Husband, wife exchange shots; wife killed

Article Date: Monday, December 17, 2007
NEWBURY, N.H. (AP) _ A Newbury man shot and killed his wife after she fired a shotgun blast at him during an argument, police said.

Karen Dion, 38, was killed Sunday in her driveway.

In a statement, authorities said Dion's husband, Gary Dion, 37, called police around 2:30 p.m. to report shots fired at their home. Arriving officers found Mrs. Dion's body in the driveway.

Police say the exchange of gunfire was prompted by a dispute between husband and wife.

"After that dispute, Mrs. Dion retrieved a shotgun and fired it at Mr. Dion, who was outside clearing the driveway," said a statement from the attorney general's office and police. "Mr. Dion then retrieved his own firearm and after being confronted by Mrs. Dion, who still had her shotgun, he shot and killed her in the driveway of their home."

Dion, who had been using a snowblower, was not injured, said Senior Assistant Attorney General Jeff Strelzin.

Dion has not been charged as the investigation continues. He was not armed when police arrived, Strelzin said, and was released Sunday night after questioning.

Strelzin said many details had not been pinned down, or could not be released as police investigate.

Strelzin told WMUR-TV that Mrs. Dion fired at her husband from a balcony, and that Gary Dion then got a handgun from his vehicle and shot her near a garage.

He could not elaborate on Karen Dion's wound, the number of shots fired or the nature of the dispute.

"Generally, we are looking into their relationship, their history, which will include talking to neighbors, family and friends," Strelzin said.

Strelzin said as far as they know, no one else saw the incident, and police were canvassing the neighborhood to see if anyone heard anything.

He said the home is on Mountain Road, off Route 103, and can be seen by at least one other home.

Well, I wonder, if he could get a gun out of his car, why didn't he run or drive away??
Leaves to hope, that they did not have any children!

I don't get the "talking to people about their history" jazz. Are they going to the DA with the likelihood that there was something more than self-defense? Sounds like it may have actually been self-defense.

Well, I wonder, if he could get a gun out of his car, why didn't he run or drive away??

getting a gun out of a car can generally be done while crouching behind concealment/cover... getting in the drivers seat, starting the car and putting it in gear makes you a highly visible and easy to hit target...

glad my wife is scared of guns. She is old fashion, she prefers to go after me with an iron skillet. j/k.

As far as him shooting her instead of running I suspect she meant business and this wasn't just her cute way of getting attention.

WHACKED!!

This sounds like s**t that you would here about back home in WV or KY...ah the good 'ol family reunions.

No but on a serious not, she must have been a lousy shot to not hit him with a couple of shots with a shotgun at pretty close range (thats not really that serious)

...if he could get a gun out of his car, why didn't he run or drive away??

The article says he was running the snowblower. I'm guessing a lot of people are stuck home until they're dug out.

Everybody loses on this one. Decedent, husband, and pro 2A folk.

As with most of these, I'm sure there is much more to the story.

The neighbors will say there were never any signs of distress--they kept to themselves and didn't cause problems.

What exactly do you say in defense of the 2A to an anti who says "see!? this is what letting more people have guns would do!"

That they could have done it with anything else, knife, iron skillet as rocinante puts it, etc if they really wanted to?

Not to sound stupid and have no defense for this one, but I'm curious to what other people have to say.

I'm not necessarily speaking to this particular situation. Truly a tragedy.

But many people don't realize that domestic violence is not just "man vs. woman." Women are just as capable to be the abusers. Often the abused fail to really "get" what's wrong with the relationship and decide to stay. Sometimes with lethal consequences. It is possible that the male, thinking it's just another argument that will blow over, went about his routine while the female went manic and decided to "show him who's boss." Only she missed and he didn't.

Please, do not construe this in a way thinking it is chauvinistic. All to often we see and hear about similar situations where the man decides that if he can't have her, nobody can. Bad situation.

And again, not trying to speculate on this particular case, but kind of as a response to post #18. Bad people will always acquire or devise weapons. The good people need to have appropriate and effective tools for their defense, wherever they are.

See!?

What exactly do you say in defense of the 2A to an anti who says "see!? this is what letting more people have guns would do!"
Well, for starters . . .

I think this incident clearly illuminates why it's a bad idea to give birth to male children. They're always doing stuff like that.

I think this incident clearly illuminates why marriage should be banned. This is always happening to married couples. If it's not guns, it's frying pans and fists. Marriage is clearly a bad idea.

I think this incident clearly illuminates why no one should be allowed to conduct his life without constant medical supervision. Any time you allow individuals (or couples, in this instance) to run around, indiscriminately living life, bad things happen. A psychologist should be appointed to every marriage. Later, when we have enough psychologists, we should assign one to each individual. Uncontrolled people just screw things up. We need to get better human controls in place.

Shall I go on?

Isn't NH the "Live Free or Die" state? seriously a tradedgy. even if he didnt have the keys he had feet to run. shotgun gets less effective as feet get goin quick. She was on the balcony! run to back of house and to those neighbors. Free love isn't free. mental illness is rampant in this current society. Hippa laws prevent real help to those afflicted. how sad

Did everybody miss the fact that the woman fired from the balcony, missed, then came down to the driveway with the gun?

Sounds like she was gonna make sure she got him and moved closer to get a better shot.

I really just don't think running was an option for this guy.

Oh, and Geek... "Firearms are not domestic conflict resolution tools"?
Maybe they shouldn't be, but it's kind'a obvious that especially in this case... they are.
