How to get my guns back?

When I changed duty stations from Ft. Gordon, GA. to Ft. Bliss, TX. I went straight from one duty station to the next without going through Virginia to pick up my guns. This was done by my wife insistence to not let the girls miss any school :banghead: . My parents have moved to Alabama were my guns now reside. Here is the problem. The companys that want to hire me are in Texas and they want me to start as soon as I retire. So The Good Lord only knows when I'll get there to pick them up. Since it looks like I'll be a permanent resident of Texas. My dad is keeping my guns and ammo in abox in the shed :banghead:
Any thoughts?? Advice??

Check the regs. If I recall correctly you can send them to yourself most likely. Will have to use a common carrier like UPS or Fedex. Not sure if the USPO can send them or not.

UPs will only ship to a FFL, Gun Smith or Manufacture. They will not ship from Private Party to Private Party.

You may be able to have them shipped to a near by FFL, the FFL may charge you a small handleing fee.

Some gun shops will store your guns for you for a small fee.

Check around and have your Dad drop them off.

Have the guns store clean and store them for you until you have the time to pick them up.

The combined cost of FFL on each end helping ship them for you is likely less than the cost of gas.

Depends on the dealer; some dealers charge $35-50 per gun for the service. If there are a couple of dozen guns involved, you can buy a whole lot of gas for that.

You can legally ship them to yourself (no handguns through USPS). Check the "shipping FAQ" thread here. The self-to-self shipping is for these situations where you move and shipping is the only way to move the firearms.

First of all, thank you for your service to our Country, and best wishes in this Christmas season.

--You have a good retirement paycheck from the military, effective immediately.

You have a good family with (I hope) good health.

You have another job and source of income (above and beyond that stated above).

You are now in Texas

Pard, I'm sure you'll work out the details of how to get your firearms back home, but in the interim I'd try and talk my dad out keeping them in the shed.

Unless it's better than most, I'd suspect that it's not insulated, heated or air conditioned. Your firearms are currently getting cold and damp from condensation. Unless some precautions are taken you're going to have a bunch of rusted pieces of steel where your guns used to be.

You can ship them to yourself, the key word being YOU. Not your brother, not your dad. Legally, you'd have to go to AL, and mail them home yourself.

You can make AL and back in a weekend, with time to spare if you drive. You may also think about a flight, fly out in the morning, visit your folks, mail your rifle home, take pistols back with you on plane.

UPS regs forbid shipping to all but gunsmiths, manufactures, etc etc.

Except UPS doesn't write laws, only company policy.

Have your folks UPS them to you. Slap some insurance on there, and you are set.

US law is what counts. Now, double check for sure, but I think you only have to inform the carrier if you are sending firearms. So mail them a letter saying it. Hey, you informed them. Now send your folks down to the terminal to send the guns. A company can have any darn policy they want. If they happen to find someone breaking that policy, their only recourse is to refuse to do business with that person. Company policy changes all the time, who can say what is policy right now at UPS anyways. Unless you are a UPS employee, what customer knows all the regs? If UPS somehow finds out they are guns and it is against company policy, all you are out is mom and dad's trip to the local UPS station.

I got some C&R stuff shipped to me, and the clerks at the Senders UPS hub coulda cared less about who it was going to and what that funny piece of paper he was showing them said.

Get them boxed up, and take them to UPS and try. You know the laws now, just stay within them and get over any UPS employee hurdle as they *might* show.
