It’s ironic that the thread for the really nice S&W Model 63 popped up last week, I had a blued twin sitting in our CA regulatory penalty box for a while. The original post and pictures, along with the stories and great pictures by everyone in subsequent posts, made the wait feel 30 days rather than 10.

I’ve posted a few times about getting outbid all year for S&W Model 63 .22 LR revolvers. It all started with me being close to the final selling price early in the year, then by the end of 2020 I wasn’t within 200 bucks of the high bidders. I finally realized the stainless model wasn’t coming home with me to roost, so I started looking for Model 34’s.

I finally found a 34-1 in great shape listed by a seller I trust, so I bid a bit high and won it.

There is a hint of muzzle wear on one side, a turn ring on the cylinder and a little bit of bluing wear where the crane pivots within the frame. There is no bluing wear on the ejector rod, grip frame or cylinder mouths. I seriously doubt this gun was carried in a holster much or fired many rounds through it at all, it was probably a safe queen for most of its years.

The grips are the square butt factory checkered walnut “service” type panels that I usually despise, but the small J frame and absence of recoil with the .22,LR is making me want to keep them in place.

I gave it a whirl at the indoor range today, firing one set each (No “best of” and tossing out the others.) I was shooting 24 CCI mini mags at 10 yds, two-handed DA.

I will say the dark ramp/black blade sights aren’t all that easy to see in indoor light. I wish it had a red ramp insert or something similar. Hopefully when I get a chance to wring it out in natural light they’ll be easier to see. I gave it the best I could, but the group I shot with the 34-1 was actually a bit larger than the one I shot with my S&W 317 3” with the modern so-so trigger and hi-viz front and V blade rear. I can honestly say I was a bit disappointed, but it was with my shooting rather than with the guns themselves.

Despite my shortcomings behind the trigger, I can see why everyone was raving about their Model 63’s! The handy Smith Kit Gun size, the fit and the finish are first rate. Once I get used the the sights and feel of the new 34, I hope I’ll be able to put together some grouping worthy of the gun.

Stay safe.

That's a beauty, Riomouse! Congrats!

There are a few of those classic S&W kit guns for sale locally that draw my attention.

One thing is for sure, I'd probably have to add a bit of white paint on the front sight to help my eyes. I sure would be shy of doing that to a gun in such good condition,. But knowing me I'd break down an do it when know one else was looking.

Enjoy your Model 34. They are nice 22LR guns.

I have a M317 and a M63. I like the light weight of the M317 for carrying around the barn and dispatching critters at short range. The light weight of the M317 is outstanding.

The M63 is just a nice revolver.

Congrats on a most excellent acquisition! Looks to be in great shape too! I "found" this one in a local gun shop some years back, like new in the box. I say "found" because an old buddy of mine from high school worked there and knew of my fondness for vintage guns, particularly S&W revolvers, and set it aside for me. The price was very reasonable so I bought it for my girlfriend (who later became my wife), and gave it to her for her first gun. She did well with it but didn't care for the small, round butt grip so I got her a Hogue MonoGrip for it and it's been smooth shooting ever since!

Very nice acquisition, Riomouse.
Years ago a friend had that same model. A sweet shooter indeed. He sold it at a gun show. I was a bit perturbed at him for not telling me he wanted to sell it.

I have a 63. Once I got the sights on it that I like I am pretty pleased with it. I do think it deserves some nice wood grips. I am not completely happy with the Hogue Monogrip.

You can use some of that small bottle enamel kit paint for the front sight, or like I used to do at work, just rub a china marker in the color of your choice over it a few times for an easily removable option.

My first handgun that I owned was a cheapo well used German made pot metal 8 shot 22lr 3inch barrel ,,, my Dad bought me when I was 13 ...I literally finished wearing it out ... beyond handy !!!

Congratulations on your bucket list gun !!!

Those model 34s are very good 22s. I have one I bought many years ago from a pawn shop for $250 OTD. Mine is an old flat latch and it shoots like a laser. The charge holes are tight too. CCI 22s will slide in easy enough but Remington golden bullets need a shove to seat all the way. I consider it one of my best gun deals.

Now you need to see if you can find a matching J-Frame in 32 long. It will most likely be a fixed sight gun but stay around 90-100gr bullets and they shoot to the sights. And I can reload 32 Long as cheap as 22 (cheaper right now) since I cast my own bullets. I have 2", 3" and 4" 32 Longs and love shooting them.

I found an older version, built on the I-Frame, that's finish was in relatively poor condition. Asking price was $950. I passed, but someone picked it up a couple of weeks later. Yours looks great!

nice gun. if you ever find an original Charter Arms 3" Pathfinder .22lr you will have a real gem.

I ran into a decent little revolver at a gun show a couple years ago that was tagged as a pre-model 34 and was able to make a deal for it. When I got it home I kept thinking the barrel didn't look right and when measured I found it to be 3.5 inches. Turns out it is the air weight version, a pre-43

What a great find!

When I first looked at it I thought the same thing too: wait a minute, that's no 4" barrel! Actually with a 3 1/2" barrel I think it looks more proportionate to the rest of the gun than with the 4" barrel.

A pistolsmith ought to be able to put a sight insert into the front sight in a color of your choice. S&W offers or used to offer a white outline rear sight blade that could be fitted.
