Deep South.... really got a laugh over your "Buy-back" theory. SO TRUE!

rimfire 22 are fun; if you can find the ammo. I enjoy revolver and bolt action (and semi).

I'd go rifle 1st of your chosen action. I'm more of a rifle guy... dispite that I've bought more pistols than rifles in recent years and may even have more pistols than rifle now.

Id go semi... because, well, that's what I did. I shot a friend's Browning lever 22 and it was real nice, accurate, and fun.

But for me personally, if I got another 22lr rifle, it would be a Ruger bolt to share 10/22 mags with.

Only accurate guns are interesting. That rules out a LOT of 'em. For me, with me doing the shooting, the accuracy threshold for a handgun is 2" groups at 25 yards, and for a .22 rifle it's under half-inch at 50 yards. If they don't deliver decent accuracy they end up staying in the safe and likely getting sold eventually.

If I didn't have any 22s, my first two choices would be a Browning International Medalist ("shooter grade" is plenty good), and some sort of CZ 452 or 453, the specific model depending upon what I was going to do with it.

Except for BB guns as a kid, I never had a lever action. But if the Good Gun Fairy left one under my pillow, I'd be delighted.

In .357, if you please, Miss Ms. Fairy.

Atta girl !

I had a chance recently to shoot a few bolt action. 22s and I had forgotten how much fun it was. I was "forced" to remedy the oversight in our collection with a Savage Mark II for me and a Ruger American. 22 for Mrs. Fonteneaux. Not on the list, so I didn't vote, but that's where I'm at. Also, I picked up a Ruger Wrangler when I retired. It's fun, but frankly I'd prefer a double action. Ymmv.

Like many I have many, a good start would be the tiny Browning .22 auto rifle. Maybe the most fun to own & shoot of anything I’ve ever tried. Pricey and worth it.

in truth with .22s I like the older guns over any of the contemporary stuff. Current models are all fine, but somehow boring compared to the vintage pieces out there.

Many people dis on the 10/22 takedown. I like mine. Admittedly, it's not quite as accurate as my carbines or my Marlin 60. But there is value to me in a rifle that will fit in a backpack. I also have the Mag Pull furniture on mine, so it snaps together in a nice little bundle and has three spare mags stored inside the stock.

I do not own a .22 of any ilk.
I've had a few rifles in the past but I'm thinking I need a .22 or therapy.
Winchester 94/22. I have three 22 rifles I can drive nails with: a lever, bolt, and 10/22 target. I love hunting and plinking with th lever. You can shoot short ammo and probably CB caps with the lever and bolt guns when quiet and low power situations are warranted, too.

Thanks, guys, for the valuable input. I'll eventually add a number of your suggestions to my collection but I think I'll start with a single action revolver. It checks several boxes on my list, will be convenient to transport, and it's a favorite choice for my wife.
It will have to wait until after back surgery. Just gives me time to whittle down choices... but that's another discussion thread!

spend the money to get a ruger single six. used ones have much life left in them as they are built like a brick outhouse. 5.5” barrel is the best compromise for longer sight picture while remaining handy. 22lr for fun, 22wmr for business. if you find one cheap because it is missing a cylinder, these replacements work well; my 22wmr cylinder is a “single eight.” http://rugercyl.com/ruger-cylinders/

I think something like a Ruger Wrangler or Single Six would be a great way to get started with a .22.

Personally, I think sickos like you should own a target grade bolt action .22lr. Something along the lines of a Sako or Anschutz or Cooper. Or maybe one of each? :D
