I have plenty of everything pistol-wise, even .22lr. Where I am short is for the new .223. I hadn't planned on it so the ammo situation is dire. I have enough for 1000 rds....wish I had 10 times that. Thankful for the 550b in this situation.

However I have zero, zip, nada 22LR. 38 Special is not too far behind.

Im okay on everything else, (22mag, 380acp, 9mm, 40sw, 10mm, 357mag, 45acp, 10mm, 44mag) although I did go a little hog wild with a new 1911 and had to slow my roll.
ETA: Left out rifle and shotgun ammo as I am mainly shooting pistols these days, so my stash remains untouched.

This is why I limit the number of calibers I keep. More ammo of each, fewer calibers.

My 22lr supply is dwindling. I have about 8K, otherwise I reload and the bullets and primers are coming back in small quantities and powder has been my main thing. Still have enough to support my habit for at least anohter 6-9 months without slowing down. Hopefully by then, Ill of had a chance to restock, if not, I'll make cut backs or shoot what I have in good supply first. Need to do more rifle shooting anyways.

The buying of extra ammo began in early '08. There is 'plenty', unless the house burns down.
The first motivation was the fact that many types of surplus were quickly vanishing, right when the interest was sparked in Enfields and later Garands. Most of us realized that the possible Politburo in Wash DC would exploit any tragedy, especially After a re-election.

The .25-.30/round for surplus Czech, Yugo or Rom. 8mm Mauser seemed high to many people back in '10, but now it seems pretty cheap.
With 2,100 rds. of that type, why sell the Yugo rifle?

All three answers apply to me. I have plenty of ammo for some of my guns and am still shooting them regularly. I have plenty of ammo for some other guns, but am concerned about being able to replace it, so I'm not shooting them. And for some guns, I have no ammo and either can't find it or refuse to pay jack-ass scalper prices...

All ammo and reloading supplies are being kept safe! Plinking/Range time is not on the agenda much anymore. That time is spent reloading for the better part.

And the Love of Black Powder is starting to make me look at pulling those out for the plinking fix, and they are a lot of fun! Reduced loads make the powder go further and bullet casting is a breeze!

I'm good on 40 since I've been reloading it. Got a couple hundred 223 and I'm starting to reload that too, got the makings to go up to a thousand on that, so I should last the summer or most of it at least - I'm pretty slow and methodical at the reload station.

The availability of most center fire ammo at my LGS is hit or miss(pardon the pun). Sometimes they have it and sometimes they don't. 22LR is in limited supply as well and is running about .10/round. Have not seen any 9mm for a couple of months. I still shoot my CC weapons as much as possible so I try to restock on 380 and 38Spl as they come in.

The one thing I cannot wrap my head around is the .22 LR shortage!

CCI Alone claims to produce 4 million rounds per day of .22

Leaving December out of the picture and weekends too!

That is approximately 352,000,000 .22

316,668,567 estimated 2013 Population of US

I know that is less than 1 round a piece, but this only 1 manufacture!

And in 12 months they will have theoretically produced

1,056,000,000 rounds at one place

There is more to this shortage than we really want to know! :scrutiny:

I learned my lesson in the Clinton years. I reload almost all my ammo and I started stocking up on components when Bush's poll numbers started tanking - around 2006. I have plenty. I was feeling a little silly about the growing piles until the CT shooting. Then I got a lot smarter overnight.;) It really helps that I have limited my calibers over the years, with multiple guns that shoot the same ammo.

But I dropped the ball on .22lr. I just got two new .22 guns right before everything went crazy, so I ordered two boxes of about 30 kinds of .22 ammo to test. Never got to the testing and now I'm halfway afraid to shoot it.

4 million x 5 days a week x 16 weeks = 320 million/525 round box = 609,000 boxes in four months.

4 million .22 rds is only 7619 boxes per day. If just 10 million Americans want just ONE box of .22 we will have to wait over 3 1/2 years to fill that order. With more manufactures we can reduce that to a few months instead of years.

SharpDressedMan,

I'm with you on this note! Going out to Vegas in a short while, all winnings will be for ammo purchases. Might not spend all of my ganbling monies, more in the poke that way. Ha Sensible way to perform during this dilemma, just buy and stash. I have plenty, just not able to expend much with the cold/snowy weather. :fire:

Yes this shortage is manufactured (at least in my opinion) by the government. I only have my hand loads for now, and no components to make more.

I do have some ammo. I seem to have less time or opportunity to shoot than a few years ago. I haven't shoot 200 rounds this year! Just cannot seem to fit in the range trips. I've got grand kids and friends that are ready to go...I'm the hold up.

I have some ammo, but not enough. I have some reloading components, but not enough of them either. I have been building a supply (and shooting a lot) since 2008 and I still have much work to accomplish once this craziness ends. I just did not anticipate the .22 shortage.

I saw a documentary on the CCI plant just the other day - iirc it is in two parts and it's on YouTube. Those 4 million rounds go onto 12 pallets. A stake-bed truck could haul that off in one load.

Right now everyone is still in a panic mode or whatever you want to call it. Midway and places like that will get a shipment in and it is sold out within minutes because everyone who sees it grabs the max they allow per order. With all the web-crawlers finding available sources, that just adds to the quick sell-outs.

I think we're all a little guilty of contributing to the shortage. Six months ago if you walked by a stack of 500-rd bricks at WallyWorld, how many would you instantly buy? How many would you instantly buy today, assuming the prices weren't all jacked up? Multiply that difference by a few million and its not hard to understand why it's taking so long to keep supplies on the shelves.

And BTW, there is plenty of 22 ammo out there if you're willing to pay outrageous prices to the ammo-flippers. If you are willing to pay $100-200 for a brick that used to be $20, you can buy all you can carry.

i know its good to practice and such but i walked out with my fav revolver yesterday and shot a better group than i had in years.hadnt shot that gun for at least 3 years.
So you haven't shot the gun in 3 years and the group you shot was the best that you had shot in years? How could it not have been? ;)
