In the last year or so I have heard that some police departments are turning away from pistols chambered in .40 S&W or .357 SIG because the pistols they are using are shooting themselves apart in those calibers.

I have a Sig P239 in .40 S&W and am thinking about getting a .357 barrel for it. It appears to be very well made. Better made than most. How well do you think it would hold up to lots of hot rounds through it?

I've heard (from folks in LE agencies) of problems with SOME models of Glocks in .357 (sub-compacts?) and some S&W M&P sin .357, but never a word about SIGs. (S&W has discontinued the M&P in .357 SIG, at least temporarily.)

Of course, most of the folks using .357 SIG in SIGs are using P229s or P226s... not P239s.

I heard of no problems with the P239s, but haven't heard of PD using them, either.

I have a Sig 239 .40 that is an LEO version that were ordered by Monterey PD for the Detective division and sold off in favor of Sig 229. They wanted more capacity but I can't legally have that capacity so it combined with more accuracy training :) works for me. My 239 .40 strikes me as a tank and has the heaviest recoil spring I have ever seen. The locking pieces are massive for such a compact pistol and the slide is beefy as is the barrel. It still recoils pretty snappy and slaps my hand a good one as the aluminum frame reduces the weight down to 26 .oz. I really like the gun and bought the .357 Sig barrel and only fired a box of factory ammo to get the feel of the .357 which does have about 25% less recoil than the .40 it seems to me. I will be keeping mine .40 as I have a lot of .40 ammo and I really like to carry the super accurate 239 on a trim belt holster when I visit Oregon regularly. I think you won't have to worry about shooting a 239 in .357 Sig loose in any reasonable round count.

I have a P239 that was my EDC for many years until not too long ago. When I first purchased it, I got a great deal on nearly 1000 rounds of the Federal BP 9mm +P+ and shot all of it through the P239. I didn't notice any significant wear to the frame or internals. Over 8000 rounds or so later and it still looks brand new. I would imagine that the .357 sig version would hold up just as well.

I have the P239 with .40 and .357 and a second P239 DAK in .40. They just keep on running, but my round count is low. One platform I'll never part with.
