I am going ballistic! (photos)

Thanks guys!

I used a Canon 10D digital SLR camera with flash and a piezo-electric sound trigger. The exposition time was around 0,02 millisec, unfortunately not short enough to freeze the bullet. (Only a $5000 microflash can do that.) The shots were made in complete darkness - the range master was a bit uneasy about that, but we used extra safety measures.

The 1st gun is a FÉG ACK .45ACP pistol shooting FMJ.

The 2nd is a russian made MCM (or Margolin) .22LR pistol with high velocity ammo.
(It's cheap and beats the tar out of *any* target pistol under $1500 in terms of accuracy.)

The 3rd is a SW 640 in .38spec.
The ammo was some kind of Fiocchi JHP I think.

More (STI Edge, P7, P228 and so) coming soon...

very nice... was wondering how you timed it.

i got some daytime ones.. i was mostly going for frozen brass in the air...but good side effect. Yours on the other hand friggin RULE!
canon 20D 1/3200 so at 1200fps the bullet travleled 4.5ish inches in the photo.

freeride21a,

Wow, great shot! I never had much luck with flying brass, not to mention catching bullets on "film" in daylight.

Excellent! I like the wheelgun too.
On the daytime pic, I don't think I've ever seen a bullet trace from the side like that.
All are great pics.
:D
Thanks, Griz

The wheelgun pic shows beautifully why it's important to grease the chamber in blockpowder revolvers, that's a nasty chainfire waiting to happen otherwise :)

Black powder photography? I wonder what the min shutter speed on my Nikkormat FTN is (or if it matters, mechanical shutter...)

*does the math anyways* .625 milliseconds... I wonder if the mechanical shutter would ruin me?

mfree,

The shutter speed doesn't matter. All you need is a flash wired to an IR or sound trigger.

Drool.....

Have the 10D...

<rooting through the parts bin for some chewing gum & baling wire to make an audio triggger....>

Very cool pics, That russian made MCM was interesting as well, Had never seen one of those before. Great Job

Nice pictures.

From my 10D
This is all the brass I have been able to catch because the HS/LC guys are really slow shooters :)
