I can't find the right nightstand gun!

Nightstand gun?

I like the XD45 Service. It's got a rather long grip for carrying, but it holds 14 rounds. It's not likely to rust, and it has tactile/visible LCI and cocking indicator, so you can double-check the gun if you're not sure what condition you left it in. Grip safety prevents ADs but doesn't require conscious operation. The grip safety adds another feature most people don't know about: it locks the slide at about 1/2" back, so you can check the chamber without ejecting a round or taking the gun out of battery. With the heavy .45+P spring the gun has, this is really a good feature.

While it's a tad bulky for constant carry, if it's going to sit in a drawer a lot, it's perfect.

I like the CZ75. I use a 9mm SP01, 18 rounds in the mag and a light rail for my Insight M3. I feel it's a good choice loaded with 147gr JHP rounds.

The same pistol can be had in .40.

Were I to switch away from the CZ, it would be to an FNP or railed 1911.

glock 30 with glock 21 mag equals 13+1. if he's still coming, you are sorry shot or you picked the wrong burglar!

I'm seriously considering upgrading my nightstand gun to one of these, as I've found I just can't love the plastic gun that's currently doing that job, and I'd like a better trigger and more similarity to my carry gun:

They sell 14+1 .45, 22+1 .40 or 26+1 9mm mags for it if high capacity is your thing.

ETA: STI has another kind of neat offering, a 6" full-railed 10mm, and you can get 22 round mags for it.

For me, a night stand gun should have a light on it.
If I could have any gun on my night stand it'd be this:

Sans the red dot though.

Springfield XDm

Grip problem solved.
Capacity problem [strike]solved[/strike] annihilated.

Problem solved.

I'm looking to get an XDm 9 one day, but not for the nightstand.
My current nightstand pistol is the XD45, full friggin' size.

next we'll talk about motorcycle oil

What's better for my motorcycle, full synthetic or dino?

I keep a S&W .357 Mag loaded with 125 grain JHP and a 500 lumen Surefire M6 Guardian light on the nightstand about 6 inches from me...

Also next to the bed is a Mossberg 500 loaded with 8 rounds of 00 buck.

If things start getting real icky, the Saiga-12 with 20 round drum and the AR-15 aren't too far away.... I think I may have watched a bit too many 80's action movies while growing up....

my nightstand gun is a

XD45c, 13 rounds 230 grain JHP, Tru Glo TFOs, and insight light (I believe XT1 but too lazy tonight to get up and look) with Stobe, momentary on, constant on modes.

Bed side

How about an HK USP 40 S&W with a Pillow Holster from www.pillowholster.com. It can be flipped for either left or right handed. It's padded so it's not easily felt.

I would suggest a S&W 4006, 4003, 4046, 4043, 410 or 411. They are in the 40 S&W caliber, double stack good ergonomics, at least for me. The all stainless frame and slide of the 4006 and 4046 help soak up recoil, and best of all Crimson Trace Grips are available for them.

Somebody needs to get rid of that picture

I like a pistol / auto loader for my nightstand gun, revolvers are tooo darn loud for in the house. I dont want to hurt my family while trying to protect them.

double barrel shotty,

As you see, anything thing can fulfill this duty, question is how large is your night stand?
Really just find a decent gun that is reliable and you can shoot well.

That is in the end what you need, all the brands and other advice, nice, but you need to go to the store, and go to the range and spend the time to find what you are comfortable with.

I love my p30. It's expensive though. So far I have around a 1000 rounds through it with zero stoppages of any kind. They are making a version in .40 now as well.

you don't need a huge capacity for a nightstand gun. most home invasion incidences where the homeowner is armed end with only about two shots being fired (from the homeowner) in total at most in most circumstances. I keep a CZ 75B and next to it is a 1911. 8 capacity on the 1911, 16 on the CZ.

EAA Witness P 10mm with a M6 laser/light, 16 rounds of ammo. I have one in the house and one in my truck. My expensive guns are in the safe.

My nightstand gun is a Glock 17/21 with a TLR-1 light.

So no Glocks , 1911s, mouse guns, or revolvers. From the way you pair up "40 vs 45" I take it that 9mm is out too.
You want a high capacity pistol in 45acp or 40cal with a comfortable 110 degree grip angle , that is concealable, comfortable, and accurate.
There are a lot of options out there: Sig 229 40cal, Browning Hi Power in 40cal, SA XD , XDm, and XDm 3.8 in 40cal, CZs, etc.

My kimber pro cdp stays in my nightstand beside a good flashlight, then travels with me day to day for ccw. Sometimes I keep a para p12 in my nightstand. There's a glock gen4 17 with a tlr1 in the safe that will reside in the nightstand once I become familiar enough and proficient enough that I'll trust my family's life to it. The flashlight will stay, though. The weapon light is great and all, but I feel that when investigating those bumps in the night it is best not to go pointing my boomstick around blindly. Handgun low and ready, light in the weak hand to identify what it is.

I say this because I once flashed the muzzle of a beretta 96 with a light to a group of 14-16 year olds sneaking over their dad's fence to smoke weed, which put them in my ex girlfriend's backyard. The kids were harmless, my negligence and pigheadedness was the more irresponsible action. :banghead:They never snuck over the fence again, though. Myself in my boxers and beretta and my ex's 90lb boxer were obviously a buzzkill.
