I was at an indoor range today to ring out my XDs that came back from Springfield.

I thought it would be fun to T&E a few other pistols and a new Winchester 30-30 Trapper that I just got.

So I took a total of 5 handguns to the range,calibers ranging from .22 mag / 9 MM / .40 S&W / .45 ACP .

I was shooting well and decided to give the XDs a rest, started shooting the G-23 & 27.

Then I went back to the XDs and had a blown out case, and then another one.

YES,it was the dummy with the FORTY IN THE FORTY FIVE error.

I put 2 rounds of .40 S&W into the XDs and they fired and the case was blown out [ not cracked ].

I had one of "THOSE" moments.

I will NEVER put different ammunition on the bench again.

It's always been a rule for me to only take out one gun and its ammo at a time at the range. When I'm done with that one I put everything away and then start with another gun.

That sounds like a wonderful range outing.

the FORTY IN THE FORTY FIVE error.
Whoops.

I like to use the blue plastic boxes from Midway to take ammo to the range, as well as plastic ammo boxes. It has the caliber on the lid and makes it easier to grab the right ammo. I also use some Bagmaster bullet bags. Have to be more careful with them. My son did the same thing not long ago, but it was 9mm in a .40. He stopped, looked at me, and said, that sounded wrong? Duh......

I fired a round of .41 Mag in a .44 Mag a few weeks ago. Same dumb look on my face. Wrong gun, not wrong ammo. Thought I brought the .41. Dang old eyes.

:)

I did the same thing once putting 9mm into a .40 pistol. It didn't hurt anything but it did make me take notice that I should be more aware from now on.

I did that once with a 10mm in a .45 ACP 1911. Curiously, upon pulling the trigger the entire round (including case) came fell out of the end barrel and the primer was not marked.

I tried to shoot .410 out of a .20 ga, and spent a couple min trying to jam a .22 mag into my .22 lr Single-six. :)

When I bring two different cartridge guns to the range, they are so different there is no way to mix and match - 22 and 9mm, 38 spl and 45 ACP or similar pairs - just makes more sense to me anyway

Though I've never dropped hammer on the wrong caliber, I have caught myself holding a .380 round in one hand and a 9mm Luger magazine in the other.

I've always put two types of ammo on the bench. Either 22lr and 40S&W at the pistol range or 22lr and some .30 rifle at the rifle range. Never thought about mixing them up because those always seems to be the only combos that ends up together.

Haven't done it yet, but with three different 30.06 family rifles in house, (30.06, .270 & 25.06) it could be only a matter of time & carelessness. Especially since a lot of my 25.06 brass is actually resized 30.06 wearing original headstamps.

Colored sharpies on the headstamps differentiating them would help

I've started loading 300 blackout and I put them in old 223 boxes, because they fit, and write 300blk on them in big letters. I was in a hurry one morning during deer season and grabbed what I thought was a box of 300 blackout from my bench and went out to the hunting shack. I got out there and started loading up a mag and quickly realized it was 223. Then I quite embarrassingly had to ask my uncle if I could borrow his shotgun for the day.

I hate to admit it but....

I have done all of the above and more. I shot 380 in 9mm, and yes Mary, it will work if the extractor holds it in place. I have shot 357 Sig in my 40. 44 Mag in my 45colt rifle. Tried to shoot 45 colt in my 44 mag rifle. Shot 38-40 out of my 45 Colt, identical rifles. Tried loading 38-55 in in my identical looking 44 mag marlin Cowboy. I am not even sure that is all of them.

Good heavens!!

Never once in 50+ years, is all I can say!!

Was there a cell-phone involved??

That's the only excuse I can think of.

And that is not a decent excuse while shooting anything!

I was well on the way until I put that .41 Mag into what I thought was my .41 Redhawk. I have an identical .44 Redhawk. Oh well, I'll never make 50 starting over. :)

Well darn!!

I guess I'll just keep on keeping the .380's & 9mm's, and 40's and .45's for different range days!!

It's bad enough having to sort out the brass when I get home.

That's probably why I have never done it.

There was a thread some time ago about someone firing some 8x57 in a 1917 (or was it a P14?). It left an "8mm Mauser" stamp on the bolt face from the pressure. Yikes!
