I'm looking for a final military semi-auto to complete my collection. I'm playing with the idea of a compact, forward grip semi-auto, either the AMD-65 in 7.62x39 or the STG-556 (AUG clone) in 5.56. The STG is twice the $$$ as the AMD (from Red Jacket) and I can use my AK mags on the AMD but in terms of ammo supply, is 7.62x39 going to scarce in the next couple years compared to .223/5.56? Is there talk about shutting out foreign suppliers of 7.62 ammo? My only gripe about the AMD is the wire stock, at least on the STG, it seems like it would be a lot more comfortable. I also see folks getting the bipod barrel version and using the STG as a SAW-type of weapon (SAW = squad automatic weapon).

my other semi-autos include a Sig 556, PTR-91 and a Arsenal 107 AK.

Seeing as you already have an AK, I'd go for the STG-556.

I'd love to get an STG-556, but I just can't justify the cost right now. The AMD-65 would be nice to have but on a coolness the factor the STG beats it hands down.

for the STG, 16" or 20"?? I'm leaning towards a 20" for a bull pup design due to the longer sight plane. If this was a traditional rifle, 16" would be fine for me.

Seeing as the STG uses an optic, the sight radius won't be affected by the barrel length. I'd personally go with the 20" for the extra muzzle velocity.
