deer can, and if you stay downwind and don't move when they are looking at you, you can get pretty darn close. The funny thing is how a bear will look around while he is "answering nature's call" to see if anyone is watching - just like a person.:)

So poo-poo if you want, ET - or come out here and maybe we can go watch a bear poo-poo ...:D
