Hunting after you've reported (Oregon)

Hi friends!

I thought I was done with hunting opportunities for the year by the end of November and went ahead and reported online for the three big game tags I held (Coast Elk, Black Bear, and Cougar). I did not fill any of the three.

Well I'm going into cougar country tomorrow and plan on being out in the canyons for a few days. I plan on carrying a .357 handgun with me and, given the opportunity, would love to chance to harvest a cougar.

The season is still open until the end of the year, but I've already reported on the tag. Could I still legally shoot a cougar, or did I forfeit my chance by reporting already?

some places require reporting your hunting success or failures. its like a census report for wildlife.

joshk-k, you shuld ask a game-warden/wildlife officer and consider next year do not file your reports until you are sure you're finished.

If you had to report these tags it would have been smart to do so only once they are no longer valid because the season ended. Call the game wardens for your area and talk to them.

Calling Fish and Wildlife would answer the question, I'm sure. The issue for me is that tomorrow is Christmas and then Monday they'll all be off for the holiday. And that's two of the four days I'll be in hunting territory. I'm not willing to risk a poaching violation, so I won't until I know.

I did learn the lesson of just waiting until the end of the season. I was already online reporting on my unfilled elk tag and just went ahead with the others for convenience's sake, I guess. Lesson learned.

Realistically, the odds of me getting to within handgun distance of a cougar in the next few days is slim. You never know though!

Why do they make you report if you didn't kill anything? That's asinine. If you did kill something, they would know it already. And if you didn't, well they know that as well (since you didnt report a kill).

What dothe game regs say? What's the state code provision? Who cares what the game Warden says. Look up the regulation yourself.

We have the same thing here in Alaska. I learned a long time ago to wait until the end of the season , at least 30 days after. This state you are S.O.L. once you submit your harvest tag report. The thing that gets me is if you forget and your late in doing so. Your banned from getting a tag the next year.
