I know this is a hunting forum, but am looking for anyone with experience in the Memphis TN area for some good locally owned bbq. I dont want some chain restauraunt or dont tell me "Cracker Barrel" or "Hooters" We are heading to TN over spring break. Any suggestions for a mom and pop establishment? Also, some interesting ideas for any outdoor points of interest from Memphis over to Chattanooga? thanks,

TEXAS?:banghead::banghead::banghead:

Don't you know that beef is suppose to be in steak form. Beef and BBQ sauce just don't cut it. If you want real barbeque, go to the lowcountry of South Carolina. That's where you'll find out how barbeque was intended to be made.:D:D:D

ETA-Sorry, though I've been through Memphis several times, I don't know of any good barbeque restaurant. Supposedly it's good (to some people), it's just not my choice of BBQ. If you look for a smoker on a trailer, parked in a parking lot, that'd be a good choice most likely. The best barbeque usually comes from the smallest places. I have eaten at an excellent steak restaurant there, but unfortunatly I can't remember the name.

No thats funny. Not all of our bbq is chopped brisket JWF III. We grill some mean steaks too. Also we are king of the ribs.

Pork is okay for every day. Any nimrod can BBQ pork. Briskets and fajitas are for special events and they come from BEEF. :D It takes a Texan to make it right, though. I wouldn't expect you Carolinians to know anything about proper preparation and smoking of a brisket or grilling fajitas. It's an art, ya know, and you have to be born with it. :D

JWF III, Texas is NOT where you find merely "beef and barbecue sauce". A little sauce is okay, but I've yet to see where it's not used. KC, Memphis, Jawgia, Florida, wherever. In Georgia, the barbecued pork is good, but their beef is more like roast w/sauce.

Used to be a shacky little barbecue joint in Gainesville, Florida. They had four levels of sauce: Mild, medium, hot, and: Super Saber Jet! SSJ was great for tenderizing boot soles.

Good brisket doesn't need sauce. One advantage for Texas is that mesquite gives a better smoked flavor than hickory. Dunno why, but it does.

Rendezvous has hands-down the best barbecue in Memphis. Period.

Located at 52 S 2nd St., just across the street from the Peabody Hotel.

The place is a landmark there, for good reason. Any trip through Memphis will guarantee that I stop in for some 'cue. Don't be surprised if there is a waiting list of an hour or so on a weekend. It's worth the wait.

Simmer down we are just having fun. No need for name calling. Besides you are the one looking for resturants in the hunting forum. It appears maybe you too have some studying to do.

Hey try Neely's they have good stuff! We had a contract a couple blocks away from there a year or so back a couple of my guys ate there twice or more a week for 6 months.

Re: Hunting in Memphis

I recommend comfy casual clothing that not only allows for comfy carry of concealed weapons in waist band, , also for conceal carry of a rack of ribs.

Tom Givens and his bunch at Rangemaster are most wonderful about assisting folks in regard to personal safety.
I recommend contacting them if you have any questions in regard to Memphis, and personal safety while hunting down BBQ in Memphis.

Rendezvous,
yep, hands down the best and there is a reason.

Corky's,
I suggest you order fried pies to go, before you order your meal. These pies are that good and one is wise to makes sure some are made up and ready to go.

B.B. Kings,
Only been once , but have partaken of the fare brought back to me numerous times and was quite impressed with the food and atmosphere.

Now I recommend viewing this video which I am providing a link to , to assist in getting one in the mindset of hunting in Memphis, and to better famlarize themselves with the habitat.

Oh, the video also shares other game one might want to hunt in Memphis as well.

For those that rave about Rendezvous, you really need to check out Central BBQ, I think Rendezvous is way over-rated.

In Memphis, hit Renevous BBQ. They are in the ally behind the Peabody Hotel. Been there forever. Best in town. Specialize in a dry rub, which is more of a memphis thing.

In Chattanooga there's a few places I like. Nothing real notable down town in the 'cue department, though a stop at Wally's on McCallie is certainly worth it. The one halfway up Signal mountain is probably the best (and my brain is going blank on the name on me right now). There is also a place on Missonary Ridge, Sugar's Ribs you see it from the highway - has a sign of a big fat black woman. Its pretty good 'cue, but is owned by a white yuppie who owns a bunch of other restaurants in town (there's actually a bunch of restuarant chains based in C-town, Krystal (which Rocks!!) and the company that owns Big River Grill and Gordon Biersch)

BTW, a HUGE fan of Armstrongs in Summerville, GA (but thats another 30-40 minutes into GA from Chattanooga - well worth the drive (its on Route 27 next to the old Arby's) but its your call).

As to points of interest along the way?? Well Missonary Ridge and Jack Daniels and George Dickel and Nashville and Fall Creek Falls State Park (way cool park).

thanks to all who responded with their choices. I will write them all down. My wife, who is a food channel viewer had been interested in the Neelys BBQ place, and we will consider all the others listed. Thanks,

Ahhh, SM, that You Tube link really brings back old memories! Haven't been to Memphis in years, but when I was living in Arkansas, used to go over at times to party. Had some mighty good times over there!

Some of those places shown in the video remind me of the kind of juke joints where, when you go in, they check you for a gun. If you don't have one, they give you one. ;)

Que, fried chicken, cornbread, whiskey, and blues! Hard to beat.

It is for the kids.

Please, take a moment from hunting and run by St. Jude's Research Hospital for Children.
Please.

If nothing else have a cup a coffee, and just take it all in.

Children's Hospitals are another I ask folks to please visit while "hunting" for whatever , wherever.

You can find a Children's Hospital by going here:

Don't tell anyone I have spent all the time I have, going back decades, at St. Judes, and various Children's Hospital.

Yes, I have hunted BBQ in Memphis, just as I have hunted quail, and doves, and other game, all over. I have hunted for a ranges to compete with a shotgun too, and often times, it was for the kids.

If you ever see a copy of The Old Man And The Boy by Robert Ruark, in one these Hospitals, well, it might have been left by someone you know on this forum.

Two more videos, the first one , I shared with some kids, and staff. Being older I was familiar with this group.
Oh the kids were so funny.
Just listen to the song from a kids perspective, and think how kids would sing and dance.

The second one, kids and staff said was "my song". It seems I needed a song one day after "sneaking in" Corky's Fried pies for some staff and kids. *wink*

Don't tell anyone I did stuff like this on "hunting trips" and "competition trips", it might blow my reputation with Anti's, PETA, and Tyranny in general.
