Hello all I am looking for a new scope for my savage model 10 6.5 Creedmoor I mostly shoot targets and steel with it but I want to hunt with it at least once and I came upon this scope

Vortex Optics Viper PST Gen II Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 3-15x 44mm RZR Zero Stop Side Focus First Focal Illuminated EBR-2D MOA Reticle Matte

so I have questions

for starters how does it compare to luepold?

For anyone who has one would you buy it again?

Midway USA has them on sale for $599 is this a good buy?

@Walkalong
@Varminterror
@natureboy

I figure if anyone has seen one it would’ve been one of you guys

How about this for $50 more?

Vortex Optics Viper PST Gen II Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 5-25x 50mm MOA-RZR Zero Stop Side Focus First Focal Illuminated EBR-2D MOA Reticle Matte - $649.99 - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1020648416?

FWIW, I bought Vortex Strike Eagle 4-24x50 with EBR-4 MOA due to 80 MOA adjustment range for T/CR22 which has integral picatinny scope rail so I couldn't use 20/30 MOA scope rail. I think for your application, may be a consideration at nearly the half the price. (It is second focal plane but you are mostly shooting targets/steel)

I like to test scopes at dark shadows for details. At 100 yards in sun, Strike Eagle produces bright and sharp details of small letters on transformer and in dark shadows under 150' trees at 50 yards, brightness and sharpness is comparable to Leupold American Marksman 3-9x40mm and slightly better than Burris FF E1 6.5-20x50mm with zoom set at 9x power.

It's currently $319 with free shipping from Euro Optic - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...329-free-2-day-shipping.903761/#post-12298006

How does it compare to Leupold? Which Leupold? Leupold makes stuff from 300-3000 bucks. Generally speaking, Vortex is very rarely going to be the best bet in any given price category.

Good point I guess I wasn’t as specific as I should have been so let me see if this is better at $600 dollars how does it compare to a $600 dollar luepold scope maybe a VX-3?

Leupold doesn't play in the "tactical/target" category at that price point. Sightron does, and you can get more for less with an S-Tac from site sponsor Doug. While Sightron has a great warranty, that's not one of their selling features as it rightfully is with Vortex. https://cameralandny.com/shop/tags/riflescope/categories/rifle-scopes/5eb0346f-bcd4-4f1f-93df-d6f5a8428b8a?filters=207727:"Sightron"&page=4

Currently it wears a 6.5-20x40 Leupold target scope with a fine crosshair I want something in the middle with less magnification like a 3-15

I went with Vortex Optics Viper PST Gen II Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 5-25x 50mm MOA-RZR as mentioned above on my Savage LRP in 6.5. Very happy with my purchase. I have three of these scopes. No problems with any of them. I have 10 vortex scopes. Crossfires to Strike Eagles to Vipers. Never had to send one back.

Functionally, the Viper PST II is a very different breed of horse than a VX3.

The VX3 and VX3i 4.5-14x50 was my “go to” hunting scope for a while, a decade ago, but I wouldn’t go back to them again. The PST II at the new price point, especially this sale price, is a great option. They were great scopes before their prices came down, but the newer Strike Eagle and Venom models cannibalized a lot of the PST II marketshare, and Vortex rightfully and understandably dropped the PST II’s prices to keep some momentum - making the PST II are even better value now.

I’ve not handled this lower mag version, but have used the 5-25x, and I can’t imagine there’s a gap between the mags. At $600-650 for either, I’m in. There are other options which are right answers, but the PST II is not a wrong answer, and is a better answer than many other options.

Yep, the larger objective and added power are worth it IMHO, and it's a very good scope and value at the sale price.. I have two of them. (Mine are Mil, but other than that)

Or this one for $150 less from a vendor that doesn't engage in price gouging and helps this site exist. Further, you just don't hear people talking about how great Sightron's warranty is. That's because few people will ever find out. https://cameralandny.com/shop/sight...cd2826?variation=3072541&query=sightron S-TAC

That's a good scope, I had both flavors for awhile, my younger son still has one of them, but, IMHO, it's not in the class of the Gen II. If price is a factor though, I'm sure you'll be pleased with it, Sightron does make good stuff.

Thanks for the replies guys it’s definitely on my radar now I’ll have to wait till after Christmas but yeah I’m interested
