The '38' in HP-38 is for the .38 Special, the cartridge it was designed for.

I agree 4.0gr under a 158gr cast bullet in the .38 Spl. For the 9mm I charge 4.4gr W231 under a 124gr bullet and 5.0gr to 5.5gr W231 under a 230gr bullet in the 45 Auto.
I use it in 9MM and .45 ACP like others here. Shoots great in all my .45’s under 230 grain bullets. Oddly enough it works great in most of my 9MM’s but the Hellcat seems to like Longshot better than HP-38/W231....
