I expect prices on 223/5.56 to start to come down fairly fast.

For everybody that is telling people to reload well have good luck at finding components. I've been reloading for about 40 years and I've never seen it like it is now. Before I've always been able to find components maybe not exactly what I wanted but for target or plinking what I found would work and it's not just components but reloading equipment, too. My son has been eying to find a reloading press a reasonable price but no luck. It's not a real big issue because he can use mine but he wants his own so he doesn't have to come to use mine.

Thinking it's going away any time soon is just wishful thinking.
Eh. Count me among the wishful thinkers. Those of you who've been paying a buck a round for 62-grain green-tip 5.56 might feel pretty silly in three or four months. Actually, if you've felt compelled to pay that price at any time recently, you should already feel pretty silly, because it means you got caught totally unprepared for anything.

.... My local shop charges

$45 for 20 rounds of American Eagle .223
$200 for 525 rounds of bulk Federal .22
and $60 for Federal Gold Medal Match .308 (Usually goes for $20)

..... Yeah, I'll avoid buying local

Get out of the shark pit. Wow, that's nuts. Sorry man, I thought it was just online gouging... Um.. er...capitalism. Both of my LGS have been fair.

Prices are driven by markets. SImply put, half of what makes up a market is the buyer, and it seems we have many buyers with more cash than good sense. The other half--the selling half--is going to leverage that lack of good sense for as long as it can.

Just like factory ammo, you don't wait until the supply dries up before you try to buy. You don't wait until the components dry up to decide to start reloading.
You plan ahead and buy when the price is down and the supply plentiful.

When it looked like the American people were actually going to be stupid enough to vote for obama (the first time), a friend and I were at a gun show table looking at bullets. We were trying to decide whether to buy a LOT of bullets, or a WHOLE LOT of bullets.

My friend said, "If you don't like the price now, you are going to really hate the price next year"

We stretched the household budgets and bought everything the seller had in our calibers.
And we are glad we did. The "regular" price on this stuff has increased 3-4 times what we paid for it. The inflated price, if you can find it, is out of sight.

Everything but bullets is available for decent prices if you're looking hard enough and willing to wait a few weeks. Bullets are the sore spot right now.

Just sayin'

I got factory new NATO spec M855 for $0.55/round, shipped, recently. Then I got more for $0.62 per round, shipped. Right now I have an order pending (should ship this week) for factory NATO M193 that is $0.46 per round shipped.

Not good, but decent.

Nice stock M2 carbine.

My LGS is about $8-$9 per box of 20 .223 right now it just doesn't last long when it comes in. I saw some for $12/box (different distributor) and passed it up. I'll wait. And if I'm wrong and it doesn't come back down in the next 6 months then I'll pony up a little then.

It will probably go down over time, and it will probably be less expensive and more available in 6 months.

As long as something else doesn't happen that just blows the whole thing wide open.

According to my buddy who returned from the SHOT show in Vegas where he was doing his yearly buying for his family's sporting good store....It will be back within the next 2-3 months, at the same or cheaper prices
I just talked to a guy selling ammo on GB at insane prices...according to him it will be "at least a year" until manufacturers "even start to ship".
believe who you will.

I choose to believe neither.

But if stock returns at the same prices, or lower, in 2-3 months, I'll be tickled pink.

Its not going to be a sudden thing. I don't see things getting much better until the votes in congress happen. Then we might see a slight easing. We will start to see prices go down as stock starts to actually stay on the shelves. Then we will see a cycle of stock building/price drop/stock disappearing. It will keep happening until the price hits its new normal.

Yeah, thankfully I don't have to buy ammo there. A sponsor keeps me shooting .223 and 9mm and not having to worry about being gouged.
