Hunting With Classic Firearms

I occasionally hunt with my great-grandfather's old 1936 Winchester Model 21 in 16 gauge. Does anyone else out there on THR hunt with a shotgun or rifle that would be considered classic or vintage? Pictures are always appreciated. Thanks.

My goal for this year has been to take up small game hunting with such a gun. I have a circa 1908 12ga single shot (marked simply with "Champion") that belonged to my great grandfather, and an old 1940s stevens .22/.410 that belonged to my grandfather. I am working on the .22/.410 right now but if I can't get it ready in the next week or two I'll just have to hit the woods in february with the 12ga! I need to take up shotshell reloading since I only plan to fire black powder shells in that aging shotgun.

Yep I plan to be turkey hunting with a Marlin model 19. I have hunted with a 100 year old 25-35 that came from a great uncle.

I should really take a better photo, but I usually take this out at least once each duck season with some non-toxic shot. It is a pre WW-2 FN Belgian made SXS. The gun has an interesting history.

My dad served in Europe during WW-2. His unit occupied a small German town either shortly before, or shortly after the war ended. Dad couldn't remember the details. All civilian arms were rounded up and piled in the street to be destroyed. An officer told the men they could pick up anything they wanted. There had been a gun shop in town. This was still new with hangtags when dad mailed it home.

Vintage Winchester 52B Sporter.....in recent years these have become one of the most sought after collectible rim fires. Pretty expensive rifles new, selling then for over $100. I enjoy getting it out now and then to hunt squirrels with the peep sights.

All of my pheasant hunting is still done with my Grandapa's Stevens Model 311 SXS in 16 ga. that he purchased in 1932. Last time I had it out was a coupla weeks ago. Every year I take my dad's old Model 97 Winchester out for one day of turkey hunting. Been three years since it took a bird as once a year runnin' and gunnin' for turkeys is about all the abuse I want the old girl to endure. I sometimes hunt with my dad's model 94 lever 30-30 that he bought with his last check from the Marine Corps when he got home in '45, while my youngest son occasionally uses his Great-Grandpa's Model 94 .32 special bought in the early 20s. Most of my deer hunting is done with handguns nowadays, but for years, my primary deer rifle was a M-1917 Eddystone. She twernt pretty, but she never let me down.

my classic five double barreled shotguns,top to bottom. one, remington model 1900 12ga with steel barrels. two, fox sterlingworth 12ga. three, fox sterlingworth 16ga. four, baker batavia leader 16ga. five, browning bss sporter 20ga. i shoot and hunt with all of them and a plus when you hunt with them is you can wear funny cloths. eastbank.

If I can get decent groups, I'll take my 1916 vintage Savage .250-3000 on a pronghorn hunt. It's pristine. I take great care of my rifles.

I hunt with a 1960's Browning that I consider classic . My dad gave it to me when I was about 12 years old . It is still my favorite shotgun .

It was my only all purpose shotgun until last year when I tried to replace it with a Weatherby SA-08 . That didn't work out too well so I sold it and went back to my Browning .

I bought a Winchester SX3 this year and it looks like it might get most of the bad weather hunting now .

I still like my Browning the best though . To me when I hold it, it feels like I am holding a high quality, precision tool and work of art .

A 1958 Winchester Model 70 in .243.Got it in 1991 from my older hunting buddy before he passed from cancer.My primary deer rifle.It has taken more than 40 deer,3 of them this past season.Also occasionally carry my mothers Winchester model 37 12 guage single shot for turkeys

Love the idea and practice it. My bird guns are pre-WWI and as a fun project I have sought out guns that were made the same year I was born - 1951. Not real old, but so far I've got a Winchester Model 12 Heavy Duck, and a S&W Model 17...

I hunt quail with my LC Smith 20ga sxs every year.
I also carried my 1858 Remington on my trapline.
Went after turkeys with a Navy Arms 12ga percussion sxs.

Here is my Winchester High Wall .219 I. Zipper. It has a 26" Buehmiller barrel twisted 1-16" and originially chambered for the R2 Lovell. The scope is a Lyman 10X Supertargetspot.

The rifle is very accurate and effective on pests. I shoot it using the marksman positions with it's sling and also from a rest in the field.

The load is the 50 gr Sierra over 3031 or 4064.

Springfield Trapdoor

I was going to take my 1884 45/70 Springfield trapdoor out for deer season. When I went to check the sights I found my old eyes couldn't see them Since I didn't have a bayonet for it I put back in the safe.

My "old" Felix Sarasqueta 12 gauge SxS might not qualify, but she still gets birds, Kickin' SOB, but ain't so bad with dove loads. That gun is SUPER well regulated, shoots like a high end double rifle with slugs, but I really prefer NOT to fire slugs in it. The gun can handle it, just hard on ME. I took a duck off the tank with it this year, but mostly it's my woods bummin' gun. It sat in my safe for 30 years after they passed steel shot laws. I used to hunt ducks like it was a religion and this was what I bought this gun for, ducks and geese. It doubled as a dove gun in the 70s because it's the only shotgun I had. Worked, though. Since moving to the woods, I've found it a GREAT woods bummin' shotgun. Ain't really hunting with it except targets of opportunity. Took a few dove with it this past season, too.

Killed one deer with my Grandpa's old Remington M722 in .257 Roberts this season. I hunted with it because this was the 50th anniversary since shooting my first with the same gun in the fall of 1963 at age 11. I just felt it was the thing to do, try to take one with that gun this past season.

That's it. That's all I got.

grandads model 12

Iowa legalized dove hunting in 2011. Took my first doves with my granddads model 12 winchester made in 1931. Story is that he traded a ton of hay for the model 12 in the mid 30's. They were struggling during those depression years, it was his most valued possession.

I have an old hopkins and Allen 12 ga single thats on its 4 generation of family, I reload for it trying to keep low pressure smokeless loads in the 1100Fps range, great shooting gun, also love my grandfathers old 99 savage in 30 savage to hunt deer with, have a pair of eraly 50s vintage Win 30 30s to hunt with, 22 cal is a pump win hammer gun my dad bought when he got out of WW2

I forgot about the '97 Win that my great-grandad bought around the turn of the century. He went to the hardware store to buy a Greener sxs. The clerk told him he'd give a full refund for the '97 if he didn't like it.
He liked it. It's in my gun cabinet.

I started hunting in the mid 50's. Started with a M70 30-06. Over the years, my collection of pre 64's has grown and I use them along with admiring them.

My first few years hunting (woodchucks, raccoons, possum...) were with my grandpa's 1937 Springfield single shot 20 ga. He bought it for $7.00 back then. I put a serious dent in the varmint population with that gun and used it to learn to break clays too.

I have a Winchester model 61 made in 1936 that gets used a fair amount for squirrels and small varmints. Has a Marbles tang sight.
